I've alas been an optimist and I suppose that is rooted

in m belief that the poer of reativit and intelligene an make the orld a better plae.

For as long as I an remember, I've loved learning ne things and solving problems. So hen I sat don at a puter for the first time in seventh grade, I as hooked. It as a lunk

old Teletpe mahine and it ould barel do anthing pared to the puters e have toda. But it hanged m life.

When m friend Paul Allen and I started Mirosoft 30 ears ago, e had a vision of "a puter on ever desk and in ever home," hih probabl sounded a little too optimisti at a time hen most puters ere the size of refrigerators. But e believed that personal puters ould hange the orld. And the have.

And after 30 ears, I'm still as inspired b puters as I as bak in seventh grade.

I believe that puters are the most inredible tool e an use to feed our uriosit and inventiveness —— to help us solve problems that even the smartest people ouldn't solve on their on.

Computers have transformed ho e learn, giving kids everhere a indo into all of the orld's knoledge. The're helping us build munities around the things e are about and

As a father, I believe that the death of a hild in Afria is no less poignant or tragi than the death of a hild anhere else. And that it doesn't take muh to make an immense differene in these hildren's lives.
