The new president of Harvard University is the son of an Eastern European refugee and Auschwitz (奥斯威辛) survivor—Lawrence S. Bacow. His father worked full time while attending a state college in Detroit at night to earn his degree.

Bacow, the former president of Tufts University, has taken over Harvard at a time when higher education is under attack for being financially out of reach to many Americans. But Bacow said his family's journey had reflected the power of college education to transform generations and the opportunities that have historically been available in the United States.

"My parents came to this country with almost nothing," Bacow said. "I wouldn't be here if this country had not been open to people like my parents at that time. Nor would I if my father hadn't had the opportunity to get the college education."

Bacow grew up in Pontiac, Michigan. His father's family fled anti-Jewish (反犹太的) violence in Minsk, then part of the Soviet Union, before the start of World War II and went to the United States. His mother arrived in Brooklyn at age 19, having survived Auschwitz concentration camp. She was the only Jew from her town to have survived the war. Yet Bacow, who is married with two sons, said that while growing up in Michigan, he had a happy childhood, entering science fairs as a child and building radios like his dad.

Bacow has spent most of his professional career at MIT, Harvard and Tufts. He was a professor of environmental studies at MIT, and later a principal at the university. He led Tufts from 2001 to 2011. At Tufts, Bacow earned a reputation for shaking up a sleepy university that was being overshadowed by its peers in Boston. He is also credited with leading it through both 9/11 and the 2008 financial crisis.

As the Tufts president, Bacow traveled around the country, reaching out to alumni (校友), and he urged his faculty and deans to do the same, in an effort to boost donations to finance Tufts' academic ambitions. He raised more than $20 million for faculty recruitment, attracting up-and-coming professors by offering junior faculty perks (福利), such as long academic leaves that they couldn't get elsewhere.

Under Bacow's leadership, Tufts spent millions on labs and libraries. He also made addresses nationally about the need to make higher education more accessible and affordable to low-income students.

In the nineteenth century, one of America's greatest writers, Walt Whitman, helped people learn to value poetry. Whitman created a new kind of poetry.

Walt Whitman was born in eighteen nineteen in New York City. During his long life, he watched America grow from a young nation to the strongest industrial power in the world. As a young man, Whitman worked as a school teacher, a printer and a newspaper reporter. He was thirty-six

years old when he published his first book of poetry in eighteen fifty-five. He called it Leaves of Grass. It had only twelve poems. The poems are written in free verse. The lines do not follow any set form. Some lines are short. Some are long. The words at the end of each line do not have a similar sound. They do not rhyme.

One of America's greatest thinkers and writers immediately recognized the importance of Leaves of Grass. Ralph Waldo Emerson praised Whitman's work. But most other poets and writers said nothing and even denounced it. Most readers also rejected Whitman's poems. The new form of his poetry surprised many people. Even his own brother told Whitman that he should stop writing poetry. But Whitman had many things to say. And he continued to say them. Readers began to understand that America had a great new poetic voice.

Walt Whitman's poems praise the United States and its democracy. The poet expressed his love for America and its people in many ways. Experts today praise Leaves of Grass as a major literary work. In eighteen seventy-three, Walt Whitman suffered a stroke. He spent the last years of his life in Camden, New Jersey. Whitman was poor and weak during the last years of his life. He died in eighteen ninety-two. Some critics say Walt Whitman was a spokesman for democracy. Others say he was not a spokesman for anything. Instead, they simply call him a great poet.

B. He is the first great poet in the USA

D. His poems show his love for his country.

(2)Why was Leaves of Grass refused at first?

3.Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have read. In 1888 an Egyptian farmer digging in the sand near the village of Istabl Antar uncovered a mass grave. The bodies weren't human. They were feline —ancient cats that had been mummified(木乃伊化的) and buried in holes in astonishing numbers. "Not one or two here and there", reported English Illustrated Magazine, "but dozens, hundreds, hundreds of thousands, a layer of them, a layer thicker than most coal joints, ten to twenty cats deep. " Some of the linen-wrapped cats still looked presentable, and a few even had golden faces. Village children peddled the best ones to tourists for change; the rest were sold as fertilizer. One ship transported about 180,000, weighing some 38, 000 pounds, to Liverpool to be spread on the fields of England.

Those were the days of generously funded explorations—that dragged through acres of desert in their quest for royal tombs, and for splendid gold and painted masks to decorate the estates and museums of Europe and America. The many thousands of mummified animals that turned up at religious sites throughout Egypt were just things to be cleared away to get at the good stuff. Few people studied them, and their importance was generally unrecognized.

In the century since then, archaeology has become less of a treasure hunt and more of a science. Archaeologists now realize that much of their sites' wealth lies in the majority of details about ordinary folks—what they did, what they thought, how they prayed. And animal mummies are a big part of that.

"They're really displays of daily life," says Egyptologist Salima Ikram. After peering beneath bandages with x-rays and cataloguing her findings, she created a gallery for the collection — a bridge between people today and those of long ago. "You look at these mummified animals, and suddenly you say, Oh, King So-and-So had a pet. I have a pet. And instead of being at a distance of 5,000-plus years, the ancient Egyptians become clearer and closer to us."

(1)Which of the following words has the closest meaning to "peddled"(paragraph 1)? A. modernized B. displayed C. illustrated D. demonstrated

(2)Why was archaeology once referred to as a "treasure hunt "(paragraph 3)?

A. In the royal tombs, there were many treasures made of silver and gold.

B. Animal mummies could be made into fertilizer which is very valuable.

C. It was hard to find animal mummies since they were buried under dirt.

D. People sought the remains of ancient Egypt merely for their material value.

(3)Which of the following is TRUE about Salima Ikram?

A. She wishes to establish the continuity of pets over history.

B. She believes that studying the remains can help modern society relate to the past.

C. She wants to identify the King's personal belongings and classify them.

D. She doubts if current society will understand the significance of Egyptian remains.

(4)This article probably encourages the readers to _____________.

A. value the past by studying the remains left behind by our ancestors

B. make full use of the remains our ancestors have left behind

C. understand that animal mummies are more important than gold and masks

D. become more sensitive to the ancient lifestyle of our ancestors

【答案】(1)B

(2)D

Village children peddled the best ones to tourists for change; the rest were sold as fertilizer."

以及第三段中的“ In the century since then, archaeology has become less of a treasure hunt and more of a science.”

根据最后一段中的“she created a gallery for the collection —a bridge between people today and those of long ago.” You look at these mummified animals, and suddenly you say, Oh, King So-and-So had a pet. I have a pet. And instead of being at a distance of 5,000-plus years, the ancient Egyptians become clearer and closer to us."

About 6 years ago, I was on a plane next to a woman. I was tired and wanted to take a nap. But before I could go into "ignore pattern", she tapped me on the shoulder to introduce herself.

"Hi, my name is Helga!"

We got to talking and eventually it came up that I had started an organization in high school called R.A.K.E.(Random Acts of Kindness, Etc.). As I described what we did, Helga got very serious and told me that she admired me for that. She told me a story about the last time she had flown. She was on the way to Arizona because she had gotten sudden news that her dad's health was on the decline. Later her father's physician called to inform her that her dad had rather suddenly passed away. For the 3-hour plane ride, she sat in silence around strangers.

When she arrived at the airport in Arizona, she walked to the nearest wall, sat down, and cried. And here is the part I'll never forget about Helga's story. For 2 hours she sat and wept while thousands walked to and fro in the airport. Helga looked at me and said, "Houston, not a single person stopped and asked if I was okay that day." It was that day that I realized how much we need each other. It was that day I realized that kindness isn't normal.

Kindness isn't normal. That has stuck with me all these years especially now. I work in schools nationwide speaking about sympathy, kindness, empathy (同理心) and love. I'm reminded all the time that, for many of us, kindness is not usually our default setting. We spend so much time worrying about our problems, our lives, our insecurities, getting to our flight so we walk by or ignore people in need of help.

So, I've made it my mission to do my part in sharing stories with students, teachers, and parents about our need for character and sympathy. I'm always be on the lookout for the little opportunities that surround me every day to do something nice.

B. Helga had no one to talk to on her flight to Arizona.

C. Helga was ignored by people around her when she cried.

D. Helga couldn't get over her sadness over her Father's death.

(2)Which can best explain the underlined part "default setting" in paragraph 5?

A. Usual way of doing things.

B. Unexpected way to do things.

C. Ignorance to people around.

D. Biggest surprise to others.

Generally speaking, people like those who have a good sense of humor.

Sometimes a touch of humor might well enable us to win. Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who hit a traffic jam on his way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum (最后通牒) about being late on the job. Although there was a good reason for Brian's being late—serious illness at home—he decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldn't work any longer. His boss was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech.

Yes, the boss was, as Brian entered the office at 9:35. The place was as quiet as a locker room

(更衣室): everyone was hard at work. Brian's boss came up to him. Suddenly, Brian forced a smile and stretched out his hand. "How do you do!" he said. "I'm Brian. I'm applying for a job, which, I understand, became available just 35 minutes ago. Doesn't the early bird get the worm?"

The room exploded in laughter. The boss clamped off a smile and walked back to his office. Brian had saved his job, with the only tool that could win—a laugh.

Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying "no", criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs, it's the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialog may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance (忍受力) than people in any other forum.

(1)Brian was late for his job because ________.

A. he got up late

B. he was seriously ill

C. he was caught in a traffic jam

D. he was busy applying for a new job

(2)What can we infer about humor?

A. It is the early bird.

B. It is important in our lives.

C. Brian often saved his job with humor.

D. It can solve racial discriminations.

(3)What does the underlined phrase "clamped off" in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A. charge

B. tried to set

C. gave up

D. tried to hold back

(4)What can we learn from the text?

A. Many people lack in a sense of humor.

B. Brian was supposed to arrive at his office at 8: 30.

C. It wasn't the first time that Brian came late for work.

D. Humor is the most interesting way of solving problems.

【答案】(1)C

(2)B

(3)D

(4)C

When my father married my mother in 1943 he gave my mother a 1937 crown coin and told her to keep it in the back of her purse and not spend it. This would mean that she always felt that she was protected and would always have money if she really needed it.

When I was married in 1970 my husband who had heard this story obtained a 1937 crown for me and I have always kept it in my wallet and I have always had enough for my needs.

A friend recently fell on hard times partly through external (外部的) circumstances and partly through poor planning. Friends and I have loaned her money, paid her bills, even given her food and tried to teach her budget techniques, but none of them has been a solution. She has just slipped deeper and deeper into financial trouble and depression.

Last week she looked pale and unwell, very depressed and hopeless. I then thought about how the crown, a reminder of another's care and love, had protected me so I went to the bank for a $100 dollar bill. I told my friend the story and asked her to keep the $100 in the back of her wallet. It turned out that she didn't have a wallet so she put the money in a little pencil case where she kept her coins. She immediately felt better. "I feel rich and thank you for being a good friend" she said and we were both a bit teary.

The reason for passing this on is not to praise any generosity on my part but to show the power of "random acts of kindness". I went home and remembered a little wallet I had that I'd never used and thought "I'll give that to my friend." I opened it and inside found $100. The universe is very just and if your heart is open the reward always comes.

(1)What did the 1937 crown coin from the author's father mean to her mother?

A. His concern for her.

B. His pity and protection for her.

C. His care and love for her.

D. His pride and respect for her.

(2)Where did the author's friend keep the $100 dollar-bill?

A. In the back of her wallet.

B. In a little pencil case.

C. In the pocket of her raincoat.

D. In the layer of her suitcase.

(3)What can he inferred from the last Paragraph?

A. The author became rich all of a sudden.

B. The author's friend would receive a wallet as a gift.

C. The author's friend was not touched by her story.

D. The author felt uncomfortable when receiving the bill.

(4)What can be the best title for the text?

A. A hard life

B. The help to a friend

C. A crown coin

D. A gift from my father

7.Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

Milton Hershey was born near the small village of Derry Church, Pennsylvania, in 1857. He only attended school through the fourth grade; at that point, he was apprenticed(做学徒) to a printer in a nearby town. After a while, he left the printing business and was apprenticed to a Lancaster, Pennsylvania candy maker. And at the age of eighteen, he opened his own candy store in Philadelphia. In spite of his talents as a candy maker, the shop failed after six years.

After the failure of his Philadelphia store, Milton headed for Denver, where he learned the art of making caramels(焦糖). Then in Denver, Milton once again attempted to open his own candy-making businesses, in Chicago, New Orleans, and New York City. Finally, in 1886, he went to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he raised the money necessary to try again. This company— the Lancaster Caramel Company—established Milton's reputation as a master candy maker.

In 1893, Milton attended the Chicago International Exposition, where he saw a display of German chocolate-making implements. Fascinated by the equipment, he purchased it for his Lancaster candy factory and began producing chocolate, which he used for coating his caramels. By the next year, production had grown to include cocoa, sweet chocolate, and baking chocolate. The Hershey Chocolate company was born in 1894 as a subsidiary(子公司) of the Lancaster

Caramel Company. Six years later, Milton sold the caramel company, but reserved the rights, and the equipment, to make chocolate. He believed that a large market of chocolate consumers was waiting for someone to produce reasonably priced candy. He was right.

Milton Hershey returned to the village where he had been born, in the heart of dairy country, and opened his chocolate manufacturing plant. With access to all the fresh milk he needed, he began producing the finest milk chocolate. The plant that opened in a small Pennsylvania village in 1905 is today the largest chocolate factory in the world. The sweets created at this facility are favorites around the world.

The area where the factory is located is now known as Hershey, Pennsylvania. Within the first decades of its existence, the town of Hershey thrived, as did the chocolate business. A bank, a school, churches, a department store, even a park and a trolley system all appeared in short order; the town soon even had a zoo. Today, a visit to the area reveals the Hershey Medical Center, Milton Hershey School, and Hershey's Chocolate World—a theme park where visitors are greeted by a giant Reeses Peanut Butter Cup. All of these things— and a huge number of happy chocolate lovers—were made possible because a caramel maker visited the Chicago Exposition of 1893!

(1)The mention of the 1893 Exposition indicates that _______.

A. the exposition in Chicago is held once every three years.

B. the theme of the exposition of 1893 was "Food from Around the World."

C. the exposition contained displays from a variety of countries.

D. the site of the exposition is now a branch of the Hershey Chocolate Company.

(2)According to the passage, Milton Hershey sold his caramel company in _______.

A. 1894

B. 1900

C. 1904

D. 1905

(3)What can you infer from the passage?

A. Chocolate is popular in every country in the world.

B. Reeses Peanut Butter Cups are manufactured by the Hershey Chocolate Company.

C. Chocolate had never been manufactured in the United States before Milton Hershey did it.

D. The Hershey Chocolate Company now makes more money from Hershey's Chocolate World than from the manufacture and sale of chocolate.

(4)The author wrote this passage mainly to _______.

A. recount the founding of the Hershey Chocolate Company

B. describe the process of manufacturing chocolate

Violette Childe, 67, is a dining companion who helps serve patients lunches. The role was introduced ten years ago by a dietitian concerning that some patients were not eating their meals. "Many of our patients are elderly and can be confused by the noisy, busy environment of the hospital and so won't focus on eating." explains Yvonne Donglas-Morris, head of volunteering, who oversees the activities of all 528 of the trusty volunteers. "Staff are busy with the clinical side of things, so the dining companions were introduced. They will assist the patients and encourage them to eat."

Violette, a retired library manager, has been helping out for six years. "It makes me feel a bit more complete," she says simply. "Helping with the meals frees up the nurses to get on with other things. I believe in being a part of the community and this hospital is part of my community."

Another key role is played by the discharge volunteers, who offer support to the elderly, especially those aged 70 and over-leaving hospital to return to an empty home. The team has a budget of £10 per person and will pop to the shops and buy milk, bread and a meal to tide them over for the first few hours. They then call the patients regularly, for as long as they need, to check how they are getting on and if they need extra support.

The volunteers in Kingston work from a dedicated office-a small room in one of the buildings on the hospital grounds, where a Christmas tree decorated with baubles (小饰物) bearing the faces of volunteers sits in the corner. "All the volunteers come and gather here, it gets very busy

at times," smiles Nicola Hutin, 67, a discharge support volunteer. A mother of two, and grandmother of four, she was a membership coordinator (协调员) for a trade association until she retired, and has since volunteered at the hospital one morning a week for 18 months.

(3)What does a discharge volunteer do for the patients?

A. Raise money for the elderly.

B. Pay a visit to them at home

C. Buy daily necessities for them.

D. Ring to check their health condition.

(4)Which of the following can best describe the theme of the text?

根据第四段中的“They then call the patients regularly, for as long as they need, to check how they are getting on a nd if they need extra support.”

根据最后一段中的“The volunteers in Kingston work from a dedicated office-a small room in one of the buildings on the hospital grounds, where a Christmas tree decorated with baubles (小饰物) bearing the faces of volunteers sits in the corner.”

Nine years ago, a few days before Christmas, I was a director at a company in San Francisco, and I was called into a meeting that was already in progress. That meeting turned out to be my exit interview. I was 64 years old at the time. It wasn't completely unexpected. I signed a pile of papers and left the company.

So, 40 plus years of employment was over. I had a good reputation and background. Retirement was not a choice for me. I wanted to do something. And then an idea came into my mind, born from my concern for our environment. I wanted to build my own business, designing and producing biodegradable(可生物降解的)packaging from waste. This is called clean technology, and it was really meaningful to me. It could help reduce billions of pounds of single-use plastic packaging wasted each year.

Five years later, I'm delighted and proud to share with you that our income has doubled every year and we have no debt. Meanwhile, I have a wonderful partner, and we've won more than 20 awards for the work that we've done.

And I am doing the most rewarding and meaningful work of my life right now. But what I really long for is to find other first-time entrepreneurs(企业家)who are my age. I want to connect with them.

So I want to do something about that in a few years. I want us to start talking more about people who don't become entrepreneurs until they are seniors. And then connecting all of them across industries, regions and countries—building a community.

(1)What happened to the author nine years ago?

A. He retired from his former company.

B. He failed an interview.

C. He had a good family background.

D. He changed his job to a better one.

(2)Why was the new business meaningful to the author?

A. It was beneficial to the environment.

B. It developed a clean technology.

C. It provided jobs for lots of people.

D. It brought in quite a lot of money.

(3)What is the author's attitude to the development of his own company?

A. Cautious.

B. Disappointed.

C. Ambiguous.

D. Positive.

(4)What does the author plan to do in the future?

A. To do something else about environment.

B. To help people who want to become successful.

C. To meet more people from different backgrounds.

D. To build a community for senior entrepreneurs.

It was a morning in January. The jet stream (急流)had dipped down, causing the Arctic cold to reach the mountains of my home. It was only 2 degrees outside, but the cold wind made it feel like it was 15 below zero. Still, I was kneeling in the snow alongside my house trying to open a tiny door, so I eoukl get in. 1 had forgotten to leave my water dripping the night before and now my water pipes were frozen and my faucets(水龙头)were dry.

The wind cut into me like a knife while I struggled to get two electric heaters in place around the section of frozen pipes. The waterlines were buried except for a small piece that connected up to my house. I put a heater on each side of it, ran the extension cords(软线)into my house and plugged them in. Both heaters roared to life and started blowing hot air on the frozen water pipes. My fingers had already started to go numb, so I stayed inside to wait. I could only hope that this bit of warmth could get my water flowing again. Finally, after twenty minutes, the water started flowing through my faucets again. I went back outside into the biller cold and gathered my heaters up. I looked at the weak January sun shining on the frozen snow and smiled. Then I sent a joy filled with "Thank you" heavenward and returned inside to make myself a hot breakfast.

Sometimes the coldness of this life can get to us as well. It can make our hearts feel icy and frozen. It can keep our kindness and love from flowing out to others. Sometimes, though, all we need is a bit of warnth to get us going again. It can be a simple smile, a kind word, a heart-felt hug, a morning sunrise, a bird's song or any gentle reminder of just how much God loves us. Let us all be grateful for those bits of warmth that gel us going again. And let us all try to be that bit of wannth for others every chance we get.

(1)What was the direct reason why the water pipes were frozen?

A. The jet stream.

B. The low temperature.

C. The cold wind.

D. The author's own carelessness.

(2)Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase "roared to" in Paragraph 2?

A. Began functioning smoothly.

B. Worked inappropriately.

C. Broke down suddenly.

D. Screamed out loudly.

(3)What did the author think of his work?

A. Embarassed.

B. Satisfied.

C. Mad with joy.

D. Cautiously optimistic.(4)What is the last paragraph mainly centered on?

A. The coldness of life has a negative effect on our life quality.

B. We meet with the coldness of life unavoidably and unwillingly.

C. We should be thankful for bits of warmth of life.

D. We should seize every chance to receive warmth of life from others.

【答案】(1)D

(2)A

(3)B

(4)C

根据第一段中的“I had forgotten to leave my water dripping the night before and now my water pipes were frozen and my faucets (水龙头) were dry” 可知,头天晚上我忘记了让水龙头的水一直处于滴水的状态,现在水管冻结了,水龙头也流不出水了。

根据第二段中的“... and started blowing hot air on the frozen water pipe…after twenty minutes, the water started flowing through my faucets again”可知,两个加热器开始向冻结的水管吹热空气,…

根据第二段中的“I looked at the weak January sun shining on the frozen snow and smiled. Then I sent a joy filled with "Thank you" heavenward and returned inside to make myself a hot breakfast.”中的smiled和“a joy filled with "Thank you"”可知,作者对自己的工作很满意。

Let us all be grateful for those bits of warmth that

gel us going again. And let us all try to be that bit of warmth for others every chance we get.”

A. had been working; are still working B. had worked; were still working C. have been working; have worked D. have worked; are still working 此题的时间参照点是before I joined them,,所以第一个空应该用过去完成进行时,第二个空根据时间now用现在进行时。 2. It would be a good idea to use a plastic bottle, ___cut off, as a container to grow young plants in. A. of which the top B. the top is C. the top of which D. with its top 此题是独立主格结构,如果题干改为 ____is cut off,答案则为A或C 3. ______ is it _____ has made Peter _____ he is today? A. What; that; that B. That; that; what C. What; what; that D. What; that; what 用还原法则为 It is what that has made Peter what he is today k可知是强调句式。 4. Before he went abroad,he spent as much time as he _____ English. A. could learning B. learned C. to learn D. could learn spend time (in) doing sth 如果改为he did what he ______, 则答案为could to learn. 5. The person we talked about ____ our school last week. A.visiting B.will visit C.visited D.has visited 此题中包含一个定语从句,the person既作先行词,又作句子的主语,要填入的应该是句子的谓语,根据后面的时间状语为last week,应选过去时。 观察下面三个句子: □The pers on we spoke to ____ no answer at first. A.making B.makes C.make D.made 此题中也包含一个定语从句we spoke to,the person既作先行词,又作句子的主语,要填入的应该是句子的谓语,根据句子的需要,应选过去时。 □The person we referred to(提及)____ us a report tomorrow. A.giving B.will give C.gave D.give 同上题一样,句中包含定语从句we referred to,所缺成份为句子的谓语,又根据句中的tomorrow,故用将来时。选B。 □The days we have been looking forward to ____ soon. A.coming B.will come C.came D.have come 同理,此句中的定语从句包含短语look forward to,虽然to 为介词,但并不影响主句的谓语动词,只是一个陷阱而矣。 B。 6. A. whose B. its C. which D. that 答案为B。 7. You should treat him (in) the way ____ suits him most. A. that B. in which C. / D. why 此题中先行词the way 后面的定语从句中充当主语。
