Passage 1

Driving cars, trucks and motorcycles is an important part of our lives. We do it every day to get to work, to school or to friends' houses.

Driving can be very convenient, but can also cause many problems. Waiting in line at a red light, a driver may get impatient and decide just to drive right through it. If another car is coming from the other direction, there might be a terrible accident. Cutting another car off can make its driver angry, so that driver cuts off someone else. Passage 1

On the fourth Thursday in November, Americans celebrate the feast of

Th anksgiving. This feast is a time when the family comes together for a meal and gives thanks to God for the blessings they have received. The first thanksgiving feast

was celebrated by the early American settlers who started the feast to give thanks to God for their good harvest.

In America thanksgiving is the family holiday. It is on that holiday that all the family members make a special effort to gather together . The feast is always held on Thursday and most people have a four-day holiday from school and work. Thus they are able to travel a great distance to be with their family.

The thanksgiving meal is traditionally turkey which was a large bird valued as food for the first time. The table is filled with fruits, walnuts and many types of vegetables. For the sweet dish the main choice is usually pumpkin pie. The meal is a time for the members of the family to talk to each other. There will be talking before the meal, during the meal and long after the meal.

On thanksgiving morning there are in many cities sporting events and parades to mark the day. The family dinner is usually held in the afternoon around 4p.m. . The mother will prepare the meal and the father will carve the turkey. He will be seated at the head of the table. The meal will begin with a short prayer of thanksgiving to God for the blessings the family received. The father will also thank the family for coming together on this day. During the meal there is plenty of food for everyone present. The meal is a very joyful time. When the meal is finished some will help with the dishes and others will return to the living room to talk or watch television.

III. Reading Comprehension

Passage 1

Many countries face a somewhat more serious economic problem in the form of an unfavorable trade balance with other nations. Such an imbalance exists when the total value of a country’s imports exceeds that of its exports. For example, if a country buys $25 billion of products from other countries, yet sells only $10 billion of its own products overseas, its trade deficit(贸易逆差)is $15 billion. Many underdeveloped nations find themselves in this position because they lack natural resources or the industrial capacity to use these resources, and thus have to import raw materials or manufactured goods.

One effect of a trade deficit is the flow of currency out of a country. In the case of an underdeveloped nation, this can cause many financial difficulties, including failure to meet debt payments and obstacles to creation of an industrial base. Even in the case of a fully developed nation such as the United States, a large trade deficit is a reason for alarm. American products, made by well-paid workers in U.S. industries, cost more to produce than those made in places like Asia, where labor and material costs are much lower. Money spent on foreign products is money not spent on items produced by domestic industries.

山东大学研究生英语B班新闻英语听力答案8

准备阶段 1.Exercise 1: Listen to the passage and decide whether the following statements are true or false, write T for true, F for false. 老师意见: Britain Marks 10 Years of Princess Diana’s Death The 10th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death has resurrec ted old controversies about the “People’s Princess.” Since her death in a car crash in Paris in 1997, Diana’s legacy has been hotly debated. Some see a troubled woman who courted media attention. Others recall a warm, generous person who focused her energy on charitable causes and dared to hug AIDS victims. Australian feminist Germaine Greer described Diana as “moron” this month, but Prime Minister Gordon Brown hailed her as “extraordinary woman” who “still has the remarkable ability to move and inspire.” Despite the debate, there is no doubt that Diana spent much of her time doing humanitarian work. She was involved in such organizations as the Great Ormond Street Hospital for sick children in London, the National Aids Trust and the Leprosy Mission. The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund was established in September 1997 to continue the Princess’s humanitarian work in the United Kingdom and overseas. The fund was established with the proceeds from sales of the recording of Elton John’s performance of “Candle in the Wind”, which was played at Diana’s funeral. Samantha Rennie is a spokesperson for the fund. She said Diana used her celebrity status to draw attention to unpopular causes. “She supported causes that were in her life unpopular. You might remember pictures of her shaking hands with someone who had HIV/AIDS at a time when this was thought horrific and yet now 10 years on it seems quiet normal. Similarly she was photographed walking through minefields at a time that this was considered hugely controversial and yet now landmines have been stigmatized. So in the intervening years of course people’s attitudes change, but in many ways they change for the better.”
