It’s never too early for you to develop your child’s interests. Now, read the follow ing and see what you can do.

Discover As a parent, you should play an active role in developing your children’s interests. Take them to museums, art galleries, zoos and even to theaters when they are young. Take them to take part in as many activities as possible.

Show them what you’re interested in. This can help them to discover if they are interested in those things, too. Have them sit with you while you watch a sporting event, or have them help you cook dinner. If possible, take them to work with you and show them what you do. They might want to follow in your footsteps!

▲ Perhaps the most important thing you can do is encourage your children. Pay attention to what they like to do or try. Encourage them to write down goals. Then, go over the list with them and help them achieve these goals. For older kids, encourage them to find a summer job that interests them. Also, encourage them to volunteer to do something.

Dream Let your kids dream. Maybe they have a love of acting and see themselves as movie stars. Although this might be unlikely (不大可能发生的), always be on their side. It’s true

that one’s dream changes. It doesn’t matter. Finding out what they don’t want to do is as important as finding out what they want to do.

But no matter what their life goals are and how many times those goals change, always encourage them to do well in school and make time for their interests.

Do you know the story how Christopher Columbus came to America by mistake? Columbus was so sure that the earth was round, not flat and that he would reach the Far East by sailing towards the west. As we know, Columbus’s journey led him to islands in the Caribbean (加勒比海地区), not to the East Indies near Asia. However, it was some time before Columbus believed that he and his team reached the ground in a ―new world‖ and not on an island off the coast of Japan or China.

Columbus was not the only European explorer whose discoveries happened by accident. John Cabot first came to North America to find a short way that would allow British ships to reach China and India. Others made journeys for more unusual reasons. For example, the Spanish (西班牙的) explorer Juan Ponce de Leon was looking for the ―fountain of youth‖ that would turn old men into boys according to the Indians. But he found a beautiful coast in 1513, thinking that he had discovered a large island. He named it Florida, which in Spanish means ―full of flowers‖.

Francisco Coronado, who was also Spanish, was disappointed by what he found. He was told that seven cities in North America were filled with gold, silver and precious stones, so he went there. For years, Coronado’s team searched the mountains and deserts witho ut success. Coronado never found treasure, but his team did find the Grand Canyon, one of the most beautiful wonders of the world.

( )28. The explorers mentioned above were all from ________.

A. Asia

B. Africa

C. Europe

D. America

( )29. According to the passage, we learn that Christopher Columbus ________.

B. one of the most beautiful wonders

C. treasure found by Francisco Coronado

D. geographical (地理的) discoveries by accident

Jim Dougherty from Washington D.C. is fighting for darker skies. He and others want to turn off the lights in the city. They believe a darker night sky is good for people’s health and our planet.

The earth appears to shine from space. What astronauts see as they travel around the earth are the lights from our cities. The lights create a kind of orange cloud that keeps us from seeing the stars. Jim says the orange cloud is light pollution. ―Light pollution is outdoor lighting that’s not serving the task that it’s designed for.‖

Jim went to a neighborhood called Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. There street lights shine in all directions. He says too much light is being produced. However, most people who live there disagree. One person says, ―I often take a walk after dinner. Street lights make me feel safe, and I

can see all around me. I know no one is going to hurt me.‖ Jim says he understands that the government wants to make the sidewalks safe. But he says the city has set up twice the number of street lights than necessary. And he says the lights send light into the sky where it is not needed.

The good news is that in some communities, people are taking action to stop wasteful spending and protect public health. When you walk into a park or drive your car down a street, the lights come on because they have motion sensors (运动传感器). The lights turn on when there is someone coming and then turn off if they go away. The sensors can reduce lighting by 90 percent. Jim hopes more communities will use energy-saving devices (设备) like those.

( )32. The street lights in Capitol Hill make people in the neighborhood ________.

A. become lazy

B. get mad

C. feel safe

D. look ugly

( )33. The sentence ―the lights send light into the sky where it is not needed‖ means ―_______‖.

A. the sky is bright

B. there aren’t enough lights

C. the lights look beautiful

D. the lights are not designed well

( )34. How do motion sensors work according to the passage?

A. By clearing the streets.

B. By discovering motion.

C. By collecting light.

D. By remembering the way.

( )35. In which column (专栏) of a newspaper would you most probably find the passage?

A. TRAVEL.

B. EDUCATION.

C. SPORTS.

D. ENVIRONMENT.

四、任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)

请阅读下面短文,在短文后表格中的空白处填上适当的单词(注意:每空1个单词)。

Recycled paper, cloth and other things can become pretty pictures and sculptures (雕像). An artist near Washington, D.C. just had her recycled artworks on show at the Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Centre in Maryland. She used a common material—plastic bags.

Plastic bags are not expensive to produce. They are also easy to carry. This is why they are popular.

But they are also a main cause of pollution. It takes hundreds of years for plastic bags to break down (分解).

So, environmental experts (专家) ask people to recycle plastic bags.

Maryland artist Allita Irby just does that. It starts with the morning newspaper. Three years ago Irby found the plastic bag the paper came in was soft. An idea appeared in her mind, ―Why not use it in the artworks?‖

Before using plastic bags in her works, Irby used natural materials, such as feathers and dried plants.

Irby’s neighbours agree on turning rubbish into treasure. Neighbour Aleta Meyer expressed surprise. ―I’ve never given any more thought to what to do with a plastic bag. This is certainly different.‖
