录音原文

Section A

11. M: The service in this restaurant is really terrible.

W: Right. It’s high time they got rid of half of the staff here, it you ask me.

Q: What conclusion can we draw from the conversation? [C]

12. W: Could you have my bike ready before 10:00? Recently the brake hasn’t worked well.

M: Sure, I’ll check it. That won’t be a big problem. You may come and pick it up before 10:00. Q: Where did this conversation most probably take place? [B]

13. M: I’m having trouble fitting into my jeans. Looks like I’ll have to get some new ones.

W: Oh, you wouldn’t do that if you just cut down on what you eat.

Q: What does the woman imply the man should do? [B]

14. W: Paul would be much wiser to stay in this country another year finishing his Master’s

Degree than to rush home and to take over his uncle’s business now. Don’t you think so? M: Yes, I couldn’t agree with you more.

Q: What does the man mean? [C]

15. W: Dou think Professor Green will make you redo the entire experiment?

M: I don’t know. I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Q: What is the man planning to do? [D]

16. M: The washing machine in our apartment is more than seventeen years old, and it worked just

fine until last night.

W: You’ll never be able to get parts for it. It might be time to invest in a more recent model..

Q: What does the woman imply about the washing machine? [D]

17. M: There is Nick on his motorcycle. Did he take it to the garage to be fixed?

W: Don’t be foolish. That would have been a waste of money. It only had a flat tire.

Q: What does the woman imply? [A]

18. W: You took an optional course this semester, didn’t you? How is it going?

M: Terrible. It seems like the more the professor talks, the less I understand.

Q: How does the man feel about the course? [B]

Conversation One

M: Good morning, Mrs. Green. You want to see me?

W: Yes, Jim. Let’s review what you’ve done so far. You were hired as a mail clerk about five years ago. You’ve learned a lot since then, haven’t you?

M: Sure. I learned more about the company because I went around to different offices. Then I was promoted to mail distribution clerk. That’s two grades higher than the mail clerk. So I skipped

a grade. I went from Grade 1 to Grade 3.

W: Did you like that job?

M: Yeah, my pay went up, and every year I moved up a step. Every time I moved up a step, I got a pay raise. It was a Grade 3, Step F. But I didn’t go outside. I was usually in the mail room. I was in charge of the other messenger clerks.

W: You were a boss.

M: Right. After three years, the manager said he wanted to help me move up. They gave me a little

test----arithmetic, alphabetizing, and some typing.

W: You did well on the test.

M: Yes. I did well because I studied at an adult school, and I practiced at home before the test. So I got this job as senior clerk. I’m a Grade 5 now.

W: Well, Jim, here is another chance to move up the ladder. The Mail Department is getting some new computers. We will give everybody two days of training. The people who learn quickly can go to school for more training.

M: You mean going to school on company time? Go to school instead of coming to work?

W: Yes, because it will help you in your work later. You can be promoted to production programming after you’ve learned to use computer. The job starts at Grade 7.

M: Well, I’d like to think about it for a few days. Maybe I should stay where I am now. Questions19 and 22 are based on the conversation you’ve just heard.

19. What is mainly discussed in the conversation? [B]

20. How many years did it take the man to move up to Grade 5? [C]

21. Who can get the chance to go to school for more training? [D]

22. What can be inferred from the conversation? [B]

Conversation Two

M: Hello, Mary. Fancy meeting you here!

W: Hi, Peter. Yes, I’m here again, and there always seems to be a queue. I’m writing a report for my economics class. How about you?

M: I’m still working on my essay for environmental science. I need to check a reference.

W: You know, when I first started doing my report I was frightened to use these computer catalogues. I was sure something would go wrong.

M: But they’re so useful. You can see at a glance what books you need and if they’re checked out or not.

W: I know that now, but at the beginning I really missed the card catalogues. But anyway I still have the same problem as I used to have, knowing what to look up!

M: Yes, I agree, it’s the same for me. Last week I must have wasted two hours looking for information on a topic I was working on.

W: Really? What was the topic?

M: It was about the effect of smoking by parents on their children’s sleep. I looked up sleeping, child psychology, child development, problems in social work, children’s medical problems, and I can’t remember what else. In the end, I had to go back and as my tutor for help.

W: You know, I took a study skills class because I thought it would help me locate information, and all I learned was how to read the cards, which wasn’t of much help! My real problem is knowing what card to look up.

M: yes, and that takes thinking! Pity the computer can’t do that for us.

W: Maybe it will some day. Oh, look, there’s a free computer now.

M: Yes, thanks. See you!

Questions 23 and 25 are based on the conversation you’ve just heard.

Section B

Passage One

Runners in a relay race pass a stick in one direction. However, merchants passed silk, gold, fruit, and glass along the Silk Road in more than one direction. They earned their living by traveling the famous Silk Road.

The Silk Road was not a simple trading network. It passed through thousands of cities and towns. It started from eastern China, across Central Asia and the Middle East, and ended in the Mediterranean Sea. It was used from about 200 B.C. to about A.D. 1300, when sea travel offered new routes. It was sometimes called the world’s longest highway. However, the Silk Road was made up of many routes, not one smooth path. They passed through what are now 18 countries. The routes crossed mountains and deserts and had many dangers of hot sun, deep snow and even battles. Only experienced traders could return safe.

The Silk Road got its name from its most prized product. Silk could be used like money to pay taxes or buy goods. But the traders carried more than just silk. Gold, silver, and glass from Europe were much found in the Middle East and Asia. Horses traded from other areas changed farming practices in China. Indian merchants traded salt and other valuable goods. Chinese merchants traded paper, which produced an immediate effect on the West. Apples traveled from central Asia to Rome. The Chinese had learned to graft (to join a part of a plant or tree onto another plant or tree) different trees together to make new kinds of fruit. The Romans used grafting to grow the apple. Trading along the Silk Road led to worldwide business 2,000 years before the World Wide Web.

The people along the Silk Road did not share just goods. They also shared their beliefs. The Silk Road provided pathways for learning, diplomacy, and religion.

Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you’ve just heard.

26. What was needed for traders along the Silk Road to do? [D]

27. Why did the Silk Road become less important? [C]

28. Why could new technologies travel along the Silk Road? [A] Passage Two

The evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that for out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-held image of unhappy teenagers locked in their rooms after endless family quarrels.

An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it has ever been in the past. “We were surprised by just how positive today’s young people seem to be about their families,”said one member of the research team. “They’re expected to be rebellious and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds; they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There’s more negotiation and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don’t want to rock the boat.”

So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends. “My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me,” says 17-year-old Daniel Lazall. “I always tell them when I’m going out clubbing. As long as they know what I’m doing, they’re fine with it.” Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees. “Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example, as long as I’d done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that.”

Questions 29 to32 are based on the passage you’ve just heard.

29. What is the popular image of teenagers today? [B]

30. What do we know about teenagers according to the study? [D]

31. What do we know about today’s parents compared with parents of 30 years ago? [A]

32. What is the passage mainly about? [C] Passage Three

I first went to Harrow in the summer term. The school had the biggest swimming pool I had ever seen. It was a good joke to come up behind a naked boy, and push him into the pool. I made quite a habit of this with boys of my own size or less.

One day I saw a boy wrapped in a towel on the side of the pool. He was no bigger than I was, so I thought him a fair game. Coming secretly behind, I pushed him in, holding on to his tower so that it would not get wet. I was surprised to see an angry face come out from the water, and a being of great strength making its way by face strokes to the shore. I fled, but in vain. He overtook me, seized me violently, and threw me into the deepest part of the pool. I soon climbed out on the other side, and found myself surrounded by a crowd of younger boys. “Do you know what you have done?” they said. “ It’s Amery; he is in Grade Six. He is champion at gym; he has got his football honor.”

I was frightened and felt ashamed. How could I tell his position when he was wrapped in a bath towel and so small. He didn’t seem pleased at all, so I added in a most brilliant word, “My father, who is a great man, is also small.” At this he laughed, and after some general words about my rude behavior and how I had better be careful in the future, signified the incident was closed. Questions 33 to35 are based on the passage you’ve just heard.

33. Why did the speaker think Amery “a fair game”? [B]

34. What did the speaker feel ashamed? [C]

35. Which is true according to the passage? [D]

Section C

Sixteen-year-old Michael Viscardsi of San Diego won first prize int the Siemens Westinghouse Competition in Math, Science and Technology. He showed solutions to a nineteen-century math problem.

Michael has been schooled by his mother, who has a doctorate in neuroscience. He also worked on his project with a professor at a university.

The National center for Education Statistics did its latest research on home-schooling in 2003. Researchers found that more than on million American students learned at home. That was more than two percent of the school-age population.

Michael Viscardsi, for example, has been taught mostly at home, but with advanced

math classes at a local university.

The researchers asked parents why they home-schooled their children. Thirty-one percent said the most important reason was concerned about the environment of the local schools. Thirty percent said it was to provide religious instruction. Sixteen percent said they were not satisfied with the quality of the instruction in the local schools.

It is recently reported that there is an increase in the number of black Americans home-school their children. . An education expert said much of this increase was in cities with histories of racial tension. Also, some families were concerned that local schools were not teaching about African-American history and culture.

Critics of home-schooling say children need to attend school to help them learn social skills. They also say that home-schooled children do not get a very good education. Still, all fifty states and the District of Columbia permit home-schooling, but some require more parent preparation or student testing than other states do.

参考答案

Part ⅠWriting

Honesty

Honesty is not only one of the most important personal qualities. It also plays a significant role in the society. It is our wealth and way to success. It is the fundamental factor that our society develops in a healthy and sustainable way.

Unfortunately, our society today seems to be faced with a lack of honesty. You don’t need far for evidence. Nowadays people are troubled with mass of dishonest behaviors here and there. Teachers get annoyed when they catch students cheating on exams; consumers get hurt when they unfortunately buy some fake products; children are misled when they see their parents tell lies so as to evade the responsibility they should take.

As college students, we should realize the importance of honesty and form a good habit of being truly honest with others and with ourselves. As long as we take honesty seriously, we can be trustworthy.
