https://www.360docs.net/doc/de2087216.html,wn tennis is a good sport, being based on the ancient game of court tennis, which probably came up in Egypt or Persia some 2,500 years ago. Major Walter Wingfield thought that something like court tennis could be played outdoors on lawns, and in December 1873, he introduced his new game, which he called Sphairistike, at a Lawn party in Wales. The sport became popular very rapidly, but the strange, difficult name disappeared almost at once, being replaced by the very simple and logical term "lawn tennis".

By 1874 the game was being played by British soldiers in Bermuda, and in the early months of that year a young lady named Mary Outerbridge returned from Bermuda to New York, bringing with her the equipment necessary to play the new game. With the help of one of her brothers, she laid out a court on the grounds of the Staten Island Cricket and Baseball Club, and there, in the spring of 1874, Miss Outerbridge and some of her friends played the first game of lawn tennis in the United

5.Public goods are those commodities from whose enjoyment nobody can be effectively excluded.Everybody is free to enjoy the benefits of these commodities, and one person’s utilization does not reduce the possibilities of anybody else’s enjoying the same good.

Examples of public goods are not as rare as one might expect.A flood control dam is a public good.Once the dam is built, all persons living in the area will benefit not thinking the respective of their own contribution to the construction cost of the dam.The same holds true for highway signs or aids to navigation.Once a lighthouse is built, no ship of any nationality can be effectively excluded from the utilization of the lighthouse for navigational purposes.National defense is another example.Even a person who voted against military expenditures or did not pay any taxes will benefit

from the protection afforded.

It is no easy task to determine the social costs and social benefits associated with a public good. There is no practicable way of charging drivers for looking at highway signs, sailors for watching a lighthouse, and citizens for the security provided to them through national defense.Because the market does not provide the necessary signals, economic analysis has to be substituted for the impersonal judgment of the marketplace.

6.It seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But actually the umbrella was not invented as protection against rain. Its first use was as a shade against the sun!

Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient

times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, as early as the eleventh century B.C.

We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use: it became a symbol of honour and authority. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by royalty or by those in high office.

In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece. But it is believed that the first persons in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans.

During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late 16th century. And again it was considered a symbol of power and authority. By 1680, the umbrella appeared in France, and later on in England.

By the eighteenth century, the umbrella was used against rain throughout most of Europe. Umbrella have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It wasn't until the twentieth century that women's umbrellas began to be made, in a whole variety of colours.

7.The strange close understanding between twins is a familiar enough phenomenon. Often they seem to understand each other and share each other’s emotions to such an extent that one suspects some kind of thought communication.

What is not so widely known is that this special relationship often acts as a brake on twins’ intellectual development. As they are partly isolated in their own private world, twins communicate less with adults than do other children. The verbal ability of a four-year-old twin is typically 6 months behind that of a non-twin. The problem can be particularly severe in an underprivileged family – a one-parent family for example – where there is little stimulation for children anyway.

Such children, while capable of mutual comprehension in a private language, often remain incomprehensible to outsiders and are thus at severe educational disadvantage. The only solution to the problem, cruel though it may seem, is to separate the twins thus forcing them to acquire ordinary speech helped and guided by sympathetic parents and teachers.

1)Many people don’t know that _____.

A.twins understand each other to talk

B.twins are slow to learn to talk

C.twins are unlikely to do less well at school than other children

D.there exists thought communication between twins

3)The author probably feels that the twins’ problems ______.

8.The environment affects the way people interact. To examine this conclusion, two researchers"decorated" three rooms. One room was refurnished to look ugly. The second room was intended to look average. The third room was designed to be beautiful. Individuals were then asked to sit in one of the three rooms and rate several pictures of people's faces. The results indicated that the environment has a significant effect on the way people rated the faces.Subjects in the beautiful room gave the pictures higher rates than did subjects in the ugly room. In addition, subjects in the ugly room found the task more unpleasant and boring than did subjects in the beautiful room. Subjects assigned to the ugly room attempted to leave sooner than did subjects assigned to the beautiful room.

Color is one environmental factor that can affect your mood and even your ability to concentrate. One researcher concluded that the most pleasant colors, listed in order of preference, were blue, green, purple, red and yellow. The colors listed from most to least arousing were red, orange, yellow, violet, blue, and green.

Lighting also affects behavior. Elegant restaurants with dim lighting create a mood of intimacy(亲密) that encourages conversation. The bright lights of an office or classroom, on the other hand, arouse and stimulate thinking.

Room decoration, color, lighting, and even music and temperature all influence communication with others;but there is no all-purpose environment. The ideal environment depends on the task that will be performed as well as on the needs and expectations of those present. The same environmental factors that encourage lively conversation and dancing at a New Year's Eve party cannot be expected to create

9.Generations of Americans have been brought up to believe that a good breakfast is essential to one’s life. Eating breakfast at the start of the day, we have been told, and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip. But for many people, the thought of food as the first thing in the morning is never a pleasure. So despite all the efforts, they still take no breakfast.

Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures could be obtained, the number of people who didn’t have breakfast increased by 33%--from 8.8 million to 11.7 million—according to the Chicago-based Market Research corporation of America. For those who dislike eating breakfast, however, there is some good news. Several studies in the last few years have shown that, for adults especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting breakfast. “Going without breakfast does not affect work,” said Arnold E. Bender, former professor of nutrition at Queen Elizabeth College in London,“nor does giving people breakfast improve work.”Scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better work is surprisingly inadequate, and most of the recent work involves children, not adults. “The literature,” says one researcher, Dr. Earnest Polite at the University of Texas, “is poor.”

1)The main idea of the passage is that _______.

[专升本类试卷]专升本英语(阅读)模拟试卷5 一、Part III Reading Comprehension Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. 0 On a rainy day, you will see many streams of muddy(多泥的)water running down the slopes(斜坡)of a hill. The water is muddy because it washes away soil from the hill slopes. Sometimes soil is blown away by strong winds. When the soil is carried away by water or wind, we say that the land is eroded(侵蚀). This is known as soil erosion. Plants cannot grow on eroded land. There is not enough soil on eroded land to give them the things they need. Plants need water and salts from the soil. We can do a number of things to stop soil erosion. This is called soil conservation(保护). One way of soil conservation on flat, open ground is to grow small plants such as grasses. Their roots hold the soil tightly together. Another way is to plant trees around an open field. Thus soil erosion by strong winds cannot take place. Rows of trees act as a very big wall. Soil erosion on slopes can be stopped by cutting "steps" called terraces(梯田). Water carrying soil cannot run straight down the slope now. It has to run down the terraces. This slows down the flow(流速)of the water. Most of the soil in the water is left behind on the terraces. There are some other ways for soil conservation. 1 On a rainy day the water running down the slopes of a hill is muddy because______ . (A)there are no terraces on the slopes (B)there are no small plants on the slopes (C)it washes away soil from the slopes
