Part 5 Reading Comprehension (20%)

Directions: Read the following passages carefully and choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.

Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.

The years from 14 until the early 20s are for becoming an adult and for separating from parents. This is the time when a son develops a life that is quite separate from the family.

He has teachers you hardly know, experiences you have never heard about, and challenges that you cannot help him with. There have to be others to act as a bridge, and this is what mentors (良师益友) do.

We should not leave youngsters in a group of friends at this age without adult care. But a mentor is more than a teacher. A mentor is special to the child and the child is special to the mentor.

Teenagers suffer badly if their parents have fewer friends. I know this from experience. When my parents moved to Australia, they were already shy people and became even less willing to meet people once we were there. They never found a group or friendship circle into which we teenagers could enter bit by bit. As a result, when my sister and I hit the middle of the teen years, we had to break out into the big world all of a sudden.

If there are no mentors around, a young man will fall into a lot of troubles in growing up. Teenagers at this age have so many either—or choices and decisions—about sex, job choices, or drugs and alcohol.

If Mom and Dad keep spending time with them, teenagers will talk to them about these things. But there will be a need to talk to other adults, too.

One study showed that just one good adult friend outside the family was a "good anchor" for the teenager.

The worst thing we can do with teenagers is to leave them alone. This is why we need the help of really great teachers and youth workers at this age.

51.

A boy separates himself from his family ________.

A. by the middle of the teens

B. at 20

C. after 20

D. from 14 until the early 20s

D. the mother

A. their parents had lots of friends

B. their parents had few friends

C. their parents did not allow them to choose their mentors by themselves

D. their parents went to live in Australia without them

54.

A. disturb

B. destroy

C. enter

D. open

55.

Which of the following sentences is True according to the passage?

A. Parents should let teenagers choose their mentors themselves.

B. Those in the middle teens are fully ready for the outside world.

C. Spending time with teenagers may keep them away from bad things such as drugs and alcohol.

D. Teenagers suffer only when they have no mentors.

Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage.

Surely the most interesting part of Pamplona's San Fermin Festival (旁普罗纳的圣佛明节) is its focus on danger and death. Why would so many people, over hundreds of years, take part in something everyone fears?

The American writer Ernest Hemmingway explores this very question in his 1926 novel, The Sun Also Rises. The main characters, who begin to feel empty living in modern Paris, travel to Spain, and join in the San Fermin Festival. There, they see death through Spanish eyes.

By joining in the events of this colorful celebration, they begin to understand how the Spanish, in celebrating death, are actually celebrating life. Through the images of the black bull (公牛)and the bullfighter's blood-red cloth, they discover that the Spanish find meaning in life by worshipping(崇拜)heroic death. With people running for their lives, and bullfighters dancing with the bulls, life and death come together at the San Fermin Festival.

First, imagine yourself, along with thousands of others, running for your life towards a bullring (斗牛场) 852 meters ahead! You hear the heavy breath of 600-kilogram bulls running alongside you and feel their power and strange beauty. You are part of a noisy crowd, experiencing something that is more like a dream than reality.

Although all this might seem like a scene from a Hollywood action movie, it is not. It describes what has become known as "the running of the bulls", the most famous part of the Spanish celebration known as San Fermin.

When he was a child, John Andrews had to wear glasses, so his parents suggested that he be an optician. They believed that he could help other people with their eyes as other people had helped him with his. John agreed and started a course of training.

He found it interesting and did not have any trouble in qualifying at the end of the course. The next problem was to find a job. It didn't take long though, and he soon got one in an optician's shop.

The first time John tested a customer's eyes, the owner of the shop watched carefully to make sure he knew what to do, and he was very satisfied with everything that John did, except that John did not know anything about prices. "We'll discuss that at lunchtime," he said quietly.

While John was studying at college, he had read articles about the government's accusation (指责) that opticians were charging (要价) far too much. The government had been threatening (威胁) to bring in laws to control the prices. It was a very important issue, so John was curious.

At lunchtime, the owner said, "Now we'd better have a chat. In this shop we expect everyone to

pay a fair price for what he or she gets, so when you have tested someone's eyes, and they have chosen the kind of lenses (镜片) and frames (架子), and they would like to know how much they will cost, you should say, for example, '$54'. While you are saying this, you should watch the customer's face carefully, and if he or she does not seem frightened by this price, you should add, 'That is the price of the frame. The lenses cost $54 more.' If the customer still does not look as if he or she is worried, you should add, 'For each lens.'"

成人本科英语考试试题及答案解析(二十) 一、Reading Comprehension (共14小题,共30.0分)There are serval passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Almost every family buys at least one copy of a newspaper every day. Some people subscribe(订阅) to as many as two or three newspapers. But why do people read newspapers? Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings - battles lost and won, kings or rulers overthrown(推翻)or killed took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by word of mouth and was never accurate. Today we can read in our newspapers of important events that occur in far away countries on the some day they happen. Apart from supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories and, of course, advertisements. (76) The bigger ones are put in by large companies to bring attention to their products.
