Passage Two

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.

Though it is mere 1 to 3 percent of the population, the upper class possesses at least 25 percent of the nat ion’s wealth. This class has two parts: upper-upper and lower-upper. Basically, the

upper-upper class is the “old rich”-families that have been wealthy for several generations-an aristocracy(贵族) of birth and wealth. Their names are in the Social Register, a listing of acceptable members of high society. A few are known across the nation, such as the Rockefellers, the Roosevelts, and the Vanderbilts. Most are not visible to the general public. They have no relation to the rest of the community, drawing their income from the investment of their inherited(继承的) wealth. By contrast, the lower-upper class is the “new rich”. Although they may be wealthier than some of the old rich, the new rich have been greedy to make their money like everybody else under their class. Thus their prestige(威望) is generally lower than that of the old rich, who have not found it necessary to lift a finger to make their money, and who tend to look down upon the new rich.

However its wealth is acquired, the upper class is very, very rich. They have enough money and leisure time to cultivate an interest in the arts and to collect rare books, paintings, and sculptures(雕塑). They generally live in exclusive areas, belong to exclusive social clubs, communicate with each other, and marry their own kind-all of which keeps them so distant from the masses that they

have been called the out-of-sight class. More than any other class, they tend to be conscious of being members of a class. They also command an enormous amount of power and influence home and abroad, as they hold many top government positions, run the Council on Foreign Relations, and control multinational corporations. Their actions affect the lives of millions.

26.All of the following statements are true except that_______

A. the upper-upper class is of aristocratic origin.

B. the “old rich’ enjoy higher reputation than “new rich”.

C. the upper class owns at least a quarter of the country’s wealth.

D. the “old rich’ isolate themselves and lead a lonely life.

27. The “old rich” get riche r ___________.

A. by investing their inherited wealth

B. by collecting paintings and sculptures

C. through their reputation

D. through the Social Register

28. The reason why the “old rich” look down upon the“new rich” is that ___________.

A. the “old rich” are wealthier than the latter

B. the “new rich” have no interest in arts

C. the “new rich” thirst for money

D. the “old rich” are conscious of being members of the upper class

29. The upper class is also called the out-of-sight class because ____________.

A. they don’t communicate with any people

B. they move frequently from place to place

C. they spend most of their time abroad.

D. they keep away from the general public

30. We can learn from the passage that ____________.

A. the upper class is powerful and influential

B. the upper class collects rare books to make money

C. the upper class holds all top government positions

D. the “old rich” make much more money than the “new rich”

Passage Three

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

As a rule, there is more genuine satisfaction, a truer life, and more obtained from life in the humble cottages of the poor than in the palaces of the rich. I always pity the sons and the daughters of rich men, who are attended by servants, and have governess(女家庭教师) at a large age, but I am glad to remember that they don’t know what they have missed.

They have kind fathers, and mothers, too, and think that they enjoy the sweetness of these blessings to the fullesst: but they cannot do; for the poor boy who has in his father his constant companion, tutor, and model, and in his mother---holy name—his nurse, teacher, saint, all in one, has a richer, more precious fortune in life than any rich man’s son who is not so favored can possibly know. Cmpared with these, all other fortunes count for little.

It is because I know how sweet and happy and pure the home of honest poverty is, free from perplexing care, from social envies and emulations(竞争), how loving and united its members may be in the common interest of supporting the family, that I sympathize (同情)with the rich man’s boy and congratulate the poor man’s boy; it is for these reasons that from the ranks of the poor, so many strong , famous, self-reliant men have always sprung and always must spring.

If you read the list of the immortals who “were not born to die”, you will find that most of them have been born to the precious heritage(遗产)of poverty.

It seems, nowadays, a matter of universal desire that poverty should be abolished, but to abolish poverty at the expense of honesty would be to destroy the soil upon which mankind produces the virtues which enable our race to reach a still higher civilization than it now possesses.

31.The author pities those born in rich families because_______.

A. they do not enjoy a more real happiness

B.they do not have kind parents

C.they are attended by servants

D. they do not know what they have missed

32. To a poor child, his father is __________.

A. a saint

B. a servant

C. someone immortal

D. someone to learn from

33. Many strong and self-dependent men have come from poor families because ___________.

A. the families are poor but supportive and loving.

B. they live under great social pressure.

C. they are honest people.

D. they are not born to die.

34. The author thinks that poverty_______.

A. is the soil for a better future

B. is virtuous

C. is honest and self-denying

D. is civilization

35.The purpose of this passage is to _________.

A. discuss the ills of society

B. support the protection of poor regions

C. argue that poverty is beneficial

D. oppose the abolishing of poverty

When I was a young police reporter, I oncce missed an opportunity for a perfect news picture. In that scene, the house was very quite. A clock ticked. An old man slowly leaned forward, curved his arms like parentheses around the head and feet of the dead body of his grandson, then pressed his face to the shroud and remained motionless.

In that hushed moment I recognized the makings of a prize-winning news photograph. I adjusted the light, the lens setting and distance, locked a bulb in the flashgun, raised the camera and composed the scene in the viewfinder.

I don’t know how many seconds I stood there, unable to snap that shutter. I was keenly aware of the powerful story-telling value that photo would have, and my professional conscience told me to take it. Yet I could not make my hand fire that flashbulb and intrude on the po or old man’s island of grief.

I missed that perfect picture, but I still feel right about what I did.

Think again. Leasing can end up being just as expensive as buying. Most people think about leasing because they believe it will cost them less money. They're right-it is cheaper, but only in the short term. For example, if you were to lease anew Subaru Forester, you might pay $300 per month for the car. If you were to buy the same car, you would pay about $400 per month. Over a three-year, you would save $3600-a big savings. But after your lease is over, you have to give the car back. Many people want to lease because they can drive a more expensive car than they might otherwise be able to afford. For example, if you spend $300 monthly on a car, you might be able to lease a new Ford Explorer. For the same price, you might have to buy a used Explorer, or buy a new but much less expensive model. A lease, therefore, allows you to drive the latest models of more expensive cars. However, whatever car you can afford to buy you get to keep it, and it will always have a resell or trade-in(以新旧换)value if you want to upgrade to a new car later. Furthermore, people who lease cars are often shocked by how much they must pay when the lease is over . Most leases limit you to a certain number of miles. If you go over that, you must pay for each mile. As a result, you may end up paying thousands of dollars in mileage(里程) fees. In addition, when you lease ,you have to pay for regular maintenance and repairs to the vehicle. Since you must return the car finally, you are paying to repair someone else's car.

But scientists say the farms of the future could be built in tall buildings in some large cities. It may be difficult to believe, but in fact, the technology for growing crops in doors already exists. Farming in the city is already happening. Some vegetables are already grown in greenhouses. Even the scientists at the South Pole research station can enjoy fresh vegetables they grow in their own greenhouse. Experts say indoor farming solves many problems. First, traditional farming takes up a lot of land. Growing crops in tall buildings — called vertical farming(垂直农业)— can solve the problem. Also, fruits and vegetables grown indoors would not face serious threats from insects and weather. Thou gh vertical farms don’t exist yet, experts have created a plan for recycling in such farms. The water from indoor fish ponds would be used to water crops. Gases from crop waste would be used to heat the building. Waste from chicken or pigs would be reused as a source of energy. But experts believe vertical farming is not going to be easy. They say it can be difficult to control climate conditions indoors. Besides, Plants differ in their weather and lighting needs. For example, some plants like warm, sunny weather, but other plants prefer cooler temperatures. That’s not to say these difficulties won’t be overcome —but it will take time. Most experts suggest it may take about 5 to 15 years before the first vertical farms could be created. 1.The word “farm” may make you think of the countryside.
