If you’re stuck in the middle of a creative project, taking a walk may send your

creative juices flowing again, according to a new study by Stanford University.

We’ve he ard countless artists and scientists finding inspiration for their best ideas during aimless walks, from US President Barack Obama to Facebook CEO Mark Euckberg. But until now, there is little scientific evidence to support the idea that exercise boosts creativity.

Marily Oppezzo, a graduate student, said she often went for walks with her adviser to discuss paper topics. One day she suddenly thought: ―What about walking and whether it really has an effect on creativity?‖

So she levied a group of students and set out to see if she could make them more creative. She put her volunteers on a room equipped with only a desk and a treadmill(跑步机). First, she asked them to come up with alternative uses for common objects, such as a button, while sitting at the desk. Then the participants were asked to walk in the treadmill. While walking, each student repeated the creative tests. For almost every student, creativity increased greatly when they walked. Most were able to think of about 60 percent more uses for an object.

Many people would assume that walking outside in a pleasant environment with fresh air would be even better for creativity. To test this, Oppezzo moved her experiment outdoors. Surprisingly, her results didn’t support this assumption. After strolling around Stanford’s beautiful campus, the volunteers produced more creative ideas than when they sat for the same length of time either indoors or outdoors. But they were not more creative than when they walked on an indoor treadmill.

Oppezzo admits she can’t e xactly explain how a casual stroll affects mental processes related to creativity. But she said, ―It may be that walking improves mood and creativity blooms more easily when mind is in good spirits.‖

8. Barack Obama is mentioned in Paragraph 2 to explain that __________.

B. Walking outside would be better for creativity than walking on the treadmill.

C. The experiment proved that the more people exercise, the more creative they are.

D. Students could think of more uses for an object when walking on the treadmill

than sitting.

11. What is probably the best title of the passage?

A. Good spirits make us feel better.

B. Creativity is of great importance.

To Ji Xiaoyu, taking the national graduate school entrance examination was a natural part of his college plan. ―Obtaining a master’s degree will give me a better chance at

getting a decent job,‖ said the 22-year-old graduate of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. He took the exam last year.

But now, it’s no longer such a ―natural‖ choice for many students. With employment benefits fading, students are thinking carefully about whether they should take the exam.

Wang Wei, senior lecturer of Kuakao Education, a training agency, thinks that a major reason for the decline is the dim career prospects for postgraduates. ―Many students are now taking master’s degree courses as a shortcut to a better job,‖ said Wang. ―But recent employment data may disappoint them.‖

The employment rate of postgraduates in China in 2013 was 87 percent, 8 percent less than that of undergraduates, according to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.

Chen Lu, 23, is graduating this year from Tianjin University of Finance and Economics. She says taking the exam will enable her to pursue her real passion. The logistics major has signed up for a master’s degree in journalism at Renmin University. Many other people are like her. According to MyCOS Research Institute, 28 percent of test takers in the 2014 national graduate school entrance examination applied for a major different from their bachelor’s degree.

Given this situation, experts are calling on students to think clearly about why they want a master’s degree. In deciding whether to take the exam or not, students are advised to make the decision based on the nature of their major.

―For majors that focus more on theory, students should apply for a master’s degree immediately after graduation as it’s important for them to keep up with the latest theoretical developments,‖ said Zhang Xiangkun, associate researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. These majors include mathematics, physics, philosophy and linguistics. ―But for majors that focus on practical skills, it is more urgent to get familiar with relevant skills as soon as possible and get to know your own strengths and weaknesses.‖

12. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A. The undergraduates are in great demand these days.

B. A total of 1.76 million students took last year’s national postgraduate exam.

C. The employment rate of postgraduates was higher than that of undergraduates.

D. The number of postgraduate applicants has been dropping over the past five years.

13. In Wang Wei’s view, what’s the main reason for fewer postgraduate applicants?

A. More students decide to be familiar with relevant skills.

B. The postgraduate degree can’t ensure them good jobs.

C. The society provides fewer opportunities for them.

D. The economy continues to decline.

14. According to the passage, students can make a decision for their future study based

on ______.

A. their interests

B. their future jobs

C. the economy of their families

D. the characteristics of their majors

15. Suppose Mary is a university student majoring in linguistics, she’d better _________

after graduation.

A. apply for a postgraduate exam

B. follow her teacher’s advice

C. apply for a job relating to her major

D. look for a job in big cities

Dear PuzzledMom,

What puzzles you is actually a puzzle for many a parent in China. My idea is that it is not quite right for you to do so.

Although high grades are an important factor in evaluating students and their future university admission, development in wisdom, emotion, health, and life attitude school never be ignored. There are many examples around us. Some all-A students in school have turned out not to be equally successful in society as they were expected. The reason is often that the pressure from their parents allows them almost no time for other activities. Furthermore, punishment is by no means a wise choice to help them grow up mentally and physically.

So my suggestion is that y ou take your friends’ advice. More importantly, let h im live like a suuny boy; let him have more friends and social activities; and let him be himself as we teenagers often do.
