今天，那种古老的祖传手艺在很大程度上已为机器操作者简单的动作所取代。我们使用的玻璃制品、瓷器、家具、书籍和纺织品几乎全都是机器生产的。然而，谁也不会否认，机器制品可以做到设计精巧、式样美观。现在许多人认为，要是手工艺人的技艺完全失传的话，那准是一场灾难。
他们的理由，归纳起来大体上有三点。首先，机器生产本来就是大批量生产，而由个体工匠单个制成的物品则比机器生产的更好、甚至更便宜。其次，人的手工借助于简单的工具能生产高质量的物品，这是机器望尘莫及的。第三，如果人类丧失了用双手进行创造的能力，那对他们来说，并不是一件好事。

由一位教授和二三十名学生每周会晤两三次，每次授课时间45分钟到50分钟，是大学程度课堂教学的传统方式。最普遍的教学方式是讲课。较大的班以讲课为主要教学方法时，也会拨出一定时间由助教领导进行小组讨论。如果班小，比较随便，便可以既讲课有讨论指定的读物、规定的教科书和其他课外资料。
学生听讲时，如能写下正确而笔迹清楚的笔记，那将非常有用。学生不但在听讲时必须记笔记，在上课前也应如此。笔记做得好的关键在于能听进很多内容而只写下其要点。所以学生应该努力辨别出老师所讲的主要论点和意见并把其概要记下，他们也应努力把笔记第一次就做好而不要准备重抄一遍——只有需要清楚或简洁时才重抄。最后，他们还应该在做笔记的当天再看它五分钟，并且按计划安排每星期至少看一次，约三十分钟。没有要背的讲义；考试时所依据的是讲课里的资料和教科书。
