An old woman had two large pots (罐), one on each end of a

In UK schools, there is an old tradition of putting older students

in charge of younger students outside of the classroom. This is called

the prefect system (级长制度). If you read Harry Potter, you might

have heard of prefects. At Hogwarts, prefects can take points away at

Quidditch games(魁地奇球赛,出自《哈利·波特》系列故事)and

walk up and down the dorm (宿舍) halls to make sure that no one is

out at night.

The prefect system in the UK is as old as school itself. In the past, prefects at boarding schools were known for being very cruel. They hit younger students with sticks and often treated them as personal slaves (奴隶). Prefects had to make sure that younger students behaved in the dorms, but they could carry out the rules in any way they pleased.

Because of prefects’ bad reputations (名声), most UK schools have decided to end the prefect system. Even today, many parents remember how they had to clean the shoes of, and wash the floors for their cruel prefects.

US sch ools don’t have prefects. They like to choose a class president over prefects – just as the US once chose a president over a king.

However, prefects nowadays are more similar to Chinese classroom monitors than to slave masters. Teachers choose prefects for their leadership, good behavior and high grades –and prefects can’t punish other students. It is an honor to be a prefect, and students take their jobs very seriously.

Top student Lin Yijian had a problem recently. The

14-year-old from Xiamen used to get marks of over 110 points

(out of 120 possible points) on his math tests. But during last

semester’s final exams, his math score was only 90 points.

It was a shock. “I didn’t know what happened,” said Lin, who

kept feeling nervous and frustrated (沮丧的) about math during

the following month.

Feeling worried, Chen decided to do something. She did sit-ups for half an hour every day after school. Now, after a month, she can do 30 sit-ups a minute.

One morning my cats were making so much noise that I

couldn’t think, let alone hear. I went outside to see what had upset

my feline(猫科的) family, and I was surprised at what I found. I

looked down and saw a plastic bag. In the bag were five newborn

slightly, was flat. I was told that most vets suggest putting cases(病例) like his down. But I asked if Zeph would be able to have a good life. The vet said she didn’t know. She had never seen a case like Zeph’s. So I decided to let little Zeph live. The vet said she thought he would make it to one year old, and he would never be able to walk or play.
