Without the atmosphere there would be no weather, no wind, rain, snow, or clouds. Air is all around us; we live in the bottom of a great ocean of air. It is invisible, but we can feel it when it moves. There are miles of air above us, pressing down with great weight on the earth and everything on it. Because air presses down on us from all directions at the same time, and because we are able to bear(忍受)this weight, we do not seem to feel it. But scientists have proved that air has this weight, and that anything that has weight creates (产生)a force called pressure. As changes in air pressure take place, they make air move.

Air is a gas that expands (膨胀)when heated, gets lighter, and moves upward. When air is cooled , it gets heavier, sinks close to the earth’s surface, and flows like water in a great river. As warm air rises, cold air rushes in to take its place. Thus winds originate (起源). The winds that blow high above us are caused by the warmer air running away from colder air. The wind we feel near the earth’s surface is the heavy colder air trying hard to catch the warmer air. Changes in temperature cause the air to move. And of course there are many changes, so air movements are taking place practically all the time.

72. The first paragraph mainly tells us the causes of __________.

A. why we don’t feel air

B. why atmosphere is important to us

C. why there is air surrounding us

D. stop warm air running away

75. Which of the following pictures best tells the movements of warm air and cold air?

76. How do the winds that blow high above us create?

A.It is high above us.

B. Atmosphere is important to us

C. The warmer air runs away from colder air.

D. Air presses down on us from all directions at the same time

When someone says “well, I guess I’ll have to g9o to face the music”, it does not mean he is planning to go to a concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this or that, and why you did not do this or that. Sour music, indeed, but it has to be faced.

The phrase “to face the music”is familiar to every America, young and old. It is ant least 100years old. Where did the expression come from?

The first information comes from the American writer Games Fenimore cooper. He said---in 1851---that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on stage. After they got their cue to go on, they often said, “ It’s time to go to face the music.” And that is exactly what they did---face the orchestra which was just below the stage.

An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be friendly or perhaps unfriendly, especially if he forgot his lined. But he had to go out.

So “to face the music” came having to go through something no matter how unpleasant the experience might be because you knew you had no choice.

The other explanation come from the army. Men had to face inspection by their leader. The soldiers worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment clean---shiny enough to pass inspection? Still, the men had to go out, and face the music of the band, as well as the inspection. What else could they do?

77. According to the passage, the underlined word “music” means “___”.

A. your boss’s criticism

B. your leader’s inspection

C. something unpleasant to be experienced your

D. pop music

78. The phrase to face the music was first used by ___.

A. all the Americans

B. the American writer Games Fenimore cooper

C. some American actors

D. the American orchestra

79. An actor might feel frightened or nervous when going on stage. One of the reasons is that___.

A. his performance might not satisfy most of the audience

B. he might not remember what he should say on stage

C. he had to face the unfriendly audience

D. most of the audience might be his friends

80. “To face the music” is also used to mean that soldiers were not willing ____.

A. to be examined about their equipment

B. to be found weak

C. to show themselves up in public

2016-2017学年内蒙古乌兰察布市集宁一中西校区高二(下)期 末英语试卷 第一部分:阅读理解(共两节)第一节(满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑.1.(6分)Many countries follow special custos when a child's baby teeth fall out. Many of these customs tell stories about animals taking the teeth. For example,Koreans have the custom of throwing the fallen tooth onto the roof of a house so that a magpie (喜鹊)can take the tooth away and bring a new tooth for the child. This custom is also followed by some other Asian countries, such as Japan and Vietnam. Other countries, though, have tooth customs about other animals. In Mexico and Spain, for example,it is thought that a mouse takes a fallen tooth away and leaves some money. But in Mongolia,it is dogs that take children's teeth away.Dogs are highly respected in Mongolian culture. It is believed that the new tooth will grow strong if the baby tooth is fed to a dog,so parents in Mongolia will puttheir children's fallen teeth in a piece of meat and feed it to a dog. In France and the USA,a child will put a fallen tooth under his or her pillow before going to bed.It is thought that in the early morning, when the child is still sleeping, the Tooth Fairy will take the tooth away and leave something else under the pillow. What she will leave is hard to know.It is said that in France the Tooth Fairy may leave some candies;however,in the United States, she may leave money. 1.In Vietnam,if a child's tooth falls out,he or she will. A.throw it onto the roof of a house B.feed it to a mouse C.put it in a piece of meat and feed the meat to a dog D.leave it to the Tooth Fairy 2.From the last paragraph,we can know that in France and the USA.

According to body language expert Robert Phipps, the way people sleep at night actually determines a lot about the type of personality they have. Phipps has identified four sleeping positions that affect personality. Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, tend to sleep in the fetal (胎儿的) position. He found that this is the most common bedtime position, with nearly 58 percent of people sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up (蜷曲), the more comfort we are seeking, according to Phipps. The second most common position is the log. Sleeping with a straight body, with arms at each side, as if they are standing guard at Buckingham Palace, indicates stubbornness, and these people (the 28 percent who sleep this way) often wake up stiffer than when they went to sleep. “The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and you can become inflexible, which means you make things harder for yourself,” according to Phipps. Yearner (向往) sleepers are next on the list. About 25 percent of people sleep in this style—on their side with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are either chasing a dream or perhaps being chased themselves. Yearners are typically their own worst critics, always expecting the best results, explained Phipps. These people often wake up refreshed and eager to face the challenges of the day ahead. Perhaps the most peculiar (奇怪的) of sleep styles is the freefaller position. This sleep style makes up 17 percent of the population. They sleep face down with arms stretched out. These people, according to Phipps, feel like they have little control over their life. Not only is this the strangest of sleep styles, but also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy. Inconclusion, Phipps has only one more thing to add: “A good night's sleep set you up for the following day and our sleeping positions can determine how we feel when we wake.” (1)Which sleeping position indicates that the sleeper tends to seek perfection? A、The fetal position. B、The log position. C、The yearner position. D、The freefaller position. (2)Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? A、A good night's sleep sets you up for the following day B、Your personality depends a lot on how you sleep at night C、How you sleep at night affects what you do the next day D、Which sleeping position helps you sleep comfortably Our room was on the second floor but you could still hear the roar of the ocean and see the stars at night.

Where do you suppose I can find them?”
