A

One of my best friends flew down from Alaska to celebrate her 40th birthday with me. We explored the countryside with no real agenda or constraint. The grand finale(压轴戏) was a beautiful outdoor dinner filled with memorable conversation and

laughter. We headed out on the one-and-a-half-hour mountain pass drive in the pitch dark, still engaged in deep conversation.

About 45 miles from home, I noticed the low fuel light was on, and I looked on my car's computer to see that we had one mile until we were out of fuel. Oh, no! How could I have forgotten to check before heading out of the town? I didn't want to alarm my friend, and didn't interrupt her story. I started praying and told myself to keep calm.

Running out of fuel on this route would have been truly catastrophic at 10:30 p.m. It is incredibly dark and rugged(崎岖的), and there's not a lot of traffic. There are no towns, few people, and definitely no petrol stations. My mind raced as I considered the tragic possibilities.

I finally calmly told my friend about our situation. She started strategizing about what we would do and how we could call my husband, Steve, but I didn't want him to have to get our three children out of bed. There was the tow truck option, but we would have to be on the side of the road in the middle of the wilderness for at least 45 minutes! All of the options were truly terrible.

She was nervous, and all I could do was constantly tell her I was certain we would make it. Sure enough, we did. We literally made it over 40 miles with no fuel, and I know that my car's fuel measurement system is pretty accurate. Now, there is the logical part of my brain, trying to make excuses for the situation and the car and every other possible option. But inside, I heard the truth: we experienced a miracle. 101. I looked at my beautiful Christmas tree and sighed. It was time. The New Year was

a week old and my tree still stood in the corner of our room with its collection of memories proudly displayed in a shower of colorful lights. I'd procrastinated long enough.

I got up, went to the garage and dragged all the boxes into the room. I prepared the boxes and carefully placed the decorations of the tree in their protective packaging, pausing every few minutes to admire a favorite. "Hey, little Santa!" I held the Santa from my childhood, "Thanks for being my friend for almost fifty years." He was a little ragged but still gives me a flood of wonderful memories. "Until next year, my dear friend."

There was a collection of handmade ones. My children made in the their first years of school, more than twenty years ago. Made by tiny hands, they are far from perfect in design, but every year they go on my memory tree—memories of young

giggles on Christmas morning and a smiling face when they handed them to me when I came home from work. "Look what we made, Daddy!""Oh! It is beautiful. Let's find a special spot on the tree for it." Every year since, they are displayed.

A few hours after I started, the filled boxes were back in the garage. The room was vacuumed and I sat staring at a barren corner. The room seemed so empty. It took me two days of work to assemble and decorate my tree, but only a few hours to take it apart.

My tree is like a good marriage or a great friendship. Like the tree, they take a long time to assemble and decorate with memories, but can be torn down quickly. All it takes is an unkind word or a thoughtless act, and what once stood proudly in the glow of love comes falling down.

Every year I have to put my tree away, but not my marriage or friendships. I take great care of those. They get to glow in the corner of my life for as long as I live. I get to analyze my tree and find memories for a few weeks every year. I can do the same with the loves in my life every day. When I held the Santa, a flood of wonderful memories returned. The same happens when I hold my wife or see the smile of a friend across the room.

Take great care of your friendships and your marriage. Once they come down, they aren't as easy to put back together as a Christmas tree, if at all. Stand them in that special spot in the corner of your heart and admire their glow.

Most Americans enjoy moving from place to place very often. In some states only one house in five has people living in it who have been there for more than five years. One may be born in one city, and go to school in another. He may finish his middle school education in two or three cities and attend a college far across the country. And when he has entered business, he may possibly move from job to job. Moving from job to job, or job-hopping, is a very common practice in the United States.

This practice is not good by and large. Yet every chance to change a job offers the worker an opportunity to move up to a higher position and to get better wages. And job-hopping also gives employers—the bosses, the managers the chance to benefit from the new ideas and skills that different people bring to their firms or factories. Then, most Americans love traveling. People often drive their automobiles 120 to 160 kilometers just to have dinner with a friend or even fly to Europe and back just for watching a football match. It is because of this—the fact that Americans are in constant motion and, in this way, it is also easy for you to become friends with Americans. And the friendship can be close and strong for a while, but then disappears as soon as the individuals move away from each other. But if these people should meet again, even years later, they would be delighted to continue the friendship. So don't be unhappy when you fail to find lifetime friendships or relationships in the United States.

110. "Job-hopping" means .

A. moving from place to place

B. looking for work

C. hoping to get a job

D. moving from job to job

111. Why do Americans change their jobs so frequently? Because .

A. they have the habits of moving

B. they want a higher position and better wages

C. job-hopping benefits the bosses

D. it gives them a good opportunity of traveling

112. It is inferred that .

A. Americans like to make friends but don't specially attach importance to it

B. it's impossible to find lifetime friendships or relationships in the United States

C. Americans ignore friendships and relationships with others

D. Americans make friends just for fun

113. Personally, the author job-hopping.

A. is against

B. thinks well of

C. wants to stop

D. doesn't go along with

These days it's more important than ever to be a good neighbor. There are places where I lived in the past and where I didn't even know my neighbors' names. I am fortunate enough now to live in an area where not only do I know my neighbors but I like them.

Some of the reasons why it's important to be a good neighbor are simple.

● They may take in your mail and paper for you while you're away.

● They look out for your home when you're on vacation and notify you if there is something wrong.

● You can alwa ys borrow that cup of sugar that you need on a Sunday morning when you just don't feel like driving to the store.

Those are the obvious reasons but more importantly, being a good neighbor just makes you feel good. My neighbor recently had knee surgery and I've taken out his trash for the last three weeks. He mows my lawn(草坪) for me in the summers so it's a

win-win. One night my car ran out of gas and who did I call? My neighbor was there with a gallon of gas in no time.

If you have never lived next to bad neighbors, you may take the good ones for granted. It's not until you move away from your college neighbors partying all night who leave beer cans in the yard that you really appreciate the good ones who are quiet and keep their yard clean.

If you have an elderly or sick neighbor, take a moment to see what they need. Clean their driveway for them, run to the store, or maybe they need to mail a letter. These things make for wonderful neighbors and some of these neighbors may turn into lifelong friends.

114. The passage is designed to tell us about .

A. the true meaning of friendship

B. the importance of good neighbors

C. the things we can do for our neighbors

D. the ways to tell good neighbors from bad ones

115. How does the author feel about his present neighbors?

A. Angry.

B. Satisfied.

C. Disappointed.

D. Proud.

116. What can we learn from Paragraph 6?

A. Being a good friend does us no good.

B. The author's neighbor broke the author's car.

C. Being a good neighbor makes us happy.

D. The author was unwilling to help his neighbor.

117. The author develops the last but one paragraph mainly by .

A. comparing different situations

B. explaining his decisions

C. criticizing bad neighbors

D. showing his habits

How to Make Friends

118. Indeed, there are many things in life which we alone cannot perform.

We need friends' help. Friends are people who willingly and readily help us when we are in trouble, and show sympathy(同情) for us when we are in misery(苦难). 119. For example, when we have passed the graduation examination and are looking for a job, we need experienced and reliable friends to guide us and help us on our way. A good friend is also an adviser because our own points of view towards things may not be always right. 120.

Of course, we can make friends everywhere. However, I think the best place is school, where we are among a big number of boys and girls of our own age, so it is easy to get to know one another in a short time.

121. In order to make friends, we ourselves must be honest, noble-minded and kind-hearted to leave a favorable impression on others since other people observe us the same way as we do.

At the same time, we should avoid bad friends, because they always do harm to us and moreover, they are dangerous to the people around. What is even worse, they destroy our friendship with good friends. 122.

A. Indeed, looking for acquaintance(熟人) with bad friends would be a serious mistake.

B. A faithful friend is hard to find.

C. Therefore, it is necessary for us to seek advice from friends.

D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

E. Besides, we can also make friends among the people who work with us in the community.

F. A proverb says “One man is not good enough to live alone in the world”.

G. The benefits of friendship are boundless(无限的) and sometimes invisible.

We can choose our friends, but usually we cannot choose our neighbors. However, to get a happy home life, we have to get along with 123. as well as possible.

An important quality in a neighbor is consideration for 124. . People should not do things 125. will disturb their neighbors unnecessarily. For example, television sets need not be played at full volume(音量) 126. loud pop music should not be played very late at night. By avoiding things likely to upset your neighbors, you can enjoy 127. friendly relationship with them.

An equally important quality is tolerance. Neighbors should do all they can to avoid disturbing other people, 128. there are times when some level of disturbance is unavoidable. 129. neighbors want to get along well with each other, they have to show their tolerance. In this way, everyone will live 130. peace.

Started in September of 2003, smile cards began appearing all around a world. They are marker of a brand new game of tag, where "you're it" because someone has done anything nice for you. Then it's your turn to do something nice for someone else but, in the process, pass the card along. This was a game of pay-it-forward: make someone smile without giving out the name, leave behind a card ask them to keep it going. It's easy and funny. Is kindness truly contagious? There's only one way to find out—join the fun! Get your smile cards, read up on some kindness ideas, and get started!

M: What a surprise we've met here, in Canada!

W: Haven't seen you for ages. Where have you been?

M: ^①I've been in China. Where were you?

W: In Thailand. I taught English there.

(Text 2)

W: Let's go over to that antique shop across the street from the hotel. I'd like to see what they have.

M: I think we'd better stay away from that place. I've heard bad things about it

the first moment I arrived here. ^②It must be a tourist trap.

(Text 3)

W: I have to go downtown tomorrow morning to have my spring dresses fitted.

M: Don't you have other clothes to wear?

W: No, none of them fit, and I can't even button up my dresses. I think I need some new clothes.

M: ^③You could take some yoga classes then.

(Text 4)

W: Did you say you're going to take a vacation next week?

M: Yes. I'm going to San Francisco for a couple of days.

W: ^④I really envy you. I wish I could get away for a while.

M: Can't you take a vacation this summer?

W: Not until the end of August.

(Text 5)

M: Oh, my God! My first class starts at 8 am!

W: Don't complain. My last class gets out at 9 pm.

M: You think you've got it bad? ^⑤Two of my classes meet at the same time. I have to tape-record one while attending the other.

(Text 6)

M: ^⑥You'll never lose weight if you listen to your stomach.

W: Just a little steak, uh…snack? A bowl of ice cream?

M: You want to look good, don't you? Think about the butter and flour…

W: You're right. But if I get too thin, my mom will make me go to the hospital again. M: Most models only eat once a day. If they can do it, so can you.

W: I agree with you, but I think people are pretty bad.

M: You lost me.

W: People are always gossiping about one another.

M: Yeah, but that's human nature.

W: We can be so critical of one another.

M: Oh, let's change the stomach, I mean, the subject. ^⑦How about some food?

(Text 7)

M: Hello, darling. Did you have a good day?

W: Not bad. The usual sort of things, meeting, phone calls, letters, you know.

M: Did you see anybody interesting?

W: ^⑧Well, Chris came into the office this morning. We had a long talk.

M: Oh, yes? What about?

W: Oh, this and that, you know.

M: I see.

W: And then Janet turned up. As usual, just when I was trying to finish some work. M: So what did you do?

W: ^⑨Had lunch with her.

M: Where did you go? Somewhere nice?

W: No. Just the pub round the corner. A pint and a pint, you know. Then in the afternoon there was a meeting. It went on for hours.

M: ^⑩Sounds like a boring day. Did anything interesting happen?

W: Don't think so. Not really. Can't remember.

(Text 8)

W: ^?How important are friends to you, Bill?

M: I've never had many friends. I've never regarded them as particularly important. Perhaps that's because I come from a big family-two brothers and three sisters, and lots of cousins. ^?That's what's really important to me. My family. The different members of my family. If you really need help, you get it from your family, don't you? Well, at least that's what I've always found. What about you, Emma?

W: To me friendship…having friends…people I know I can really trust…?^?to me that's the most important thing in life. It's more important even than love. If you love someone, you can always fall out of love again, and that can lead to a lot of hurt feelings, bitterness, and so on. But a good friend is a friend for life.

(Text 9)

W: Hi. ^?I haven't seen you for ages. What's up?

M: Hi. I have some bad news. ^?I got fired.

W: Oh, no! You must be kidding. You told me last time it was a good job and

you'd like to take it as a career. That was only one week ago. How come?

M: It's a long story. In a word, I didn't do a good job of it. I messed up a business deal, a deal that would make ten million dollars and I messed it up.

W: I'm sorry, man. Then what are you going to do now?

M: I'm looking for a job. Mary doesn't know yet. ^?I spent the last three days at a coffee shop. She thought I went to work as usual.

W: That's not the way to solve the problem. Did you check the classified ads? M: Yes, but I don't think they'll work out. I found some good ones, but I'm not qualified though.

W: Oh, poor guy!

(Text 10)

W: I attend English classes at a language program in my city because I want to improve my communication skills. ^?English has become the international language around the world, and I might be able to get better employment and make more friends if I learn to speak fluently. I take four classes a day that all
