IV. 阅读理解(共20小题,满分40分)

阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项中选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war? War is an ancient practice which has existed(存在) for at least six thousand years. It was always bad and usually foolish, but in the past, the human race managed to live with it. Modern cleverness has changed this. Either Man will end the existence of war, or war will end the existence of Man. For the present, it is nuclear weapons(核武器) that cause the most serious danger, but bacteriological or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. If we succeeded in ending the existence of nuclear weapons, our work will not be done. It will never be done until we have succeeded in ending war. To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international problems in a new way not as contests of force, in which the victory goes to the side which is most skilful in killing people, but by settling in accordance with(按照) agreed rules of law. It is not easy to change very old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted.

There are those who say that the acceptance of this or that ideology(意识形态) would prevent war. I believe this to be a big mistake. All ideologies are based upon dogmatic statements(强

词夺理) which are, at best, doubtful, and at worst, totally false. Their supporters believe in them so deeply that they are willing to go to war in support of them.

The movement of world opinion during the past few years has been very largely such as we can welcome. It has become a commonplace that nuclear war must be avoided. Of course very difficult problems remain in the world, but the spirit in which they are coming nearer to is a better one than it was some years ago. It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that negotiations(谈判) should reach agreements even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important struggle nowadays is not between different countries but between Man and the atom bomb.

56. This passage implies that war is now _______.

A. worse than in the past

B. as bad as in the past

C. not so dangerous as in the past

D. as necessary as in the past

57. In the sentence “To do this, we need to persuade mankind…”(Paragraph 1), “this”refers to

________.

A. to end the existence of war

B. to improve weapons

C. to solve international problems

D. to live a peaceful life

58. From Paragraph 2 we learn that the writer of the passage ________.

A. is a supporter of some modern ideologies

B. does not think that the acceptance of any ideologies could prevent war

C. believes that the acception of some ideologies could prevent war

D. does not doubt the truth of any ideologies

59. According to the writer, _______.

A. war is the only way to solve international arguments

B. war will be less dangerous because of the improvement of weapons

C. it is impossible for people to live without war

D. war must be ended if Man wants to survive(生存)

60. The last paragraph suggests that _______.

A. international agreements can be reached more easily now

B. Man begins to realize the danger of nuclear war

C. nuclear war will surely not take place

D. world opinion welcomes nuclear war

B

When I come across a good essay in reading newspapers, I often feel like cutting and keep it. But just as I am about to do so I find the article on the opposite side is as much interesting. It may be a discussion of the way to keep in good health, or advice about how to be oneself in society. If I cut the front essay(文章), the opposite one is bound to suffer damage, leaving out half of it or keeping the text without the subject. As a result, the scissors(剪刀) would stay before they start, or halfway done when I find out the result that inevitably(不可避免的) causes my regret. Sometimes two things are to be done at the same time, both worthy of your attention. You can only take up one of them, the other has to wait or be given up. But you know the future unpredictable---the changed situation may not allow you to do what is left

behind. Thus you are caught in a fix and feel sad. How come that nice opportunities(机会) and brilliant ideas should gather around all at once? It may happen that your life changes dramatically on your preference(偏爱) of one choice to the other.

In fact that is what life is like: we are often faced with the two opposite sides of a thing which are both desirable(合乎需要的) like newspaper cutting. It often occurs that our attention is drawn to one thing only after we take up another. The former may be more important than the latter and give rise to a divided mind. I still remember a philosopher’s(哲学家) remarks: “When one door shuts, another opens in life.”So a passive choice may not be a bad one.

Whatever we do in our lifetime, wher ever life’s storm makes us go, there must be something we can achieve, some shore we can land on. Don’t forget God always keeps an alternative door open for every one. While the front door is closed, there must be another open door for you.

61. The main idea of the passage is ________.

A. where there’s a will, there’s a way

B. cutting newspapers gives us a lesson

C. all roads lead to Rome

D. an equal chance is provided for every one

62. After reading the passage, we may know the writer is a person of________.

A. observation

B. curiosity

C. encouragement

D. consideration

63. The word “fix” in “you are caught in a fix” in paragraph 2 refers to ________.

A. difficult situation

B. your preference of one choice

C. what is left behind

D. two things are to be done at the same time

64. The underlined part in the passage tells us ________.

A. life is like cutting newspapers

B. we can’t kill two birds with one stone

C. life sometimes changes completely

D. it is often difficult to make a choice in our life

65. Which of the statements below is true to the passage?

A. Cutting newspapers is a hard job.

B. When you are caught in a fix, you have met two good things.

C. There must be a way that is better than the other.

D. You should maintain a positive attitude(积极的态度) towards your choice.

C

The past fifty years or so have seen the gradual disappearing of animals from this earth, fishes from the sea, trees and plants from the land.

Many factors(因素) result in this unpleasant phenomenon(现象). Among them, hunting is the main factor that endangers wild life. Some people kill wild life for sport. They take pleasure in collecting heads and hides. Yet others specialize in commercial hunting like killing whales. Apart from this, the rapidly growing human population threatens(威胁) wild life on land, too Towns expand and roads have to be built, so forests are burnt and trees are cut down. It seems that man needs every inch of land within his reach, so he moves on to the natural habitat of wild life. Tigers, lions and leopards slowly die off without the food and shelter that the forests provide.

In addition, rapid urbanization(城市化) means industrial expansion. Very often, poisonous chemicals, industrial wastes and oil are dumped into the rivers and seas. Fish and birds are threatened.

Man depends greatly on animals for survival. He needs their flesh, hides and furs. Thus, man cannot do without wild life; or he himself would become extinct(绝种的). The public should be

made aware that it would be better to shoot the animals with a camera than with a gun. In this way, they can preserve and help wild life to continue living rather than to remove all signs of it. Man must learn to farm the sea as he does the land. He should control the amount and the frequency of his catch. He should allow fish to breed and multiply(繁殖) before netting them. Man also needs to build forest reserves, and to pass laws to stop the killing of animals, especially those that are already rare. To keep the present animal kingdom, the least that man can do is to clean the seas and to prevent pollution.

The cycle of nature is such that it forms a vicious circle(恶性循环). The insecticides and pesticides(杀虫剂) that we spray on crops can kill the birds and animals that feed on them. When man eats these poisoned animals, he himself can die. We must therefore test the chemicals to be used before they are sprayed or it might mean the death of man!

66. The author’s purpose in writing the passage is to _______.

A. explain how important wild life is to human beings

B. call people’s attention to serious problem of pollution

C. explain relationship between wild life and human beings

D. call people’s attention to the protection of wild life

67. It is implied that ________.

A. hunting should not be permitted in order to protect wildlife

B. man needs land more than wild life does

C. if wild life disappears, so will man

D. man has little knowledge of sea farming

68. The last paragraph is mainly about ________.

A. the importance of wild life to human beings

B. how the circle of nature is formed

C. how animals are gradually disappearing from the earth

D. how to solve the problem of pollution

D

We spent a day in the country, picking wild flowers. With the car full of flowers we were going home. On our way back my wife noticed a cupboard outside a furniture shop. It was tall and narrow. “Buy it,” my wife said at once. “We’ll carry it home on the roof rack(行李架). I’ve always wanted one like that.”

What could I do? Ten minutes later I was 20 pounds poorer; and the cupboard was tied on to the roof rack. It was six long and eighteen inches square, quite heavy too.

In the gathering darkness I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed unusually polite that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.

After a time my wife said, “There’s a long line of cars behind. Why don’t they overtake, I wonder?”

In fact a police car did overtake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously as they passed. But then, with great kindness, they led us through the rush-hour traffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One of the officers came to me.

“Right, sir,” he said. “Do you need any more help?”

I was a bit puzzled. “Thanks, officer,” I said. “You have been very kind. I live jus t on the road.”

He was staring at our car; first at the flowers, then at the cupboard. “Well, well,” he said, laughing. “It’s a cupboard you’ve got there! We thought it was something else.”

My wife began to laugh. Then the truth hit me like a stone between the eyes. I smiled at the officer. “Yes, It’s a cupboard, but thanks again.” I drove home as fast as I could.

69. It can be inferred from the passage that _________.

A. other drivers kindly let the couple go first, because the husband drove not fast.

B. the cupboard cost less than 20 pounds

C. all the cars followed the couple’s

D. the husband, in fact, would rather not buy the cupboard

A. It was so expensive that it needed their help.

B. It was a big box with some bomb in it.

C. It was a box for a dead person to be buried in.

72. What did the husband think of this matter?

E

Have you ever been at a meeting while someone was making a speech and realized suddenly that your mind was a million miles away? You probably felt sorry and made up your mind to pay attention and always have been told that daydreaming is a waste of time.

“On the contrary,”says L.Giambra, an expert in psychology, “daydreaming is quite necessary. Without it, the mind couldn’t get done all the thinking it has to do during a normal day. You can’t possibly do all your thinking with a conscious(有意识) mind. Instead, your unconscious mind is working out problems all the time. Daydreaming then may be one way that the unconscious and conscious states of mind have silent dialogues.”

Early experts in psychology paid no attention to the importance of daydreams or even considered them harmful. At one time daydreaming was thought to be a cause of some mental illnesses. They did not have a better understanding of daydreams until the late 1980s. Eric Klinger, a professor of psychology, is the writer of the book Daydreaming. Klinger says, “We know now that daydreaming is one of the main ways that we organize our lives, learn from our experiences, and plan for our futures. Daydreams really are a window on the things we fear and the things we long for in life.”

Daydreams are usually very simple and direct, quite unlike sleep dreams, which may be hard to understand. It’s easier to gain a deep understanding of your life by paying close attention to your daydreams than by trying to examine your sleep dreams carefully. Daydreams help you recognize the difficult situations in your life and find out a possible way of dealing with them. Daydreams cannot be predicated(预料). They move off in unexpected directions which may be creative and full of ideas. For many famous artists and scientists, daydreams were and are a

main source of creative energy.

73. The writer of this passage considers daydreams __________.

A. hard to understand

B. important and helpful

C. harmful and unimportant

D. the same as sleep dreams

74. The writer quoted(引用) L. Giambra and Eric Klinger to ________.

A. point out the wrong ideas of early experts

B. list two different ideas

C. support his own idea

D. report the latest research on daydreams

75. What is the main difference between daydreams and sleep dreams?

A. People have daydreams and sleep dreams at different times.

B. Daydreams are the result of unconscious mind while sleep dreams are that of conscious mind.

C. Daydreams are more harmful.

D. Daydreams are more helpful in solving problems.

VI、书面表达(满分25分)

A Ten-minute Break

As a Senior Three student, time seems much limited. As a result, more and more students try to study from early morning till late afternoon, even during the ten-minute break. In my opinion, to take a ten-minute break between classes is definitely necessary. Otherwise we will feel tired both physically and mentally.

During the ten-minute break, we do something to get rid of tiredness. What we need is to have a real rest, instead of getting more tired. So doing nothing tiring in that period is really good for us.

My ten-minute break is always pleasing. Sometimes I do some simple exercises. Sometimes I have a free chat with my classmates or just take a walk outside. When the next class begins, I feel fresh again.
