Passage One

It is now commonly known that AIDS is a deadly disease. It does great damage to human beings’ immune ( 免疫的) system, weakening resistance to disease and leading to death due to utter weakness. To this day, there are no existing drugs that can kill the AIDS virus (病毒). It is a deadly battle between science and AIDS.

This is only one side of the story. Although it cannot be cured, AIDS is preventable. For those who have not caught the disease, the knowledge of preventive measures seems to be the most powerful weapon at hand.

Since the discovery of the first AIDS patient in 1985, the number of HIV carriers (艾滋病毒携带者) is on an alarming rise in China and statistics show that young people are the more likely victims of AIDS. Nationwide there are 214 million peple between the ages 0f 13 and 22, most of whom are students. If no measures are taken to protect these young people, it is almost certain that the threat of AIDS will be very real to them. There has been a great deal of misinformation concerning the transmission (传播) of AIDS.

Passage Two

When I was a junior, I met a second-year stud ent in my department. He wasn’t tall or good-looking, but he was very nice, attractive and athletic. He had something that I admired very much. He was natural, warm, and sincere.

I disregarded (不顾) my parents’ disapproval. We were very happy together. He picked me up from my dorm every morning, and after class we would sit alongside the stream that ran through campus, or sunbathe (晒太阳) on the lawn. At night he would walk me back to my dorm. He came from a poor family, but in order to make me happy, he borrowed money from his friend to buy presents and meals for me. Our fellow students looked up to him as a role model, and the girls envied (妒忌) me. He wasn’t a local, but wanted to stay here after graduation. I thought we had a future together.

However, when I got a part-time job during the summer vacation, people began giving me a lot of pressure, saying that a pretty, intelligent girl like me should find a better guy to spend time with. This was also what my family thought. He spent the summer in his hometown, so I was all by myself. When he got back, I began finding fault with him. But his big heart and warmth soon drove all unpleasant thoughts away. However, I had no idea how badly I had hurt him and that things would get worse.

I had a good part-time job off campus that paid pretty well. With my good performance at school, I also got admission to graduate school at one of China’s best universities. He, on the other hand, did not do so well at school or at work. I had to worry about his living expenses, job and scores.

Almost all my colleagues and friends advised me to break up with him. Then we had a quarrel last June. He was in great pain, and my cold words and bad moods started turning him away.

Graduation time was drawing near, and he said he wanted to go back to his hometown. He said that he couldn't put up with me anymore. I was shocked and looked at him in despair.

True love happens only once, but I found it out too late.

Passage Three

One of the advantages of being self-employed is that the profit the business makes belongs to the owner. If the self-employed person is successful in business, he or she has the chance to earn a great deal of money and even become wealthy. The profit earned by a self-employed person is the reward for his or her effort, ability, and creativity. Thus, a second advantage of being self-employed is that a person's intelligence and abilities have a direct effect on his or her earnings. People who have outstanding abilities or intelligence often find they can earn far more through self-employment than they can through working as an employee. A third advantage of being self-employed is that a person can control both the number of hours worked and the hours of work. While not all self-employed people are completely free to choose whatever hours they want to work, most of them have more control over this area than do the people who for salaries or wages.

As with most things in life, being self-employed is not without problems. First, being one’s own boss places the responsibility for success directly on that individual’s shoulders. Abilities and intelligence will be put to the test. Everyone has some weaknesses and is less capable in some things than in others. These weaknesses will affect how successful a self-employed person is. Second, though the self-employed can earn considerable profits with a successful business, losses can force them out of business and, in some instances, place them in debt. A third disadvantage concerns income security. Self-employed people have no guaranteed wage. Their earnings can vary greatly from year to year, depending on business conditions. Salaried people, on the other hand, can generally count on continued earnings from year to year. In addition, salaried people often enjoy fringe benefits that mean greater peace of mind. Fringe benefits are all of the benefits provided for employees in addition to wages and salaries. One of these benefits may be insurance paid for by the employer that continues the employee’s salary in the event of sickness or accident. Many self-employed people do not have such protection, unless they put money aside themselves.

Of course, it is possible. You can convey your moods and intentions to one another without words, because all human beings share a large number of common visual signals. These signals are as effective as words are during communication. However, in daily life when people talk with others in their native language, they are not aware that they are using these signals to express their thoughts at the same time. These signals are called body language. Paying a little attention to one’s gestures when that person is talking, we can understand more than by only hearing one’s words. Wordless communication acts to qualify the words. The gestures of the head play a key role in body language. The vertical head movements, called nods, signify their agreement. It is very interesting that this gesture has been used by people born deaf and blind. No doubt, it strongly suggests that affirmative nodding may be an inborn action for the human species—a pattern of body language designed by our genes. The movements of eyes and eyebrows are as important as head movements in body Language, but there are many differences among nations in using this pattern of body language. Americans are very subtle about eye movements. During their conversation, eye movements may have several meanings. For instance, people avoid looking into another’s eyes for more than a few seconds because it may be thought of as a sign of disrespect. In England, however, staring at the speaker attentively may be considered as nothing more than a sign of interest. English people also like to blink their eyes occasionally during the conversation as a signal of agreement. Besides the gestures of the head or the movements of the eyes and eyebrows, the action of arms, hands and legs also are a large part of body language. Extending one’s arm and shaking hands with others is a greeting in both formal and informal cases. This part of body language might be traced back to primitive tribes. Early human beings established a major division of labor, with the male hunter leaving the group for some time, then returning home with the kill. Before he left and after he came back body contact was made; This consisted of a total embrace with much hugging, patting, squeezing, and even weeping. After many thousands of years, this kind of greeting has developed into the present customs, such as handshaking—one of the important elements in the modern body language dictionary. Like handshaking, there are still many other forms of body language presented by hands. Raising one’s hand and making a circle with his thumb and forefinger signals that something is OK. Clasped hands raised above the head, a traditional picture adopted by sportsmen after winning a fight, is a display of triumph that grows out of a surge of feeling following a victory. Waving one’s hands permits a speaker to make his words more powerful and vigorous. In addition to hand gestures, there are times when a person says something with his legs as well as with his head and eyes. The leg gestures often reflect one’s attitude towards something or someone that person is with. For example, if you pay a little attention, you will notice that when one is impatient listening to someone, his foot might beat the floor constantly and restlessly, as if it had its own life. In such a case, although he says not a word, in fact his body gesture reveals nearly everything. The same thing will happen when a person sits with someone whom that person dislikes. In this situation not only will his legs move from side to side, but also he will change the way his legs are crossed frequently. These postures reflect one’s uncomfortable feeling. According to the above facts, body language has offered a more reliable way to understand one’s mind by means of gestures. It is just like Sigmund Freud once wrote: “No mortal can keep a secret. If his lips are silent, he talks with his fingertips.” Body language is a communication tool. Like English, French, Spanish, and other languages in the world, though body language is soundless and wordless, once you understand it, you will feel the world is bigger than you realized. 1. When people communicate with each other, the visual signals cannot express their intentions clearly. A. True B. False 2. During communication, people are conscious of body language to understand others more deeply. A. True B. False 3. The gestures of the head are only used by the people born deaf and blind. A. True B. False 4. The movement of eyes and eyebrows are the same in meaning all over the world. A. True B. False 5. In England blink their eyes occasionally to show their agreement.
