A

Some places in the world have strange laws. It’s important for you to know about them before going there.

Whoever likes to chew gum may have to leave Singapore. The government

really wants to keep the city clean and will fine you for chewing gum.

Before you leave for the United Arab Emirates you’d better make sure you aren’t visiting during Ramadan (斋月). During that time you aren’t allowed to eat or drink in public. Tourists have been fined up to $275 for drinking in public.

Lovers spend so much time kissing each other goodbye at train stations that trains often start late. This law---no kissing your lover goodbye at train stations---is rather old, and isn’t in use today in France.

In Thailand it’s against the law to drive a car or motorcycle without a shirt on, no matter how hot it is. Punishments are different in different areas and can include warnings and tickets costing about $10. No joke! The local police will stop you.

Studies in Denmark have shown that cars with their headlights on are more noticeable by other drivers than those with their headlights off. Drivers there are required to leave their headlights on even during the day, or they may face a fine up to $100.

Do you often buy things using coins? D on’t do it in Canada. The Currency Law of 1985 doesn’t allow using only coins to buy things. Even the use of the dollar-coin is limited. The shop owner has the right to choose whether to take your coins or not.

Make sure you know about these laws before your next trip. Better safe than sorry.

21. What is mainly talked about in the text?

A. How to make your trip around the world safe.

B. Some strange laws you should know about for your trip.

C. Interesting places you can go to around the world.

D. Why there are strange laws in the world.

22. If you are driving a car in Thailand, ________.

A. the police will play a joke on you

B. the police will give you tickets costing about $10

C. you should wear your shirt even though it’s hot

D. you should always keep your headlights on

23. What can we learn from the text?

A. You can turn your headlights off in daytime in Denmark.

B. Kissing goodbye at train stations isn’t allowed in France today.

C. Tourists in the United Arab Emirates shouldn’t eat in public.

D. The Singaporean government cares a lot about its environment.

What’s the meaning of “dark horse”? It’s someone who wins when no one expects it.

Han Xiaopeng took China’s first gold on snow. He became an Olympic “dark horse” by winning the gold medal in men’s free style aerial skiing(自由式滑雪空中技巧) at Turin in Italy. He made two almost perfect jumps for the highest score. Han had never won a world gold medal before, let alone in the Olympics!

“I never thought this would happen,” said the 23-year-old. “I feel like I’m in a dream.” It’s China’s second gold medal at the Turin Olympics. But more important, Han’s gold was the country’s first ever in a snow sport. In 2002, China’s Yang Yang won the gold for speed skating at the winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, US.

That Han’s win was unexpected doesn’t mean that he didn’t work hard.

Han grew up in Jiangsu Province. Before he started his training on snow, he used to be an acrobat(杂技演员) at a circus. In 1995, a coach found his talent. The coach, Yang Er’qi, said Han had the agility(灵活性) and courage

to be a ski jumper. When Yang first took the 12-year-old to northern China, the boy couldn’t swim, skate or ski. But he wasn’t afraid of the high platform and kept on training.

Han almost left the sport after hurting his knee months before the Salt Lake Games. In that Olympics he only got 24th. “I was hopeless at that time, but my family and the coach stood firmly behind me, helping me through,” he recalled.

Han Xiaopeng worked so hard that he won the gold medal in the Olympics at last. Because of his success, more and more people in China are becoming interested in skiing. We are proud of him and we hope he will have another big success in the next winter Olympics.

24. What does “dark horse” mean?

A. A horse which is dark.

B. A someone who is unexpected to win.

C. A horse which likes the dark.

D. A someone whose win is expected.

25. Where did Han Xiaopeng take China’s first gold on snow?

A. In China.

B. In Italy.

C. In America.

D. In Australia.

26. What made the coach, Yang Er’qi, choose Han Xiaopeng to be a ski jumper?

A. He had enough courage though he was only 12 years old.

B. He was born in the south of China and liked sports on snow.

C. He had the agility and wasn’t afraid of the high platform.

D. He had the talent and he had won a world gold medal before.

27. What is the best title for this passage?

A. A Wonderful Match.

B. A Dark Horse at the Winter Olympics.

C. A Hopeful Snow Game.

D. An Exciting Skiing Race.

Having friends may well keep you healthier and help you deal with stress better. Some studies show that people with close friends have a greater ability to fight disease than people who are alone.

Place friendship in the first place. Find the time to be with friends even if it means letting the lawn go unmowed(未割的) or the dishes unwashed for a while. When you can’t get together, use the phone to keep in touch.

Open up to close friends. Keeping a deep friendship requires a level of “heartfelt” intimacy. Don’t be afraid to express your inner fears and disappointments. Listen to your friends when they have problems, but offer advice only when it’s wanted. Help raise friends’ self-esteem when they are sad about a job loss, or other such events.

Have different friends for different activities, such as going to the movies, singing in a choir, and joining in a bowling league.

Don’t wait for a friend to ask for helps. When a friend has the flu, offer to go to the store or drive his or her children to their after-school activities.

Never take a friendship for granted. Like a good marriage, friendship needs care and patience. Become a joiner. Find a group that matches your interests.

Talk to strangers. Conversations started in museums, laundry rooms, or bookstores can lead to firm friendship.

Enroll in an adult education course. A classroom is an ideal place to meet others with similar interests.

28. People who are alone have a ability to fight disease than people with close friends.

D

At your next meeting, wait for a pause in conversation and try to measure how long it lasts.

Among English speakers, chances are that it will be a second or two at most. But while this pattern may be universal, our awareness of silence differs dramatically across cultures.

What one culture considers a confusing or awkward pause may be seen by others as a valuable moment of reflection and sign of respect for what the last speaker has said. Research in Dutch and also in English found that when a silence in conversation stretches to four seconds, people start to feel uneasy. In contrast, a separate study of business meetings found that Japanese people are happy with silences of 8.2 seconds — nearly twice as long as in Americans’ meetings.

In Japan, it is recognized that the best communication is when you don’t

speak at all. It’s already a failure to understand each other by speaking because you’re repairing that failure by using words.

In the US, it may originate from the history of colonial (殖民地) America as a crossroads of many different races. When you have a complex of difference, it’s hard to establish common understanding unless you talk and there’s understandably a kind of anxiety unless people are verbally engaged to establish a common life. This applies also to some extent to London.

In contrast, when there’s more homogeneity, perhaps it’s easier for some kinds of silence to appear. For example, among your closest friends and family it’s easier to sit in silence than with people you’re less well acquainted with.

32. Which of the following people might have the longest silence in conversation?

A. The Dutch.

B. Americans.

C. The English.

D. The Japanese.

33. What might the Japanese agree with in a conversation?

A. Speaking more gives the upper hand.

B. Speak out what you have in your mind.

C. Great minds think alike without words.

D. The shorter talking silence, the better.

34. What can we learn from the text?

A. A four second silence in conversation is universal.

B. It’s hard for Americans to reach a common agreement.

C. English speakers are more talkative than Japanese speakers.

D. The closer we and our family are, the easier the silence appears.

35. What does the underlined word “homogeneity” in the last paragraph mean?

A. Similarity.

B. Contradiction.

C. Diversity.

D.

Misunderstanding.

2020届安徽省六安市舒城中学高考仿真模拟(一) 语文试题 学校_________ 班级__________ 姓名__________ 学号__________ 一、现代文阅读 1.

安徽省六安市舒城中学2018届高三仿真(一)语文 试题 学校_________ 班级__________ 姓名__________ 学号__________ 一、现代文阅读 1.
