It was one summer many years ago when an army of crickets had a war with my father. Dad didn’t care for insects much more than Mamma, but he could tolerate a few living in the basement. Mamma was a city girl and she said a cricket (蟋蟀)was just too noisy. Then to support her point she wouldn’t

go to bed. She drank coffee and smoked my father’s cigarettes and paced between the sofa and the TV. Next morning she threatened to pack up and leave, so Dad drove to the store and hurried back. He sprayed poison from a jug. When he was finished he told us that was the end of it.

For a couple of weeks we went back to find dead crickets in the laundry. He suggested that we’d all be better off to hide as many as we could from Mamma. I fed a few dozen to the cat who I didn’t like because he scratched for no reason.

However, soon live crickets started showing up in the kitchen and bathroom. Mamma was upset because she thought they were the dead crickets coming back, but Dad said these were certainly new ones. He fetched his jug of poison and sprayed all over until the whole house smelled of poison, and then he sprayed the basement again.

A couple of weeks later, when both live and dead crickets kept turning up, Dad emptied the basement of junk. Then he burned a lot of old newspapers and magazines which he said the crickets had turned into nests.

While we ate supper that evening, the wind lifted some flames onto the wood pile. The only gasoline was in the lawn mower’s(割草机) fuel tank but that was enough to create an

explosion big enough to reach the house. Once the roof caught, there wasn’t much anyone could do.

After the fire trucks left, Mamma took the others to Aunt Gail’s. I helped Dad and Uncle Burt carry things out of the house and pile them by the road. We worked into the night and we didn’t talk much, while all around the noise of crickets broke our silence.

Doesn’t it sound crazy? Fans are so excited as Justin Bieber is scheduled to perform at a stadium in Dubai, the capital city of UAE on May 4. In less than 36 hours all the tickets available were sold out.

If you have a teenager lying under your roof, it’s likely that she has spent your hardearned cash on some concert tickets. Clare Smart, a researcher on teenage development in Dubai, has some idea about the pop p henomenon. “Justin Bieber is a teenager himself and therefore teenagers feel a connection to him, in the songs that he sings, his hairstyle and how he dresses. He represents what many teenagers would like for themselves, such as the latest clothing trends, exciting travel and high earnings. What’s more, it gives teenagers the feeling of being part of a group and a shared experience with other teenagers who have the same interest in a particular celebrity…”says Smart.

It’s easy to be sheltering as a parent and it’s a good

idea to talk to your teenagers about their idols, find out what they like about them and why. “You could accompany your teenagers to a concert or listen along to the latest song in the car with them, ”suggests Smart. “This shows that you are interested in the things they consider to be important.’’Sometimes, however, a normal level of interest slips into an obsession(痴迷)and then it becomes a cause for concern. It is now considered a personality disorder, which is closely related to higher levels of depression, anxiety and stress. In practice, teenagers who are overly obsessed with stars often have damaged relationships with their parents.

The good news, however, is that there is plenty that parents can do to prevent their teenagers from becoming overly obsessed with those so called celebrities. Let them know what their real life is like behind the story, and they can see these celebrities in a new angle.

35. What does the first paragraph intend to tell the reader?

A. How expensive the concert tickets are.

B. Why teenagers love music concerts.

C. What idols teenagers admire.

D. How popular Justin Bieber is.

36. According to Para 2, teenagers can get from

worshiping an idol.

A. a sense of belonging

B. an easier way to become famous

C. a knowledge of pop culture

D. a closer relationship with parents

37. What does Clare Smart tell us in Para 3?

A. Teenagers and parents often have a tense relationship.

B. Parents always have the same interests as the teenagers.

C. Parents should understand and protect the teenagers.

D. Celebrity worship exist among different age groups.

38. If teenagers are overly obsessed with celebrities, they .

A. often see themselves as a particular celebrity

B. will establish a connection with their idols

C. actually suffer from a personality disorder

D. always care too much about their friends

It is well-known that priceless undiscovered treasures and antiques may lie a mere 30 feet below the surface in Rome. Therefore, building an underground subway in the city of Rome is no easy work. The dilemma is how to build one

without disturbing any artifact(古器物) that may lie buried and undiscovered below its large roads and streets.

Compared to other European capitals, Rome’s subway is far less developed. For years, Rome’s 2.8 million citizens relied only on two subway lines that fell short of meeting the people’s transportation needs. Being one of the oldest cities in the world, it faces some problems in constructing a new subway line such as the shortage of money, but especially protecting the underground treasures.

During the construction of the first two subway lines in the 1950’s, each excavation exposed archaeological remains and the construction had to be stopped to allow the local archaeologists to check them to see whether the discovery proved valuable to the history of the Romans.

After years of debate, the construction of a third subway line was agreed on. Now that the third subway line is under construction, it has been marked as an "archaeological survey" from the very beginning and great care is being taken. This new line will run through the very heart of the ancient city. It will be 24 kilometers in length and 25 to 30 meters below ground.

Archaeologists are working together with construction workers to excavate beneath Rome’s center. Almost immediately, excavation revealed some great finds. Just below the surface, excavators discovered building remains that were torn down in the late 19th century. They dug one layer deeper, which exposed a 10th century’s road that once crossed the city, and one layer below it, they discovered a sidewalk from the 8th century. Near the ancient Forum, workers discovered a 6th century’s copper factory. The early factory consisted of six small ovens used to work on copper alloys. Small copper masses discovered at the scene were sent for analysis. The workers also found the base of an imperial Rome public building.

There isn’t an inch of Rome that doesn’t have any artifacts below. Like their ancestors, today’s Romans have found a way to protect the old while creating the new.

39. What is the main difficulty Romans face when building a third subway line?

A. How to get the money needed to construct it.

B. How to protect the buried artifacts.

C. How to make it popular with tourists.

D. How to bring in new technology to construct it.

40. Why is a third subway line expected to be built in Rome

City according to the passage?

A. Because its present subway lines fail to meet people’s needs for transportation.

B. Because it is the foundation of developing Rome’s economy.

C. Because its officials expect to discover valuable treasures while building it.

D. Because its citizens prefer subway lines to other transportation forms.

41. We can infer from the passage that the building of the

third subway line .

A. will be impossible because Romans want to protect their artifacts

B. is not difficult because of the government’s support

C. was opposed by some people at first

D. was considered an easy thing

42. Which is the best title for this passage?

A. Roman Archaeologists’Research on Art ifacts.

B. The Reason Why Romans Want to Build a Third Subway Line.

C. Large Findings in Rome During the Process of Building Subway.

D. The Protection of the Artifacts in the Construction of a New Subway.

It’s not just adults who have a thing or two t o discuss with other people, babies too have their own social lives and enjoy group interaction, according to a world-first study.

The breakthrough study conducted by psychologist Professor Ben Bradley, at Charles Sturt University, could completely transform the way child-care centres are set up. In their study, the researchers examined groups of nine-month-old babies in New South Wales and Britain.

And they came across surprising results. It was found that infants had “social brains” and focused no t just on their mothers but on social life in groups as well.

“They communicate with more than one baby at once, and show jealousy and generousness,” said Professor Bradley.

He added, “They develop their own meanings through group interaction, they notice if a group member is behaving differently and they take on roles, such as leaders and followers.”“A baby who has a depressed mother tends to be

withdrawn ( 内向的), but put that same baby in a group of its peers and they behave and interact like an y other baby.”

It was the first all-baby group study ever to be conducted. “Most studies of babies concentrate on the infant-mother relationship, assuming that is the single foundation for mental health, but babies are constantly involved with groups of people other than their mothers, fathers, siblings, grandparents and those taking care. Therefore, the mother-baby approach needs to be combined with a group approach,” said Bradley.

Phoebe Christison, a child-care worker at Camperdown Sunshine Bubs in Sydney’s inner west, said she often noticed what appeared to be emotional attachments developed between toddlers.

She said, “Joel ( 10 months ) and Isabella ( 11months ) always like to hold hands when they sit in their high chairs and eat. And babies definitely show jealousy. They push and touch each other, and copy what the other is doing.”

43. Which of the following statements about the study is TRUE?

A. It divides babies according to their personalities.

B. It’s the first study to look at all-baby groups.

C. Its aim is to change the way of child care.

D. Its results are hard to believe.

44. A baby who has a depressed mother .

A. also enjoys group interaction

B. tends to be a follower

C. pays more attention to its mother

D. has poor social ability

45. What can be inferred from the result of this study?

A. There’s no need of child-care centers at all.

B. Babies are affected by groups more than by their mothers.

C. Adults should include babies when having social activities.

D. The normal infant-mother bond alone isn’t enough for

the good mental health for babies.

46. The underlined word “toddlers” in Paragraph 8 can be replaced by .

A. adults

B. groups

C. peers

D. infants

Why does eating raw foods or whole foods become more and more popular nowadays? One reason is that eating these

types of food reduces the risk of acid accumulation in your body.

Raw and whole foods are usually digested more efficiently than cooked and refined foods. When we cook foods, we destroy the natural enzymes(酶)that are part of the food in its raw form. These enzymes were intended by nature to help us digest the food. When we consume food without these natural enzymes, our bodies either digest the food improperly or allow too many nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream. In both instances, the result is obesity. When too many nutrients are absorbed at once, the body grows fat. Improperly digested food moves slowly through the digestive system, where it becomes increasingly acidic(酸性的). To protect its vital organs from this acidic waste, the body changes the acid into fat and stores it safely away from the organs.

Processed foods contain chemical elements, which might confuse the appetite mechanism(机制) that tells us when we’ve had enough to eat; as a result, people often overeat . Processed foods also upset the digestive cycle. The body will either identify these foods as allergies and then store them safely away from the organs as fat, or the remains of

undigested food will become acidic and enter the bloodstream as acid waste, which will stick to the blood vessel walls and block the passage of vital oxygen and nutrients heading for the body’s cells. The body’s metabolism(新陈代谢) becomes inactive, and then result is weight gain and obesity.

The accumulation of acid in the digestive system makes digestion increasingly inefficient. When that happens, even healthy foods can become acidic and the food allergies will become more common.

To stop this, people need to consume food that will neutralize the acid already accumulated in body. Eating the right types of raw and whole foods can help. it’s also impor tant to restore your enzyme balance. You need to identify and avoid the foods that cause acid accumulation and consume the foods that increase enzyme production. If you truly want to change and help your body heal itself , you need to take an active approach.47. What is the main purpose of this passage?

A. To inform people of the harm of processed foods

B. To tell the differences between raw and processed foods

C. To advise people to eat more raw and whole foods

D. To warn people of the problem of obesity

48. It can be inferred from the second paragraph that .

A. foods with natural enzymes help people keep fit

B. it is essential for people to protect their vital organs

C. we’d better be cautious about raw and whole foods

D. giving up cooked and refined foods is a new lifestyle

49. What is likely to be talked about following the last paragraph?

A. Active approaches to avoid acid.

B. Suitable types of raw and whole foods.

C. Correct ways to cook raw foods.

D. Different causes of acid accumulation.

50. What can we learn from the text?

A. Processed foods are good for our appetite mechanism.

B. Processed foods also comfort the digestive system.

C. The accumulation of acid in the digestive tract makes digestion more effective.

D. Eating the right types of raw and whole foods does good to our body.
