2 We told my 8-year-old daughter recently that she has dyslexia. It felt like the right time to put

a name to her struggle. Another child in the class had recently laughed at Viv when she tried to read out loud, and we had noticed that she was beginning to get down on herself because she

co uldn’t read beyond the easiest of early reader books.

I had armed myself with information about dyslexia, yet I didn’t rehearse(排练)the talk. Maybe I should have. When we told her that her brain works a little differently than her classmates’ brains, sh e reacted with a kind of refusal at first, saying she’s been keeping up with her peers. Then she went to our bedroom and cried for 15 minutes under the covers.

I was upset and wondered if we had made the wrong decision. Was there a different way to des cribe dyslexia? Perhaps we should have better shared one of the success stories we’ve heard? But what does an 8-year-old know or care about Henry Winkler or Jay Leno, all of whom have dyslexia?

I had purchased three books about dyslexia, but I was unhappy with them — one was too medical; one was too old for her; and one was a picture book. Without thinking, I read aloud the medical book. After reading I knew I was making a mistake. My daughter burst in tears. “I’m dumb,” she cried. “I’ll never learn to read.” All I could do was to hold her weeping.

The next day Viv brought home a big red picture book by Oliver Jeffers, “A Child of Books.” Ms. Emily had chosen it for her, and as we read it out loud that afternoon, I understood why. In it some words ar e written “The dyslexia come from a world of stories and upon rich imagination they float.”

In the summer, a reading specialist came to help Viv learn to read. I listened from the kitchen with a bright smile appearing on my face as Viv worked her way through words-spelling in early reader.

1.The person who has dyslexia always has difficulty in _______.

A.reading and spelling

B.listening and writing

C.reading and writing

D.spelling and speaking

2.Why did Ms. Emily choose the book written by Oliver Jeffers for Viv ?

A.Because the book was so interesting.

B.Because the book was so simple that Viv can read it easily.

C.Because the book encouraged Viv to enjoy stories with her imagination.

D.Because the book instructed Viv how to read books.

3.What does the last paragraph imply ?

A.The little girl will cooperate with the specialist

B.The specialist will cure Viv of dyslexia.

C.The specialist will visit her frequently.

D.The little girl will improve herself gradually.

4.What conclusion can we draw from the passage ?

A.It’s sensible to make Viv herself know what the dyslexia is.

B.Viv didn’t realize her problems in reading at the beginning.

C.Henry Winkler and Jay Leno inspire Viv to overcome the dyslexia.

D.The mother was not well concerned of the dyslexia.

3 As I walked into the primary school, I looked down at my new black Mary Jane shoes—I wanted to be anywhere in the world but Fountain Inn Elementary School.

I stood at Mrs. Blackstone’s door. Before I tried the great escape, the wooden door suddenly opened to the loud voice of Mrs. Blackstone, my new fifth grade teacher.

“We’ve been waiting for you!” She said loudly. With a smile my mom walked away and I was left standing in front of a group of students.

Over the next few days, Mrs. Blackstone made it her job to find me a new best friend. During history lessons, when I didn’t want to speak in front of the class, she’d not only call on me but have me stand up to address my classmates.

One spring afternoon, Mrs. Blackstone asked me to stay after class.

“I’d like to speak with you, Amanda.”

My mind raced. Had I made a bad grade? Had I hurt someone’s feelings?

“Are you enjoying your new school?” She sat comfortably behind her desk.

“I want to tell you something, between you and me, not to be shared with anyone else.” With her eyebrows raised she continued, “I see something special in you. The way you communicate with others, the kindness you show—I think you have great potential to be something very important.”

I listened attentively to every word.

“I’ve been a teacher for over twenty-five years; I can see it. But you must believe in yourself. That’s very important.Remember that and you’ll go far.”

She then hugged me and said, “See you tomorrow.”

Her singsong voice was music to my ears that day. I walked out of her class, not staring at my Mary Jane shoes, but looking straight ahead with my head high. My teacher saw something special in me!

4. To save as much language diversity as possible in the face of its rapidly dying out, researchers suggest using “evolutionary trees”, a tool from c onservation biology.

One of the world’s 7,000 languages disappears every other week, and half might not survive the 21st century, experts say.

When setting conservation goals, ecologists use evolutionary trees—diagrams that show how biological species are related to one another—to identify species that have few close relatives. Such species are said to be evolutionarily distinct. Similarly, recent advances in the construction of language trees make it possible to measure how unique a language is.

“Evolutionary trees have transformed our understanding of how life has evolved and helped us to decide which species most need conserving,” says Jonathan Davies, senior author of the new study.

“The rapid rate of language loss, as well as limited res ources for preservation(保护), means that we must choose carefully where to focus our efforts,” adds Max Farrell, a PhD student in Davies’ lab. “The more isolated (孤立的) a language in its family tree, the more unique information it contains and eventually con tributes to language diversity.”

As a case study, they used this approach to rank 350 Austronesian languages, spoken in islands spread across Southeast Asia and the Pacific Ocean.

For each of these languages, the researchers combined measures of evolutionary distinctiveness (ED) and global endangerment (GE) to produce an “EDGE” score. The language with the highest score, which means it is extremely distinct(不同的) yet nearly dying out, was Kavalan, a language native to Tai Wan. The next-highest scores went to Tanibili, an endangered language in theSolomon Islands.

By building trees for other language groups, language specialists could target preservation efforts and help reduce the loss of language diversity in the future, the researchers say.

1.What can an evolutionary tree show in biology?

A.The relation among species.

B.The concept of each species.

C.The conservation measures of each species.

D.The different uses of different species.

2.Why do researchers build language trees?

A.To increase the variety of languages.

B.To make languages easier for new learners.

C.To aim their effort at endangered languages.

D.To choose the best way to study languages.

3.What does it mean if a language gets the highest EDGE score?

A.It is unique to a special area.

B.It is widely used in the world.

C.It is similar to other languages.

D.It is in danger of dying out.

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A.Evolutionary Trees, Symbols of Languages

B.Evolutionary Trees, Tools to Record Species

C.To Save Dying Languages, Use Evolutionary Trees

D.To Show Language Diversity, Choose Evolutionary Trees

二、七选五

5.根据短文内容,从短文的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Cleaning is a delicate subject for all of us -- I seldom met a person who likes to clean the house. Cleaning is a chore which most of us delay as much as possible. Even if you do know that a clean house has a lot of benefits for your wellness, from making you happier, more likely to exercise to giving you a sense of accomplishment, cleaning remains one of the most unpleasant tasks.

① __________

1. 1. Learn to let go This is the most important lesson I found when I last cleaned my

house: Let go! Remember how stylists say that if you have never worn certain clothing in the past year, just let it go? Well, the same goes for dealing with relationships in your

life. ②__________. If a relationship fails to bring you joy, just let it go. But …

2. 2. Do hold onto really important things As important as it is to let go, hold on to things

which bring you joy and beautify your life. If your old pair of sneakers is still making you feel like you can conquer the world, keep them, even if you don't actually wear them

outside. ③__________. If they fill your heart with joy, keep them! That brings me to the next point.④__________

3.When it's cleaning time, you can find out what really matters to you. You will be

amazed to discover some small things that mean a lot to you. When you start cleaning the desk or the drawers, you will stumble upon lots of small decorative objects. In my case, I found how much a small piece of paper meant, when I wanted to throw away something

that turned out to be a treasured map. A long time ago, this small map of Dublin was the

only memory I had of a dear friend I met in Dublin. The map always reminded me of

time I spent in Dublin with my dear friend So, instead of throwing it away, I framed it and displayed it on my desk. The lesson of the day: sometimes small things matter the most.

4. 3. Everyone Hides a Mess

5.When you finally get serious about your cleaning, you will discover plenty of places

you haven't cleaned in ages. Everyone has some kind of hidden mess. And that mess is

not only behind the stove, it can be something that causes communication problems

between you and your partner. ⑤__________. It can even be that dirty secret which

leads to your divorce. It's normal to have hidden messes in your life, but one day you

need to deal with them. The sooner, the better. Take your courage and scrub all the dirt

from your life.

6. 4. Never give up

7.Cleaning might be hard and unpleasant, but never give up. This is probably the most

important lesson you can learn from it. No matter how hard it is, the most important in

life is to keep going. Push yourself one more step ahead and you will achieve your goal.

8. A. Sometimes small things are the most important.

9. B. It can be the reason you don't speak with your parents anymore.

10.C. But when you do dive into cleaning head first, you can learn a lot of life lessons.

11.D. Do not get troubled on small things.

12.E. The same goes for people and relationships in your life.

13.F. Partners help a lot in solving such problems.

14.G. As I was giving away my old skirts and never-worn pants from my last year in college,

I realized I had to let go of some people in my life too.

参考答案

一、阅读理解

答案:1.A; 2.D; 3.C

The challenge invites, even dares school students between the ages of 5—14 to create artwork or a piece of writing that shows their curiosity。可知是5—14岁的学生可以参加比赛。故选A。

2.考查细节理解。颁奖仪式什么时间举行?根据Students who enter the Cambridge Challenge and are selected as winners will be honorned at a special ceremony during the CSF on Sunday, April 21st.可知颁奖仪式在4月21日星期天举行,故选D。

3.考查判断推理。这篇是属于什么体裁的文章?根据短文的内容及The program guidelines and other related information are available at:https://www.360docs.net/doc/886054922.html,. The Cambridge Science Festival (CSF) is pleased to inform you of the sixth annual Curiosity Challenge.可知这里是剑桥科技节的名誉写的通知,而并非官方,故排除D。

【长难句分析】Students who enter the Curiosity Challenge and are selected as winners will be honored at a special ceremony during the CSF on Sunday,April 21st参加好奇心挑战并当选获胜者的学生将在四月二十一日(周日)的科技节期间的特别仪式上受到表扬。该句为复合句。句中who引导定语从句修饰主干句主语Students,从句中含有and连接的两部分谓语;主干句谓语是将来时的被动语态结构。

人教版高中英语选修6各单元课文原文

选修6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.

高中英语选修6 Unit 1 A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones. Starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages(5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artistof this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created a feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance(15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values gradually replaced those held in the Middle Ages. People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life.At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess their own paintings, so they coule decorate their superb palaces and great houses. If the rules of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new

But I quickly found myself facing the same roadblocks that had caused me to quit before: I was confused with college-level algebra and a heavy workload of reading and writing assignment. Moreover, I was unsure of my career direction. I was ready to drop out again. Then a smartly-dressed woman walked confidently to the front of my English composition class. “Look at you! Look at each and every one of you,” she said. “You’re here to change your lives for the better. And you’re going to make it!” I can’t remember the rest of the speech, but it changed the course of my college career and my life. Mrs. Smith didn’t know me from any of the other 40 faces in her classroom, but I felt she speaking directly to me. Having trouble keeping up with the workload? Break it down into small pieces, and set up a schedule that suits you. If college algebra is too difficult, drop back to introductory college math. As for English composit ion, she gave us writing assignments we could relate to. “Go for the best, kid. You’re worth it,” she’d say. I graduated from that college and went on to get my bachelor’s degrees. Today, as a college instructor, each fall when I stand in front of a new class, I think of Mrs. Smith and how much teachers can affect their students. She couldn’t have known it when she gave that pep talk, but she made a huge difference in my life. 4. Why did the author want to quit school again? A. He wanted to return to hid former job. B.
