2、As more and more people speak the global languages of English, Chinese, Spanish, and Arabic, other languages are rapidly disappearing. In fact, half of the 6,000-7,000 languages spoken around the world today will likely die out by the next century, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

In an effort to prevent language loss, scholars from a number of organizations-- UNESCO and National Geographic among them –have for many years been documenting dying languages and the cultures they reflect.

Mark Turin, a scientist at the Macmillan Center, Yale University, who specializes in the languages and oral traditions of the Himalayas, is following in that tradition. His recently published book, A Grammar of Thangmi with an Ethnolinguistic Introduction to the Speakers and Their Culture, grows out of his experience living, working and raising a family in a village in Nepal.

Documenting the Tangmi language and culture is just a starting point for Turin, who seeks to include other languages and oral traditions across the Himalayans reaches of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. But he is not content to simply record these voices before they disappear without record.

At the University of Cambridge Turin discovered a wealth of important materials-- including photographs, films, tap recordings, and field notes---- which had remained unstudied and were badly in need of care and protection.

Now, through the two organizations that he has founded---the Digital Himalaya Project and the World Oral Literature Project---Turin has started a campaign to make such documents, found in libraries and stores around the world, available not just to scholars but to the younger generations of communities from whom the materials were originally collected. Thanks to digital technology and the widely available Internet. Turin notes, the endangered languages can be saved and reconnected with speech communities.

3、Youth football team members rescued more than two weeks after sudden flooding trapped them in a cave in Thailand are now being well looked after at a hospital in the northern city of Chiang Rai. In addition to treating the boys for potential body fluid loss, inadequate nutrition and lack of oxygen, their doctors also plan to closely monitor them for symptoms of diseases that may have been infected by animals living in the cave.

“The next step is to make sure those kids and their families are safe, because living in a cave provides a different environment, which might contain animals that could transmit…disease,” said the local hospital. The boys and their family members have been told to watch for symptoms such as headache, nausea(反胃), muscle pain or difficulty breathing, the reports added.

Yet based on the location where the boys were trapped—more than four kilometers from the cave complex’s main entrance, past some fully submerged passages—and the fact they have been swimming out wearing full scuba face masks, it seems unlikely that they were living with bats in the cave or breathed in

bat-associated bacteria during their rescue, several infectious disease experts said. “It’s hard to imagine bats got that deep into the cave because of all those narrow passageways, but it is possible,” says Ian Lipkin, an animal expert and professor at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. “It’s unlikely that there would be many animals in there,” notes Jonathan Epstein, a doctor at EcoHealth Alliance, a nonprofit organization that studies diseases and how to prevent them.

Bats typically like to rest in areas they can easily enter and exit, not in places that fully flood, he adds.Bats in Thailand have been linked with a wide range of viruses that are similar to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)—Lipkin says. But it seems more likely the boys would have been exposed to

infection-causing bacteria when they swam through the dirty water with cuts and scrapes. “If you are trying to prioritize issues with respect to health care for these kids, number one would be psychological damage and second will be bacterial infections from the cuts and scrapes they may have encountered.” Lipkin says.

1.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the potential symptom of the rescued team members?

https://www.360docs.net/doc/375694701.html,cking body water

B.Unbalanced nutrition

C.Pain in the head and muscles

D.Adequate oxygen

2.The underlined word “submerged” in paragraph 3 means ____________.

A.under the water

B.wild and dangerous

C.with animals

D.bat-associated

3.Which is true about the caves and the trapped people?

A.Jonathan Epstein thought it possible for the team members to be attacked by bats in the fully-flooded cave.

B.Lipkin argued bats were not able to get deep into the narrow cave where the kids were trapped.

C.Lipkin said the victims might be infected when their body were exposed to bacterial water during the rescue.

D.Lipkin believed the most important issue for the cave-trapped teenagers was infectious bacteria examination.

4.What is the text type of the passage?

A.An academic essay about bats.

B.A newspaper article.

C.A medical magazine.

D.A Thai website about sports.

4、Ever walked to the shops only to find, once there, you’ve completely forgotten what you went for? Or struggled to remember the name of an old friend? For years we’ve accepted that a forgetful brain is as much a part of aging as wrinkles and gray hair. But now a new book suggests that we’ve got it all wrong.

According to The Secret Life of the Grown-up Brain, by science writer Barbara Strauch, when it comes to the important things, our brains actually get better with age. In fact, she argues that some studies have found that our brain hits its peak between our 40s and 60s — much later than previously thought.

Furthermore, rather than losing many brain cells as we age, we keep them, and even produce new ones well into middle age. For years it’s b een assumed that brain, much like the body, declines with age. But the longest, largest study into what happens to people as they age suggests otherwise.

This continuing research has followed 6,000 people since 1956, testing them every seven years. It has found that on average, participants performed better on cognitive (认知的) tests in their 40s and 50s than they had done in their 20s. Specifically, older people did better on tests of vocabulary, verbal memory (how many words you can remember) and problem solving. Where they performed less well was number ability and perceptual speed — how fast you can push a button when ordered. However, with more complex tasks such as problem-solving and language, we are at our best at middle age and beyond. In short, researchers are now coming up with scientific proof that we do get wiser with age.

Neuroscientists are also finding that we are happier with aging. A recent US study found older people were much better at controlling and balancing their emotions. It is thought that when we’re younger we need to focus more on the negative aspects of life in order to learn about the possible dangers in the world, but as we get older we’ve learned our lessons and are aware that we have less time left in life: therefore, it becomes more important for us to be happy.

1.Barbara Strauch probably agrees that ______.

A.the young are better at handling important things

B.people’s brains work best between their 40s and 60s

C.aging leads to the decline of the function of the brain

D.wrinkles and gray hair are the only symbols of aging

2.The continuing research has found older people perform better on ______.

A.perceptual speed

B.number ability

C.vocabulary tests

D.body balance

3.People are happier with aging because ______.

A.they learn to value the time left

B.they know how to share feelings

C.they cannot focus on negative aspects

D.they do not realize the possible dangers

4.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.People get happier with age.

B.People get wiser with age.

C.People get more forgetful with age.

D.People get more self-aware with age.

Dear Jack,

How are you getting along these days? I hope everything is all right.

Recently, students in our school carried out a survey names To Whom Do You Go When in Trouble. The results are as follows.

61% the students surveyed turn to their friends or schoolmates for help when they are in the trouble. About one fourth of us choose teachers and parents as their ideal listener just because they have many experiences. Therefore, there are still 14% whom prefer to keep the troubles to themselves.

As long as I am concerned, I will choose to talk to my good friends. We can chatting a lot online or face to face, which really worked. What’s your opinion about this topic?

Best wishes!

Yours sincerely,

Mike

从第一句“The Little Penguin has called Phillip Island home for untold generations”这些小企鹅在未知的年代就叫菲利普岛企鹅了,可知年代非常久远。

答案:1.A; 2.A; 3.D; 4.C

In an effort to prevent language loss,scholars...documenting dying languages.

根据第三段最后一句话中的“...grows out of his experience living, working, and raising a

family in a village in Nepal.”

根据最后一段的“from whom the materials were originally collected”和“the endangered languages can be saved and reconne cted with speech communities”可知答案为C项.

答案:1.D; 2.A; 3.C; 4.B

答案:1.B; 2.C; 3.A; 4.B

本题为细节题,根据题干的Barbara Strauch定位在文章第二段第二行,when it comes to the important things, our brains actually get better with age. In fact, she argues that some studies have found that our brain hits its peak between our 40s and 60s.

第二行从It has found开始介绍这个research的结论,倒数第二行的Specifically, order people did better on tests of vocabulary说特别是,年长的人在词汇测试上做的更好,所以选C。

向前找关键信息会看到一个but,文中是这么说的but as we get older we’ve learned our lessons and are sub-consciously aware that we have less time left in life: therefore, it becomes more important for us to be happy.

But now a new book suggests that we’ve got it all wrong.

答案:while; were; what; scheduled; to make; the; was rejected; as; appointment(s); Better

解析:

固定搭配try to do sth(试图干某事),所以这里填to make。

固定短语on the spot(在现场)。

故用was rejected。

所以这里填appointment(s)。

There were many unforgettable things during my senior high school life, one of which was that I was chosen to take part in the marathon.

At first, I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to complete the whole race. Encouraged by my classmates and teachers,I became a little more confident than before. In the first few circles of the race, I did quite well, but for the last one thousand meters I became exhausted. Seeing this situation, my classmates all cheered me on and I finally completed the race although I was the last one to reach the finishing line.

Don't be afraid of failure. What matters is not the result but the process.

Secret codes (密码)keep messages private。Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doing business, especially when information is sent by computer. People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 36 Code breaking never lags(落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography. There are three main types of cryptography. 37 For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” Spell out the hidden message “Meet me.” 38 You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitut e a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 5 20 13 5.” A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 39 For example, “bridge” might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me.” The message “Bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.”40 However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently. A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book. B. In any language, some letters are used more than others. C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message. D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out. F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words. G. Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet. A Heroic Driver Larry works with Transport Drivers, Inc.
