第一部分:阅读理解(共15题,每题2分,满分30分)

阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

A

There are many popular American words and expressions. Some of them are very old. Some are new. Together, they form the living speech of the American people.

Today we tell about the expression “down to earth”. Down to earth means being open and honest. It is easy to deal with someone who is down to earth. Down-to-earth people could be important members of society. But they do not consider themselves to be better than others who are less important. They do not let their importance “go to their heads”.

A person who is filled with his own importance and pride is said to be “with his nose in the air”. Often the person who holds his nose in the open air has no reason to feel better than others. He surely is the opposite of someone who is down to earth.

Americans use another expression that is similar in some ways to down to earth. The expression is “both feet on the ground”. Someone with both feet on the ground is a person with a good understanding of reality. She has what is called “common sense”. She may have dreams. But she does not allow them to block her understanding of what is real.

The opposite kind of person is one who has his “head in the clouds”. Someone with his head in the clouds is a person whose mind is not on what is happening in real life. Such a person may be called a “daydreamer”.

The person who is down to earth usually has both feet on the ground. But the opposite is not always true. Someone with both feet on the ground may not be as open and easy to deal with as someone who is down to earth.

When we have both our feet firmly on the ground, and when we are down to earth we do not hold our noses in the air. We act honestly and openly to others. Our lives are like the ground below us solid —and strong.

I am a girl who doesn’t look like the rest of my family. When people see us together, it is clear that I am adopted(收养). I am happy to have such a loving and caring family, but sometimes I wish I knew who my birth parents are.

My friends and teachers often ask,“Are you sad that you don’t know your real parents?”I know that they are just curious and care for me—I’m fine, for the most part—but I feel like there’s something missing in my life, like a big hole in my heart. My mother listens when I tell her about my feelings, and she feels that it is important for me to be in touch with my culture. Because of this, through my teacher’s recommendation, she and I go to Chinese Heritage Camp each year in Snow Mountain Ranch.

Chinese Heritage Camp is a two-day camp where hundreds of adopted kids like me spend time with each other. We talk about how it feels to be adopted, and we participate in fun outdoor activities. It’s great because we can talk about our feelings without having the conversation get too nervous. It makes me feel like I am not alone, and that there is someone out there going through the exact same feelings.

Whether we’re talking, laughing, crying, or dancing, Chinese Heritage Camp is always an experience to remember.

Chinese Heritage Camp has changed the way I look at things. Now when people ask me,“Are you sad you don’t know your real parents?”I can safely answer,“Maybe I don’t know who my birth parents are, and that makes me a little sad. But I do know that I live with my real parents in a real house, with a real family, and I love my life just the way it is.”

6. It can be inferred from Paragraphs I and 2 that the author_______.

A. doesn’t like her present family

B. is probably adopted from China

C. is adopted by a teacher

D. has never been to Chinese Heritage Camp

7. Who takes the author to Chinese Heritage Camp each year?

A. Her friend.

B. Her teacher.

C. Her mother.

D. The leader of the Camp.

8. In Chinese Heritage Camp, the author does the following things EXCEPT_______.

A. seeing her real parents

B. meeting hundreds of other adopted kids

C. taking part in outdoor activities

D. sharing her feelings with other kids

9. After participating in Chinese Heritage Camp, the author_________.

A. gave up the try to look for her real parents

B. became disappointed about life

C. changed the way she looked at the world around her

D. felt happy because she found her real parents

10. In this passage, the author mainly tells us_______.

A. her thanks to her adoptive parents

B. her thought of her real parents

C. her sad feelings about life in a new family

D. the Chinese Heritage Camp’s effect on her

C

Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins“Twinkle, twinkle, little star”or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be started as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials(尝试)increase the length of time we will remember it.

In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as“Twinkle, twinkle, little star”and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.

The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.

The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost eyerything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one’s future development.

11. What is the main idea of Paragraph 1 ?

A. People remember well what they learned in childhood.

B. Children have a better memory than grown-ups.

C. Poem reading is a good way to learn words.

D. Stories for children are easy to remember.

12. The author explains the law of overlearning by_____.

A. presenting research findings

B. setting down general rules

C. making a comparison

D. using examples

13. According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is_______.

A. a result of overlearning

B. a special case of cramming

C. a skill to deal with math problems

D. a basic step towards advanced studies

14. What does the word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A. Commonly accepted rules.

B. The multiplication tables.

C. Things easily forgotten.

D. School subjects.

15. What is the author’s opinion on cramming?

A. It leads to failure in college exams.

B. It’s helpful only in a limited way.

C. It’s possible to result in poor memory.

D. It increases students’ learning interest.

Some kids need to repeat a grade in school. 36 Repeating a grade can give you another chance to complete the work and learn what you need to know to do well when you do move up to the next grade.

Some kids need to repeat a grade because they are having trouble with the work or other stuff they need to do in that grade. 37 for instance, a kid might have trouble reading. Other kids might have been ill or absent for a long time, so they didn’t get a chance to learn everything they needed to learn. Sometimes a kid might understand the schoolwork, but is having trouble with other stuff, like behaving in class and sitting still while the teacher is teaching. 38 Repeating a grade might make you sad, angry, or both. 39 You might be upset because you won’t be in class with all of your friends. Try to talk with your mon or dad, or a teacher if you’re having these feelings. If you are worried about missing your friends, try to set up other time when you can play together. You might feel embarrassed about repeating a grade. You may think that people are talking about you or making fun of you. 40 It can really hurt if someone teases you about repeating a grade. Making a good first impression on your teacher is an important part of having a good school year. 41 Here are five tips for you.

Introduce yourself at the first opportunity. Try to find something you both have in common. Talk to him or her for a minute or so if you want to. This shows that you aren’t afraid of strangers.

42 Most teachers like a student with a lot of confidence.

Be obedient(听话的), especially for the first few weeks of school. Always put up your hand before speaking. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you don’t understand something. This shows that you want to do well in school. 43 It is good to ask questions, but in other times you should use a textbook or other reference to help you. You could always ask another student, although it isn’t encouraged as much.

Do not play any jokes on your teachers. You may think it’s a good way to break the ice. 44 Your jokes will cause the student-teacher relationship to have a rocky start.

45 If you do so, you’ll get good marks on your first test. Maintaining your grades

throughout the whole year is a must. Sometimes teachers will give you studying techniques if you

So his skill and his beautiful trees were famous everywhere. One day the farmer went into the town to visit his brother, and was surprised at the trees that grew quite well. "Look, my brother," said the gardener. "I will give you an apple tree, the best from my garden, and you, and your children, and your children's children will enjoy it." Then the gardener called his workmen and ordered them to take up the tree and carry it to his brother's farm. They did so, and the next morning the farmer began to wonder where he should plant it. "If I plant it on the hill," he said to himself, "the wind might catch it and shake down the delicious fruit before it is ripe. If I plant it close to the road, passersby will see it and take away the apples--but if I plant it too near the door of my house, my children may pick the fruit." So, after he had thought the matter over, he planted the tree behind his barn (谷仓). Time passed, but the tree had no fruit the first year, nor the second-then the farmer called his brother. When the gardener came, the farmer said angrily, "You have cheated me, and given me a useless tree instead of a fruitful one. This is the third year and still it brings out nothing but leaves!

抓住四个"W"和一个"H",就是边读边用铅笔做些标记,把What (事件),When (时间),Where(地点),Why(原因),How(经过)划出来。
