A V ALIDITY STUDY ON LISTENING COMPREHENSION IN

COLLEGE ENGLISH ACHIEVEMENT TEST:

TAKING TYUT AS AN EXAMPLE

ABSTRACT

With the increasing demand of college students’listening ability,the National College English Testing Committee made adjustments to the listening comprehension in June2016to improve the validity of the listening tests.Based on the framework of test task characteristics put forward by Bachman&Palmer,and according to the requirements of College English Syllabus and Test Syllabus,this paper conducted a validity study on the listening comprehension of a college English achievement test from the perspective of content validity and concurrent validity.

First,according to the practical needs,the author revised the framework of test task characteristics for the listening comprehension of a college English achievement test,and then used it to make an analysis of the task characteristics of the listening comprehension of a college English achievement test in July2017.The analysis data were compared with the CET-4Syllabus and Test Syllabus to verify the consistency between the contents of the test paper and the syllabus.

In order to make the results more objective,the listening scores of the college English achievement test in July2017and CET-4’s listening scores in June2017were also analyzed by SPSS software from the concurrent validity perspective,and the correlation coefficient between this listening test score and the criterion score(i.e.the CET-4listening score)was obtained(r=0.549).The results show that the listening test of this university is consistent with the Syllabus in terms of speech speed,genre,topic coverage,length and difficulty,and listening skills are basically covered.The correlation analysis indicates that the listening

comprehension of this test paper has practical relevance to that of the CET-4,so it is valid. The purpose of this study is to provide some references for scholars engaged in validity research and teaching management departments,and also for the quality control of college English teaching.

大学英语期末考试听力测试的效度研究

——以太原理工大学为例

摘要

2016年6月,为了适应新形势下社会对大学生听力能力需求的变化,全国大学英语四六级考试委员会对听力试题进行了调整,以提高听力测试的效度。基于Bachman和Palmer的任务特征分析框架,根据大学英语教学大纲及考试大纲的要求,本论文对某高校大学英语期末考试的听力测试部分进行了内容效度和共时效度的研究。

首先,根据实际需要设计了针对大学英语期末考试听力测试的任务特征框架,然后对某高校2017年7月大学英语四级期末考试听力测试部分进行任务特征分析,将分析数据与大学英语四级教学大纲及考试大纲进行比对,以验证此次听力测试的考查内容与大纲的吻合度。

为了使研究结果更加客观,本研究使用SPSS分析软件对此次期末听力成绩及2017年6月的CET-4的听力成绩进行了共时效度分析,得出此次听力分数和效标分数(即CET-4听力分数)间的相关系数(r=0.549)。研究表明,该校的期末听力测试在语速、体裁、话题覆盖度、篇幅、难易程度等方面与大纲要求相符,听力技能基本覆盖。总之,此次听力测试与大学英语四级考试呈切实相关,说明试卷设计合理有效。本研究旨在对从事效度研究的学者和教学管理部门有一定的借鉴意义,对大学英语教学质量监控有一定的参考价值。
