Part III Listening Comprehension

Section A

Directions: In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations and 2 long conversations. At the end of each conversation, one or more questions will be asked about what was said. Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken only once. After each question there will be a pause. During the pause, you must read the four choices marked A), B), C) and D), and decide which is the best answer. Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1 with a single line through the centre. Short Conversation

1.

W: Do you know anyone who is driving to the conference in Boston next weekend? M: Peter is. I think he has room for another person.

Q: What will the woman most probably do next?

2.

M: You are not planning to transfer to a different University next year, are you?

W: If I were, you’d be the first to know.

Q: What does the woman imply?

3.

W: So I hear you’re really happy with your new car. I bet it’s a lot better than the last one you got stuck with, the one you bought from Cathy?

M: You can say that again. I’m sure I’ve made a good choice this time.

Q: What can be inferred from the conversation?

4.

W: I hope you like the novel I lent you. I wasn’t sure whether it was the kind of b ook you would be interested in.

M: You know, I had the same doubt at first. But once I started I simply couldn’t put it down.

Q: What does the man mean?

5.

W: I intend to buy some fruit for the children. These apples and pears seem to be in season. I’ll g et 2 dozen of each.

M: I hope they are as good as they look.

Q: What does the man mean?

6.

W: Oh, this is a beautiful city. I’m really glad I’ve brought my camera.

M: Yes, there are lots of things to take pictures of here. But I hope you will not plan to spend all your time talking pictures. I have some friends who would like to meet you.

Q: What does the man want the woman to do?

7.

W: You Americans are funny. It seems as if you were married with cars.

M: Yeah, I guess that’s true. The country is becomin g one big highway. I was reading that there are about 4 million miles of roads and highways in this country now.

Q: What are they talking about?

8.

M: Hi, Linda, how are you doing? I heard you had an operation over the spring break. W: Yes, thanks for asking. I was pretty much out of condition for a few weeks. But finally I’m back on my feet again.

Q: What can we learn about the woman?

Long Conversation One

M: Do you think young people are given too much freedom nowadays, and that as a result they’ve lost respect for their parents and their elders generally?

W: I don’t think so. My parents never interfered with my plans too much. They advised me but never forced me to do anything I didn’t want to do. I was allowed to take up the career I wanted. I think I respect and love them more for this.

M: Are you quite independent of them now?

W: Yes. As soon as I left school and started my studies as a nurse I became independent financially. I have a government grant. It is enough for my daily life. But I still stay with them a lot, as you know.

M: You seem very close to your parents.

W: I am. Many young people today say they have nothing in common with their parents, but I’m rather lucky because I get on very well with mine. What about you? M: Well, we value family l ife very much in my country. I’m very fond of my family, but I don’t always get on very well with them. They try to control me too much.

W: But they allow you to come to study in England on your own.

M: Yes, but only after a lot of persuasion! Your parents treat you as an adult; my parents treat me as a child.

W: As I said, I’m lucky. Some English parents are like yours. They interfere too much and they just refuse to understand our generation.

Questions 9 to 12 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

9. According to the woman, why does she respect her parents?

10. What happened when the woman began to study nursing?

11. What attitude did the man’s parents have towards his studying abroad/

12. What can we learn from the conversation?

Long Conversation Two

M: Good morning, class.

W: Good morning, sir.

M: Today we'll discuss volcanoes. Can you tell me the most dangerous thing about a volcano?

W: I think the most dangerous hazard of a volcano comes from the lava that flows out of it.

M: Good guess. Although your answer maker sense, the biggest killer from a volcano comes from the ash, not the lava. In fact, ash causes serious problems and can make

humans and animals sick; it can even kill them. Ash also reduces sunlight and can start heavy rainfalls that lead to mudslides. Did you know that it only takes 30 centimeters of dry ash to collapse a roof of a building? Ash also contaminates water supplies, and kills crops. As you can see, ash causes the most destruction.

W: Professor, are there different sizes of volcanoes?

M: Absolutely. There are ordinary volcanoes that can kill thousands of people and often destroy whole cities, and there are super volcanoes which are highly explosive and can kill billions of people and even destroy an entire continent.

W: Are there any super volcanoes in the world today?

M: Actually, yes. There are 40 super volcanoes. One is in Yellowstone National Park in the United States and two others in Britain. Super volcanoes are quite rare with the last eruption occurring about 74,000 years ago in Indonesia.

W: How do super volcanoes differ from ordinary volcanoes and are they easy to find? M: By and large, most people would not be able to recognize a super volcano. Like an iceberg, the larger part of a volcano is hidden.

W: Professor, if the volcano hasn't erupted then how do scientists know what might happen?

M: Well, the scientists are relying on past information from the volcano that erupted in Indonesia and they also forecast their predictions using computer models. Questions 13 to 15 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

13. What is the most dangerous thing about a volcano?

14. Where did the last eruption of a super volcano occur?

15. How can scientists predict the future of volcanoes?

Section B

Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D). Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1 with a single line through the centre.

Passage One

A community theatre is an important part of almost every city or town in the United States. There are over 2,000 community theatres in the United States today, and about 4.5 million people work or perform in these theatres for an audience of more than 50 million people annually. These theatres are amateur organizations and are different from professional theatre companies. A community theatre may have its own building or perform in a school or church hall. The actors and actresses do not receive money for their work in the community theatre. They have other jobs to support themselves instead. Small communities can’t support a full time th eatre. They cannot pay actors,

directors, or stage workers, so the theatre participants work for free. One purpose of community theatre is to provide an opportunity for creative work. Many people join in community theatres because they want to perform or to be creative. Several people in a community theatre group were asked why they join. Each one said he or she needed to be creative, to do something original. One man said “ I love to act. It’s the only time I feel alive.” Another said, “I have a very borin g job. In the play, I can create something.” One woman said, “ My whole life is occupied by my husband and family.

I need something more than that.” Another purpose of community theatre is to educate and improve community. Theatre is an art that also introduces new ideas to the audience.

Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard.

16. How many people participate in the work of community theatres in the United States?

17. How are community theatres different from professional theatre companies?

18. What opportunity does the community theatre provide to the people in a community?

Passage Two

In recent years, many Americans of both sexes and various ages have become increasingly interested in improving their bodies. They have become more devoted to physical fitness. Many persons have a strong desire to be more physically fit.

By nature, Americans are enthusiastic, and energetic about hobbies or pastimes. And now many of them apply this enthusiasm, optimism, and energy to running. As a result, there are more running clubs to join and numerous books and magazines to read about running.

The desire for American people to be physically fit could probably be explained by a "passion" for good health. The high rate of heart attacks in the 1960s has caused an increase of interest in improving the health condition of human body. Middle-aged men especially suffer from heart attacks. Thus, they are one group strongly interested in taking more physical exercise. In fact, many doctors often encourage their patients to become more physically active, especially those who have inactive jobs. It is quite interesting to note that the rate of heart attacks began to decrease between 1972 and 1974 and it is still decreasing now.

It seems that physical fitness has now become a new "love" of Americans. But will it last very long? Nobody knows. Only time will tell—or until another "new passion" comes along and takes its place.

Questions 19 to 21 are based on the passage you have just heard.

19. Why are Americans so interested in physical exercise?

20. What happens when American people apply great enthusiasm in running?

21. What kinds of patients are especially encouraged to take part in physical exercise?

Passage Three

As a result of rising university costs, many students are finding it necessary to take on part-time jobs. To make finding those jobs easier, the placement service has put together a listing of what is available locally. For some students, these part-time jobs could lead to the full time work after graduation, as they may offer experience in their own field, like finance, marketing or even management. For example, national savings bank offers work on a half time basis. That's 20 hours a week. Retail stores and restaurants have positions requiring fewer hours. Even less time is expected of those providing child-care. We have a number of families registered with us who are looking for baby-sitters for as few as four hours a week. For students who prefer outdoor work there're seasonal positions right on campus, working with the gardening and landscaping teams. These often require the most time and they are the least flexible in terms of scheduling. To see a complete list of these and other available jobs, including the salary offered and the hours required, stop by our office and be sure to bring a resume with you. When you find something that interests you, we'll put you in touch with the person offering it. In addition, our counselors will give you hints about successful interviewing

Questions 22 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard.

22.What do we know about the "placement service" from the passage?

23.Which job requires the most time according to the passage?

24.What should students bring with them to the office?

25.What will the counselors at the office help students do?

Section C

Directions: In this section, you will hear a passage three times. When the passage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general idea. When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks with the exact words you have just heard. Finally, when the passage is read for the third time, you should check what you have written.

Nonverbal communication is important because people use this message system to express attitudes and emotions. Therefore, it often expresses your internal states. Consciously and unconsciously, intentionally and unintentionally, people make important judgments and decisions (26)concerning the internal states of others----states they often express without words. For example, you (27)evaluate the quality of your relationships according to (28)interpretations of these nonverbal messages. Nonverbal communication is a powerful tool for expressing your emotional and relational feelings toward another person. It is also used to create and manage impressions. From tone of voice, to the distance between you and your partners, to the amount of touching in which you (29)engage, you can gather clues to the closeness of

your relationships. Nonverbal communication is so (30)subtle that a shifting of body zones can also send a message. The first time you move from holding hands with your partner to touching his or her face, you are sending a message, and that message takes on added (31)significance if your touch is returned.

If you observe someone with a (32)clenched fist and a grim expression, you do not need words to tell you that this person is not happy. If you hear someone’s voice (33)quaver and see his or her hands tremble, you may infer that the person is fearful or anxious, despite what he or she might say. Your emotions (34)are reflected in your posture, face, and eyes---be it fear, joy, anger or sadness--- so you can express them without ever (35)uttering a word. For this reason, most people rely heavily on what they learn through their eyes. In fact, research indicates that you will believe nonverbal messages instead of verbal messages when the two contradict each other. As Heraclitus remarked over two thousand years ago, “Eyes are more accurate witne sses than ears.”

What are the two speakers talking about/discussing? What is the conversation mainly about? What is the main topic of the conversation? What’s the purpose of sb.’s calling/doing...?
