Nothing could stop Dad. After he was put on disability for a bad back, he bought a small farm in the country, just enough to grow food for the family. He planted vegetables, fruit trees and even kept bees for hone y.

And every week he cleaned Old Man McColgin's chicken house in exchange for manure(肥料).

The smell really burned the inside of your nose. When we complained about the terrible smell, Dad said the stronger the manure, the healthier the crops, and he was right. For example, just one of his cantaloupes filled the entire house with its sweet smell, and the taste was even sweeter.

As the vegetables started com ing in, Dad threw himself into cooking. One day, armed with a basket of vegetables, he announced he was going to make stew(炖菜).Dad pulled out a pressure cooker and filled it up with cabbages, eggplants, potatoes, corns, onions and carrots. For about half an hour, the pressure built and the vegetables cooked. Finally, Dad turned off the stove, the pot began to cool and the pressure relief valve sprayed out a cloud of steam. If we thought Dad's pile of chicken manure was bad, this was 10 times worse. When Dad took off the lid, the smell nearly knocked us out.

Dad carried the pot out and we opened doors and windows to air out the house. Just how bad was it? The neighbors came out of their houses to see if we had a gas leak!

Determined, Dad filled our plates with steaming stew and passed them around. I t didn’t look that bad, and after the first wave had shut down my ability to smell, it didn’t offend the nose so much, either. I took a taste. It would never win a prize in a cooking competition, but it was surprisingly edible, and we drank up every last drop of soup!

25.Why did Dad clean Old Man Mocolgin’s chicken house regularly?

A. To earn some money for the family.

B. To collect manure for his crops.

C. To get rid of the terrible smell.

D. To set a good example to us.

26.What can we infer about Dad’s stew?

A. It is popular among the ne i ghbors.

B. It contains honey and vegetables.

C. It looks very wonderful.

D. It tastes q uite delicious.

27.Wh at does the underlined word “offend” in the last paragraph mean?

A. To attract.

B. To upset.

C. To air.

D. To shut.

28.What can we learn about Dad form the text?

A. He is an experienced cook.

B. He is a troublesome father.

C. He has a positive attitude to life.

D. He suffers a lot from his disability.

C

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track your performance on your phone.

The olibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection.

The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.

The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications on your phone, so developers could, for instance, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun,” Several says.

Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes,” but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.

The company says the olibree will go on sale this summer, for $99 to $199, developing on features. The U.S. is the first target market.

Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.

29.Which is one of the features of the olibree toothbrush?

A. It can sense how users brush their teeth.

B. It can track users’ school performance.

C. It can detect users’ fear of seeing a dentist.

D. It can help users find their phones.

30.What can we learn from Serval’s words in Paragraph 3?

A. You will find it enjoyable to see a dentist.

B. You should see your dentist on a day-to-day basis.

C. You can brush with the olibree as if guided by a dentist.

D. You’d like a dentist to watch you brush your teeth every day.

31.What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?

A. How Serval found out his kids lied to him.

B. Why Serval thought brushing teeth was necessary.

C. How Serval taught his kids to brush their teeth.

D. What inspired Serval to invent the toothbrush.

32.What can we infer about Serval’s children?

A. They were unwilling to brush their teeth

B. They often failed to clean their toothbrushes.

C. They preferred to use a toothbrush with a dry head.

D. They liked brushing their teeth after Serval came home.

D

Perhaps you think you could easily add to your happiness with more money. Strange as it may seem, if you're unsatisfied, the issue is not a lack of means to meet your desires but a lack of desires—not that you cannot satisfy your tastes but that you don't have enough tastes.

Real riches consist of well-developed and hearty capacities (能力) to enjoy life. Most people are already swamped(淹没) with things. They eat, wear, go and talk too much. They liv e in too big a house with too many rooms, yet their house of life is a hut.

Your house of life ought to be a mansion (豪宅) , a royal palace. Every new taste, every

additional interest, every fresh enthusiasm adds a room. Here are several rooms your house of life should have.

Art should be a desire for you to develop simply because the world is full of beautiful things. If you only understood how to enjoy them and feed your spirit on them, they would make you as happy as to find plenty of ham and eggs when you're hungry.

Literature, classic literature, is a beautiful, richly furnished room where you might find many an hour of rest and refreshment. To gain that love would go toward making you a rich person, for a rich person is not someone who has a library but who likes a library.

Music like Mozart's and Bach's shouldn't be absent. Real riches are of the spirit. And when you've brought that spirit up to where classical music feeds it and makes you a little drunk, you have increased your thrills and bettered them. And life is a matter of thrills.

Sports, without which you remain poor, mean a lot in life. No matter who you are, you would be more human, and your house of life would be better supported against the bad days, if you could, and did, play a bit.

Whatever rooms you might add to your house of life, the secret of enjoying life is to keep adding.

33.The author intends to tell us that ________.

A. true happiness lies in achieving wealth by fair means

B. big houses are people's most valued possessions

C. big houses can in a sense bring richness of life

D. true happiness comes from spiritual riches

34.The underlined sentence in the second paragraph probably implies that ________.

A. however materially rich, they never seem to be satisfied

B. however materially rich, they remain spiritually poor

C. though their house is big, they prefer a simple life

D. though their house is big, it seems to be a cage

35.What would be the best title for the passage?

A. House of Life

B. Secret of Wealth

C. Rest and Refreshment

D. Interest and Enthusiasm

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Do’s and Don’ts of Donating

Giving up your unused or unwanted stuff is a great way to make space in your home for the items that you do enjoy on a regular basis. Not sure where to start? Here are some do’s and don’ts of donating your belongings.

Do Prepare Your Clothes

You’ve thoroughly cleaned out your closet and drawers, and have a mountain of clothing waiting to be donated. 36 Make sure all buttons are accounted for, and that you can’t

see any dirty marks, or damage.

● 37

The number one rule of donating your stuff is to make sure that it’s in good, usable condition. Don’t pass along old clothes or furniture, chipped dishes, books that are missing pages, or toys with lost pieces. Nobody wants to accept your damaged belongings. Find a local company that will recycle these items instead.

●Don’t even think of donating these items

With a little common sense it’s easy to figure out items that are ideal for donations. 38 As a gentle reminder, it’s never a good idea to donate car parts, dangerous waste, construction materials and weapons.

●Don’t donate large appliances

Major appliances such as stoves, fridges, freezers, washers and dryers typically reside on the ‘do not donate’ list due to health and safety reasons. All items accepted for donation must be thoroughly clean and in good working order. With secondhand appliances, it can be difficult to guarantee that they fit the bill. 39

●Don’t donate recalled items

Every so often a product recall hits the news headlines. Highchairs, toys, holiday lights for Christmas trees—the list of recalled items due to safety concerns is endless. 40 A dangerous product should be thrown away, and not passed on to an unsuspecting person. Think of the well being of others before dropping off someth ing that’s viewed as a hidden danger in your own home.

A.They’re all acceptable items for donation, too.

B.Instead of donating an unwanted large appliance, call your local trash collection company

and arrange for their safe disposal.

C.But unfortunately some people will t hrow away the contents of their home without a second

thought.

D.Before you bag up these pieces, inspect each one to ensure that they’re in good condition

and ready to be owned by someone else..

E.Don’t donate dam aged items.

F.Clothes aren’t the only household items that can be donated.

G.Never donate recalled items!

作文:

Dear editor,

I am a senior high school student, named hang Meng. Nowadays, it’s fashionable for young students to have iPads. Using an iPad, we can listen to music, download a lot of learning materials and read them. Obviously, it’s of great help with our studies, especially with our English listening skills.

Some students, however, bring their iPads to the classroom listening to music with earphones, and some playing video games, which makes teachers and students greatly annoyed.

In my opinion, the classroom is a place for studying, and concentration is terribly needed. Therefore, we should make good use of iPads and other modern communication tools to help with our lessons.

Meanwhile, schools should make some rules to instruct the students to use iPads properly.

Yours sincerely,

hang Meng

Many years ago,I worked in a piano company. We sold pianos by advertising in small town newspapers and then, when we had received replies,we would sell the pianos to those who had replied. Every time we would receive a reply from Memphis on a postcard which said,“Please bring me a new piano for my little granddaughter. I can pay $10 a month with my egg money.”Of course,we could not sell a new piano for $ 10 a month. So we ignored her postcards.

One clay, however, out of curiosity I decided to visit the old lady. I found pretty much what I expected

The old lady lived in a cabin with chickens in the house. I could see daylight through roof in several places. Her little granddaughter was about 10,barefoot. I told her we could not sell a piano to her and that she should stop writing. I drove away, heartsick, but my advice had no effect-she still sent us postcard.

A couple of years later, I owned my own piano company, and when I advertised in that area, the postcards started coming to me. For months,I ignored them. But then, one clay, despite knowing that I was about to make a terrible business decision,I delivered a piano to her and told her I would sell her the piano at $ 10 a month with no interests, and that would mean 52 payments. I placed the new piano where I thought the roof would be least likely to rain on it. I was sure I had just thrown away a new piano. But the payments came in,all of them were coins.

20 years later, then one clay I was at a bar in Memphis. A lovely young woman playing a very nice piano there. I was stunned by her virtuosity(精湛技艺),and I moved to a table beside her. During her break she sat down at my table.“Aren't you the man who sold my grandma a piano a long time agog”It didn't ring a bell,so I asked her to explain. Suddenly,I remembered.

It was the little barefoot girl! She told me her name was Elise and since her grandmother couldn't afford to pay for lessons, she had learned to play by listening to the radio. She had started to play in church, then played in school, and won many awards and a music scholarship. And then she married and lived happily.

My throat tightened. Finally,I found my voice. I said“I'm proud of you,but I have to

go to my room.”And so I did, because men didn't like to be seen crying in public.

Are you addicted to computer games? Do you stay up all night playing theme Do you feel

happy after you play computer games

There's no doubt that the excitement and appealing of games these days makes them hard to put clown. We are attracted by the choice when it comes to gaming you can role play-creating your own fantasy characters and stories, giving you a chance to step out of everyday life into an imaginary world. And there are shooting games where you can let out your anger and depression in violent situations where you kill people with guns. You can get excited from the games.

However, can these kinds of games really be fun and can being absorbed in virtual reality be good for use Should we worry about their effects on our healthy Popular games like Grand Theft Auto have been blamed for everything from falling results at school to causing acts of extreme violence. Internet safety advisor,Alan Macenzie, thinks“any people understandably will just think that a game is just a game and not realizing the exact content that's in there". He gives an example of the violence,Wholly he Says is “wholly inappropriate for anybody, not to mention children.”

Others will argue that gaming is a harmless form of entertainment. There is evidence that playing video games could actually be good for us. Some games like Game of Thrones and world of Warcraftare are educational and using games certainly can help children learn good qualities. Studies have also shown that the skills used In playing games can cause growth In certain areas of the brain, the ability to think in 3D and even improve our eyesight.

Video game players are also no longer just simple creatures. For some, gaming is having

a positive effect on their social lives like Halo and World of Warcraft often being played in groups. When your group works together to win the game, your sense of achievement is higher than when winning by yourself.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

In our life,we have rarely expressed our gratitude to the one who'd lived those years with us. In fact,we don't have to wait for anniversaries to thank the ones close to us-the ones so easily overlooked. If I have learned anything about giving thanks,it is this:give it now! 36 Saying thanks is such an easy way to add to the world's happiness.

Saying thanks not only brightens someone else's world,it brightens yours. If you're feeling left out, unloved or unappreciated, try reaching out to others. 37

38 In that case don't let embarrassment sink you into silence-speak up the first time you have the chance.

Once a young minister,Mark Brian, was sent to a remote parish of wakiutl Indians in British Columbia. The Indians,he had been told, did not have a word for thank you. But Brian soon found that these people had exceptional generosity. Instead of saying thanks,It is their custom to return every favor with a favor of their own,and every kindness with an equal or superior kindness. 39

I wonder if we had no words in our vocabulary for thank you, would we do a better job of communicating our gratitude? Would we be more responsive, more sensitive, more caring?

Thankfulness sets in motion a chain reaction that transforms people all around us-

including ourselves. 40 Its message is universal; its lyrics transcend all earthly barriers; its music touches the heavens.

A. It may be just the medicine you need.

B. Of course, there are times when you can't express gratitude immediately.

C. They give you whatever you need.

D. They do their thanks.

E. The Indians mean what they do.

F. For no one ever misunderstands the melody of a grateful heart.

G. While your feeling of appreciation is alive and sincere, act on it.

An express train was due to go past about thirty minutes later. If it were not stopped, that long train, full of passengers, would fall into the stream. “Someone must go to the station and warn the station-master,” Kate thought. But who was to go? She would have to go herself. There was no one else. In wind and rain, she started on her difficult was. Soon she was at the bridge that crossed the Des Moines River, a bridge also built of wood, just like the bridge across Honey Creek. The storm had not washed this away, but there was no footpath across it. She would have to cross it by stepping from sleeper(枕木) to sleeper. With great care she began the dangerous crossing, sometimes on her hands and knees, hardly daring to look down between the sleepers into the wild flood waters below. If she should slip, she would fall between the sleepers, into the rapidly flowing stream. At last -she never knew how long it had taken her – she felt solid ground under her feet. But there was no time to rest. She still had to run more than half a mile and had only a few minutes left. Unless she reached the station before the express did, many, many lives would be lost. She did reach the station just as the train came into sight. Fortunately, the station-master was standing outside. “The bridge is down! Stop the train! Oh, please stop it!” Kate shouted breathlessly. The station-master went pale. He rushed into the station building and came back with a signal light. He waved the red light as the train came into the station. It was not a second too early. 21.
