In the second week of September ten years ago, I flew to the UK from Chicago to pursue postgraduate (研究生) studies at the University of Manchester. My understanding and appreciation of the United Kingdom before then had been through my reading of British history,

and culture.

My stay in Manchester during that year provided me with the opportunity to experience at first

hand life in the UK as well as meeting and communicating with other students from all over the world. I lived off Hyde Road in a flat with a Bolivian and a Kenyan, both of whom have remained

my close friends nine years since the completion of my studies.

The teaching in the UK was second to none and student life was really rewarding (值得的). The professors were always friendly, supportive and encouraging, but extremely strict when it came

to course tasks. I learnt important lessons from this.

At the University of Manchester, the resources were quite rich. John Rylands Library of Manchester University is one of the largest libraries in the United Kingdom. Most of my free time,

I was immersed (沉浸) in a sea of books. I had read a large selection of works written by great playwrights like William Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde, novelists like Charles Dickens, and poets like William Wordsworth, Keats, Yeats and Rudyard Kipling.

I found the British cultural life rich, modem, and historic. That year, I was able to visit parts of the UK, including Blackpool, Leeds, Liverpool, Bolton, and on some occasions, London.

After this precious year, I feel proud and honored to pursue further study in one of the best

destinations on this planet.

Working from home gets a bad rap Google the phrase — you’ll see a cheat or

low-level jobs.

But Stanford Graduate School of Business professor Nicholas Bloom says requiring employees to

be in the office is an outdated work tradition, set up during the Industrial Revolution. It ignores

today’s fine communications methods and long commutes (通勤), and actually hurts firms and

employees.

“Working from home is a future-looking technology,” Bloom told an audience during

TEDxStanford, “and I think it has enormous potential.”

To test his claim, Bloom, with co-researcher James Liang, did research on China’s largest travel agency, Ctrip. They invited volunteers to a study in which half worked from home for nine months,

coming into the office one day a week, and half worked only from the office.

Bloom tracked these two groups for about two years. The results? “We found a 13% improvement in performance from people working at home,” Bloom says.

Two reasons led to that uptick: First, people working from home actually work all the time. As to

people working from the office, they might be delayed by traffic or take a long-time lunch with a

colleague. They are less likely to be on the clock for the full workday. Second, Bloom says, people

at home are able to concentrate better. “The office is actually an amazingly noisy environment.

‘There’s a cake in the break room; Bob’s leaving, so come and join us for dinner.’ Wha the office is super-distracting

Also, his study found that employees’ quitting jobs at the company dropped by 50% when

employees were allowed to work from home.

Bloom hopes this example helps kill the negative opinions on working from home. For employees,

they’re much more productive and happier. For managers, you don’t have to spend so much time hiring and training people. For firms, you make far more profit. For society, there’s a hu of reducing traffic jams, driving times and, finally, pollution.

22. According to Nicholas Bloom, people working from the office usually ____________.

A. get unsatisfactory salaries.

B. have rich working resources

C. waste a lot of time in commuting

D. develop strong communication skills

23. What does the underlined word “uptick” in Paragraph 6 mean?

A. Increase.

B. Popularization.

C. Recovery.

D. Reduction.

24. What’s an advantage of working from home according to the last paragraph?

A. It builds up managers’ experience in training employees.

B. It can strengthen the ties of the whole company.

C. It makes employees’ family life much happier.

D. It can reduce traffic jams and pollution.

25. What can be the best title for this text?

A. Working from home gets a bad rap.

B. How to improve work efficiency at the office?

C. How to make the best use of commuting time?

D. Working from home is a future-looking technology.

Singapore produces about 10% of its food. But as climate change and population growth threaten

food supplies, it wants to raise that to 30% by the year 2030, under a plan known as “30

However, it is not easy. The problem is space. Singapore is a small country, with only 724 square

kilometers of land. Only one percent of that land area is used for agriculture. As a result, food

production costs are higher there than in the rest of Southeast Asia.

So what to do to increase its own food production? The pressure is on new farmers to answer the

government’s call to “grow more with less”. “Whenever I talk about food security in Singapore, I

tell folks not to think land but to think space. Because you can go upwards and sideways,”Paul Teng. He is an agriculture professor at Nanyang Technological University. There are now

more than 30 vertical farms (垂直农场) in Singapore that grow up, not across, the land. The

number of so-called “sky firms” has doubled over the past three years. Sustenir Agriculture is one

of these businesses. Its farm grows non-native foods like cherry tomatoes and strawberries inside

buildings under artificial lighting. Then it sells the produce to local supermarkets and online

stores.

Singapore’s government plans to build an 18

-hectare (公顷) agriculture area for indoor plant

factories and insect farms by the middle of 2021. Some people get protein by eating insects. That

way, the island nation will not have to depend as much on imports to feed its 5.6 million people.

The plan was first announced in March.

However, not everyone thinks the new technology is perfect. Egg farmer William Ho says the

government should not depend so much on agriculture technology businesses. “Many of them

that the high cost of the technology makes their products too expensive for many people.

But he became inspired when he tho ught about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly dise ase of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousand s of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted t o face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never b e controlled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera ki lled people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangerous gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the disease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person die d. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed eviden ce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his enqu iry. As the disease spread quickly through poor neighbourhoods, he began to gat her information. In two particular streets, the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why. First he marked on a map the exact places where all the dead people had liv ed. This gave him a valuable clue about the cause of the disease. Many of the d eaths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 a nd 40). He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he made further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 Cambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water from the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. He found that it came from the river polluted by the dirty water from London. H e immediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle f rom the pump so that it could not be used. Soon afterwards the disease slowed d own. He had shown that cholera was spread by germs and not in a cloud of gas. In another part of London, he found supporting evidence from two other deat hs that were linked to the Broad Street outbreak. A woman, who had moved away f rom Broad Street, liked the water from the pump so much that she had it deliver ed to her house every day. Both she and her daughter died of cholera after drin king the water. With this extra evidence John Snow was able to announce with ce rtainty that polluted water carried the virus.

There is no doubt that ...(毫无疑问)结构。 的用法,易考点为该短语位于句首作状语和作后置定语两点,考生应能掌握be absorbed by(为某事物所吸引);还应联系be engaged in, be devoted to, be involved in和be lost in等常见重点近义短语。 4. apart from apart from是常见介词短语,意为“除……之外”,考生应熟练掌握近义的词和短语:except, besides, in addition (to), other than, except for, except that, except when等。 be available to意为“可利用的”,be available for意为“使……可以享受某物;使……买得起某物”, 要了解二者的区别。 预测2010年高考命题会以考查词义或者形容词短语作后置定语为命题方向。 6. consist of consist of是近几年高考高频考查短语。 如be made up of, be composed of, constitute, be formed of 等。 break down,break up, break off, break away, break in等,都要求考生熟知它们的常见义项,因为 命题时可能会对该短语直接考查,也可在短文中考查对其意义的理解。 _____ vt.&vi. _____ vt.& n. 治愈;痊愈→______adj. _____ vt. 吸收;吸引;使专心→______adj. _____ adj. 严重的;严厉的;剧烈的 characteristic 2. conclude;conclusion 3. defeat 4. attend;attendance 5. expose;exposure 6. cure;curable 7. control 8. absorb;absorbed 9. severe 10. _____ vt. 宣布;通告→______n. _____ vt.&vi. 捐献;贡献;捐助→______n.
