A ★ For years, he had difficulty saving to buy a house because something would always happen and use more money. Although he made efforts, he simply could not go long before spending the extra money that he had saved. Then one day a car accident badly damaged the car his wife was driving. The repairs might cost them five thousand dollars. Unfortunately, they were now in debt (债务) and so the car would have to wait. He realized that they needed a solution to their money problems. He worked long and hard for weeks, saving and managing his money in a way he had never done before. In a few months he had saved enough money to have his wife’s car repaired. Once the car was repaired, he discussed with his wife how quickly they had put aside the money they needed. During their discussion his wife encouraged him to open a second account (账户) so they could continue to put away the same amount of money that they were saving every week for the car repair. This money would go towards the house they had always wanted to buy. In a little over a year he saved more than twenty thousand dollars and was able to make the down payment (首付款). He did something in a short while that he had failed to achieve in his previous attempts. This man’s experiences gave him a different feeling about money. He and his wife have continued to keep their second account. This time they have decided to start saving for their retirement, putting away just a little less every week than they did for their house. One man developed a new set of good qualities because he had a goal that was important for him to achieve — he made a plan to achieve it and followed through. The experience of a single bad luck taught him a valuable lesson and challenged him to plan his saving, and spending habits again. In the process he also changed his

高考英语阅读理解专题训练精品题(5) Passage Fifteen (Contribution of Coeducation) Imagining being asked to spend twelve or so years of your life in a society which consisted only of members of own sex. How would you react? Unless there was something definitely wrong with y ou, you wouldn’t be too happy about it, to say the least. It is all the more surprising therefore that so many parents in the world choose to impose such abnormal conditions on their children –conditions which they themselves wouldn’t put up with for one minute! Any discussion of this topic is bound to question the aims of education. Stuffing children’s heads full of knowledge is far from being foremost among them. One of the chief aims of educations is to equip future citizens with all they require to take their place in adult society. Now adult society is made up of men and women, so how can a segregated school possibly offer the right sort of preparation for it? Anyone entering adult society after years of segregation can only be in for a shock. A co-educational school offers children nothing less than a true version of society in miniature. Boys and girls are given the opportunity to get to know each other, to learn to live together from their earliest years. They are put in a position where they can compare themselves with each other in terms of academic ability, athletic achievement and many of the extra-curricular activities which are part of school life. What a practical advantage it is ( to give just a small example ) to be able to put on a school play in which the male parts will be taken by boys and the female parts by girls! What nonsense co-education makes of the argument that boys are cleverer than girl or vice-versa. When segregated, boys and girls are made to feel that they are a race apart. Rivalry between the sexes is fostered. In a coeducational school, everything falls into its proper place. But perhaps the greatest contribution of co-education is the healthy attitude to life it encourages. Boys don’t grow up believing that women are mysteri ous creatures –airy goddesses, more like book-illustrations to a fairy-tale, than human beings. Girls don’t grow up imagining that men are romantic heroes. Years of living together at

You don’t need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time. In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice them, you can see that happiness is always around you. Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can’t be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving(旋转) door. When it closes, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person. 21.When you do something wrong, _______________. A. you may correct it

高一英语阅读训练 Too many people think that global warming is not a threat, but I think it is one of the biggest problems. Our world has been greatly affected by climate change and its critical that people, young and old, work together to fight it. How are children supposed to fight global warming if they grow up not knowing about its dangers? Children should be taught ways they can help in primary school, which is why it is critical that more schools offer environmental education classes. I think the nation should require schools to have a class about being “green”——Green Living could be its name. Every school should teach students about global warming, its effect, and what they can do to reduce their carbon footprints. In the classes, students could be assigned(安排)to find solutions to everyday energy problems, while learning about their influence on the earth and how we all can help. Students will probably use what they have learned in class at home, where it will affect the whole family. However, to be effective, schools must take steps to be “green” too. What would children be learning if the school’s lights were always left on and there were no recycling dustbins? When schools are renovated(修缮) or new ones are built, towns should support an eco-friendly design that would save energy and reduce power bills. Green living and green schools are part of a new wave that should be sweeping the nation, but is not. How will our future leaders respond after years of living in a community where preserving our world’s natural integrity(完整性) just isn’t considered important? Schools and the government should be responsible for teaching young people about global warming quickly. 1.In the passage, the author suggests that it should be necessary to_______ A.make it clear if global warming is a threat. B.teach students ways to build a friendly relationship C.give children environmental education classes D.help schools develop effective educational programs 2. According to the passage, in order to make schools “green”, _______ A. schools should be enlarged B. recycling dustbins should be replaced by new ones C. students should protect our natural integrity D. people should turn off the lights when no one is there 3. The author is eager to tell the readers that_______ A. more money should be provided to equip the school with recycling dustbins. B. we should take action to prevent global warming before it is too late C. government should close more polluted factories D. we should avoid a new sandstorm sweeping the nation 4. Albert Einstein, a Great Scientific Thinker 艾伯特? Albert Einstein (1879-1955) was one of the greatest and most original scientific thinkers of all time. Born of Jewish parents at Ulm in Germany, he completed his education in Switzerland and got his Ph. D. at the University of Zurich. He went to live in the United States in 1933 because of the rise of Nazism in Germany and Hitler’s persecution of the Jews. In 1905, while still at Zurich, he published his Special Theory of Relativity, which was based on things everyone may have noticed. If two trains are standing alongside each other and one train starts to move, a person sitting in the train may wonder whether his own train is moving or the other is moving, and before he finds out what is happening, he can see that one train is moving relative to the other. From this and also from other more complicated facts, Einstein came to the conclusion that all motion is relative and that there is really no such thing as absolute motion. Some of the other conclusions he drew are that nothing can go faster than light, and that if something such as a ruler was moving faster and faster it would seem to get shorter and shorter as its speed was near the speed of light. By 1915, Einstein had made known his General Theory of Relativity. He also improved on Newton’s theory of gravity. Most o f his theories have been tested and found to be true though some may sound strange. For his important work he was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics. Towards the end of his life, Einstein was asked by a group of students to explain his complicated Theory of Relativity. He said, “When you sit with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute; but when you sit on a hot stove for a minute, it seems like an hour. That is relativity.” Comprehension Questions:
