It was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers had lived in the same way for centuries.

Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there

were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog’s legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places.

This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future. But the dream didn’t last long.

The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and, there seemed to be more insects around lately.

The villagers decided that they couldn’t just wait to see the crops failing and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides(杀虫剂) and medicine. Soon there was no money left.

Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn’t been useless. They had been doing an important job --- eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading diseases.

Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning.

4. From paragraph 1 we learn that the villagers __________.

A. worked very hard for centuries

B. dreamed of having a better life

C. were poor but somewhat content

D. lived a different life from their forefathers

6. What might be the cause of the children’s sickness?

A. The crops didn’t do well.

B. There were too many insects.

C. The visitors brought in diseases.

D. The pesticides were overused.

7. What can we infer from the last sentence of the text?

A. Happiness comes from peaceful life in the country.

B. Health is more important than money.

C. The harmony between man and nature is important.

D. Good old days will never be forgotten.

C

I hated dinner parties. But I decided to give them another shot because I’m in London. And my friend Mallery invited me. And because dinner parities in London are

very different from those back in New York. There, “I’m having a dinner party means: “I’m booking a table for 12 at a restaurant you can’t afford and we’ll be sharing the cheque evenly, no matter what you eat.” Worse, in Manhattan there is always someone who leaves before the bill arrives. They’ll throw down cash, half of what they owe, and then people like me, who don’t drink, end up paying even more. But if I try to use the same trick, the hostess will shout: “Where are you going?” And it’s not like I can say I have somewhere to go: everyone know I have nowhere to go.

But in London, dinner parties are in people’s homes. Not only that, the guests are an interesting mix. The last time I went to one, the guests were from France, India, Denmark and Nigeria; it was like a gathering at the United Nations in New York. The mix is less striking. It’s like a gathering at Bloomingdal e’s, a well-known department store.

For New Yorkers, talking about other parts of the world means Brooklyn and Queens in New York. But at Mallery’s, when I said that I had been to Myanmar recently, people knew where it was. In New York people would think it was a usual new club.

8. What does the word “shot” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A. Choice

B. Try

C. Style

D. Goal

9. What does the writer dislike most about dinner parties in New York?

A. There is a strange mix of people.

B. The restaurants are expensive.

C. The bill is not fairly shared.

D. People have to pay cash.

10. What does the author think of the parties in London?

A. A bit unusual

B. Full of tricks

C. Less costly

D. More interesting

11. What is the author’s opinion of some New Yorkers from her experience?

A. Easy-going

B. Self-centred

C. Generous

D. Conservative

D

Every people has its own way of saying things, its own special expressions. Many everyday American expressions are based on colors.

Red is a hot color. Americans often use it to express heat. They may say they are red hot about something unfair. When they are red hot they are very angry about something. The small hot tasting peppers found in many Mexican foods are called red hots for their color and their fiery taste. Fast loud music is popular with many people. They may say the music is red hot, especially the kind called Dixieland jazz.

Pink is a lighter kind of red. People sometimes say they are in the pink when they are in good health. The expression was first used in America at the beginning of the twentieth century. It probably comes from the fact that many babies are born with a nice pink color that shows that they are in good health.

The color green is natural for trees and grass. But it is an unnatural color for humans. A person who has a sick feeling stomach may say she feels a little green.

A passenger on a boat who is feeling very sick from high waves may look very green.

Sometimes a person may be upset because he does not have something as nice as a friend has, like a fast new car. That person may say he is green with envy. Some people are green with envy because a friend has more dollars or greenbacks. Dollars are called greenbacks because that is the color of the back side of the paper money.

The color black is used often in expressions. People describe a day in which everything goes wrong as a black day. The date of a major tragedy is remembered as a black day. A blacklist is illegal now. But at one time, some businesses refused to employ people who were on a blacklist for belonging to unpopular organizations.

In some cases, colors describe a situation. A brown out is an expression for a reduction in electric power. Brown outs happen when there is too much demand for electricity. The electric system is unable to offer all the power needed in an area. Black outs are common during World War Two. Officials would order all lights in a city turned off to make it difficult for enemy planes to find a target in the dark of night.

12. Americans use “red hot” to describe the following EXCEPT____.

A. something

unfair

B. small hot-tasting peppers

C. the person who is very

angry D. popular music like Dixieland jazz

13. People use “in the pink” to express they are in good health because____.

A. the expression has a very long history

B. the color pink makes people feel happy

C. people think the color pink is gentler than red

D. healthy babies are born with nice pink skin

14. In the writer’s eyes, what is related to a black day?

A. Being sent a beautiful

gift

B. Passing a very difficult test

C. Being refused during an important interview

D. Being invited to an exciting party

15. The writer wants to tell us ______in American everyday expressions

A. the most popular

colors B. different meanings of colors

C. how to use colors

correctly D. why Americans like to use colors

——————————新学期新成绩新目标新方向—————————— 2019学年度上学期第一次月考 高一英语试卷 时间:100分钟满分:120分*1.25=150分 第一部分:听力略 第二部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题 2 分,满分 40分) A On a Sunday morning, I was driving down a road and saw something I couldn’t believe. A little girl, less than two, was pushing her stroller (婴儿车) across the road. It was Sunday morning and traffic was not heavy. I stopped my car at once and ran toward her. This little girl knew enough to run from a stranger. I tried to catch her in order that I could get her out of the road. Suddenly her father came running down a hill across the road from where I had parked my car. He ran right to her and caught her up, saying “bad girl” to her. I picked up the stroller and gave it to him. The father grabbed (抓住) the stroller and walked toward where he came from without a word. I went back and sat in my car for a few minutes with my son. My hands were shaking and tears were about to run out of my eyes. “Do you feel cold, Mom?” asked my son. I just shook my head. After this happened, I thought about how thankful I was. Even though the father didn’t say thank you, I feel that I did something good. Doing something for someone else is pleasing, even when it’s only a matter of being in the right place at the right time. I didn’t really “save” her, but I feel like it was important that I happened to be there. It is sad that I was the only one who stopped. It really made me a little disappointed that no one else stopped to help. 21.When the author saw the little girl, ________. A.the girl had lost her way B.she was driving to work in a hurry

It was the hunting season. My uncle was 72 years old, but he was still strong. My cousin at that time was 10 years old, and I was 25. It took us three hours by car to reach the place we were looking for, and we arrived there at 5:15 p.m. That night we ate our food, drank Arabic coffee, and sat around the fire talking until 10:30. Then we went to bed. We left camp the next day at 7 o’clock in the morning. We went north and caught two kinds of birds. However, we got into trouble at 10:00 a.m. when our car got stuck in the sand! We spent about three hours trying to pull the car out without any success. Finally, we decided to walk. I talked with my uncle about how hard it was for an old man or a young boy to walk more than 40 kilometers in the desert. He agreed with me. So I took a bottle of water with me and started to return alone. Luckily, I met a man who was riding his camel. He took me to his house. When I had had enough rest, I asked him to take me to the road and he did. Soon, I found a car which took me to the city to get help. I had one day to get back to my uncle and cousin. We were so happy to see each other again. We learned from the experience that the desert is dangerous, but we will never give up hunting. 21. It can be inferred that the author _____. A. lived by hunting B. lived by raising birds C. loved hunting very much D. loved raising birds very much 22. Why did the author walk out of the desert alone? A.
