A

A store that sells husbands has just opened in Ottawa where a woman may go to choose a husband from many men.

The store is comprised of 6 floors and the men increase in positive attributes(品质,特点)as the shopper goes up the flights. There is, however, a catch(陷阱). As you open the door to any floor you may choose a man from that floor, but if you go up a floor, you cannot go back down except to exit the building.

So a woman goes to the shopping center to find a husband. On the first floor the sign on the door reads: Floor 1—These men have jobs. The woman reads the sign and says to herself, ―Well, that’s better than my last boyfriend, but I wonder what’s further up?‖

So up she goes. The second floor sign reads: Floor 2—These men have jobs and love kids. The woman remarks to herself, ―That’s great, but I wonder what’s further up?‖

And up she goes again. The third floor sign reads: Floor 3—These men have jobs, love kids and are extremely good-looking. ―Hmm, better.‖

The fourth floor sign reads: Floor 4—These men have jobs, love kids, are extremely good-looking and help with the housework. ―Wow!‖ exclaims the woman, ―Very tempting. But, there must be more, further up!‖

And again she heads up another flight. The fifth floor sign reads: Floor 5—These men have jobs, love kids, are extremely good-looking, help with the housework and have a strong romantic character. ―Oh, mercy me! But just think…what must be awaiting me further on?‖So up to the sixth floor she goes. The sixth floor sign reads: Floor 6 –You are visitor 3, 456, 789,012 to this floor. There are no men on this floor. Thank you for shopping Husband Mart and have a nice day.

21. Women tend to go up the floor until they reach the top floor because _____.

C. they think the husbands downstairs are not suitable

D. they are sure that the best husbands are on the top floor

22. The writer intends us to believe that _____.

A. women think they are better than men

B. husbands are hard to shop

C. women can’t be too careful when choosing husbands

D. women are hard to please

23. We can infer from the passage that _____.

A. women are romantic

B. women are not good at shopping husbands

C. more women will leave the shop alone

D. women are more kind than men

B

They will be here in a minute, surely. I’ll just stare at my shoes a little while longer to pass the time. Wish I’d brought a book. Hang on, though, what if I’ve got the wrong day? The wrong place? Have the clocks g one back? No, damn it, I’m off home. Whoever I’m waiting for clearly lives in a different time zone from me.

I am always 10 minutes early, so if you’re 10 minutes late, I’ve been foot-tapping for 20 minutes. I know it’s not fair to hold the first 10 against you, but I just can’t help myself. I never wait more than 20 minutes beyond the meeting time we decided upon, not for anyone, ever.

OK, that’s not strictly true. I have, on occasion, hung around anxiously and heartbrokenly for up to an hour, but the bi tter anger that follows is never a pretty sight. If you’ve made me wait that long, you will wish you hadn’t bothered turning up at all.

How come some people are always late and some are always on time? If I can manage to be punctual(准时的), why can’t you? B ecause I left a hot cup of coffee at home while you sat down to roll another cigarette. Because I spilled jam on my pants and quickly wiped it off whereas you took time to change your whole outfit. Because I switched off midway through a TV series, but you had to ride out the end, didn’t you? And don’t even think about blaming the traffic. How do you think I got here? By flying carpet? Only carelessness or arrogance (傲慢)can explain a habit of lateness.

Some people are always late because they can’t make re alistic calculations about how long it takes to do things. There are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour. Just deal with it. Painful as it may be, you have to accept that, as you’ve agreed to meet at eight and it’s now a quarter to, you don’t have time to phone your girlfriend.

Much worse, though, are those with big egos(自我). Being late is just rude. Being late on purpose really means that you hate the person you are meeting.

Of course, there are some perfectly lovely latecomers out there. I just never wait long enough to find out.

24. Which of the following words best describes how the author feels in the first paragraph?

C

A scientist turns out to be able to see the future by offering each of four-year-olds a piece of candy and watching how he or she deals with it. Some children reach eagerly for the treat they see. Some last a few minutes before they give in. But others are determined to wait until the last moment.

By the time the children reach high school, something remarkable has happened. A survey found that those who as four-year-olds had enough self-control to hold out generally grew up to be more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable. The children who gave in to temptation(诱惑) early were more likely to be lonely, easily frustrated and inflexible(固守己见的).

Actually, the ability to delay reward is a sign of emotional intelligence which doesn’t show up on an IQ test.

The hardwa re of the brain and the software of the mind have long been scientists’ concerns. But brain theory can’t explain what we wonder about most, like the question why some people remain upbeat in the face of troubles that would sink a less resistant soul.

Here comes the theory of Daniel Goleman, writer of Emotional Intelligence: when it comes to predicting people’s success, brain ability as measured by IQ may actually matter less than the qualities of mind once thought of as ―character‖.

EQ is not the opposite of IQ. What researchers have been trying to understand is how they work together; how one’s ability to handle stress, for instance, affects the ability to concentrate and put intelligence to use. Among the ingredients for success, researchers now generally agree that IQ accounts for about 20%; the rest depends on everything from social class to luck.

While many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues finally taken seriously, some few fear EQ invites misuse.

28. The experiment with the four-year-olds makes it clear that .

A. the age of 4 is a proper time for scientific experiment

B. the ability of self-control plays a role in personal success

C. emotional intelligence won’t show up until adolescence

D. candy can be used to measure a person’s emotional intelligence

29. Which of the following is TRUE of EQ and IQ according to the text?

A. Scientists are trying to discover the way in which EQ and IQ work together.

B. There is no link between EQ and IQ.

C. Th e higher a person’s IQ is, the higher his or her EQ is.

D. Some people can be blessed with lots of both, but some with little of either.

30. The underlined word ―upbeat‖ in Paragraph 4 probably means .

A. kind

B. floating

C. optimistic

D. excited

31. What is most likely to be written in the paragraph that follows?

A. Information about famous people with high EQ.

B. Some reasons why EQ is a relatively new field.

C. Strong demand for basic emotional education.

D. Examples showing the opposite voice about EQ.

D

Many environmentalists and entrepreneurs are looking for ideas on how to ―capture

gold‖ ― that is, how to collect and convert plastic waste into new plastic or fuel.

OK, describing plastic waste as potential ―gold‖ may be overdoing it. But the campaigners say that publicizing the concept that plastic is worth something may help reduce the amount of waste that ends up in oceans and the bellies(肚子) of sea creatures.

To that end, they have set up a competition inviting members of the public to submit ideas online. Organizers will take the best ones to the Rio+20 Earth Summit (峰会) in Rio de Janeiro next month, where they are planning a daylong side event called Plasticity focusing on issues related to plastic pollution.

The plastic waste problem is gaining broader attention as environmentalists, scientists, manufacturers and the public become more aware of the sheer volume of(大量的) the stuff that finds its way into the sea.

More than 260 million metric tons of plastic are now produced per year, according to the trade association PlasticsEurope. The majority of that is not recycled. Most of it ends up in landfill, and a significant amount ends up as litter on land, in rivers and in the oceans.

Technological advances have made clear that it is possible to reuse much of this plastic by turning it into fuel or new products. Yet the companies that have come up with such solutions have not achieved the economies of scale that would allow them to function profitably. Insufficient waste-collection and recycling systems in most countries also stand in the way of ― trash to cash‖ concept, said Doug Woodring, an environmental entrepreneur in Hong Kong who is among the organizer of the Plasticity forum(论坛) in Rio.

Rather than breast-beating, the form aims to highlight some of the technologies and ideas out there for collection and reuse. My personal favorite for now is a vacuum cleaner with plastic parts made from plastic waste.

32. What do the campaigners like to do exactly?

A. To hold a competition on how to deal with environmental pollution.

B. To describe plastic waste as potential ―gold‖.

C. To invite members of the public to their forum.

D. To collect ideas on how to recycle plastic waste.

33. The underlin ed part ―trash to cash‖ most probably means ――.

A. applying modern technology to recycling systems

B. turning plastic waste into fuel or new products

C. collecting sufficient plastic waste for future use

D. establishing many environmental businesses

34. According to Doug Woodring, the companies that want to reuse plastic waste .

A. have collected enough waste to be used

B. have no practical solutions

C. lack technological advances

D. haven’t reached profitable scal e

35. What can be the best title for the text?

A. Earth Summit = Way Out?

B. Waste Recycling = Green Life?

C. Plastic Waste = Great Wealth?

D. New Technology = Little Waste?

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

___36____When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure beats dance into view.

The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. ____37____.

The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. ____38____It included such items as automobiles and new houses.

By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the ―life-enriching‖ level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction-the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body-this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called ―luxury‖ items. Among t hem are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment. ____39____

On this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?

A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice. ____40____In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.

A. Human wants seem endless.

B. Different people have different wants on each level.

C. At this stage, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure.

D. There are several levels of wants in one’s life.

E. Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing.

F. Then a third level appeared.

G. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears
