One day, my friend Jimmy told me a story. Farmer Joe was in his cart when he was hit by a truck. He decided his injuries from the accident were serious enough to take the trucking company (which caused the ac cident)to court. In court the trucking company’s lawyer was questioning Farmer Joe. “Didn’t you say, at the same scene of the accident, ‘I’m fine’?” said the lawyer.

Farmer Joe responded, “Well, I will tell you what happened. I had just loaded my favorite mule(骡子)Bessie into the…” “I didn’t ask for any details,” the lawyer interrupted, “Just answer the question.Did you not say, at the scene of the accident, ‘I’m fine? ’”

Farmer Joe said, “Well, I had just got Bessie into the cart and I was driving down the road…”

The lawyer interrupted again and said, “Judge, I am trying to make clear the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the police on the scene that he was just fine. Now several weeks after the accident he is trying to cover the fact. I believe he is telling lies. Please tell him to simply answer the question.”

By this time the Judge was fairly interested in Farmer Joe’s answer and said to the lawyer, “I’d like to hear what he has to say about his favorite mule Bessie.”

Joe thanked the Judge and went on, “Well, as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, my favorite mule, into the cart and was driving her down the road when this huge truck ran into the stop sign and pushed my cart right in the side. I was thrown into one side and Bessie was thrown into the other.”

“I was hurt so badly that I didn’t want to move. However, I could hear old Bessie breathing loudly and groaning (呻吟). I knew she was in great pain. Shortly after the accident a traffic policeman came to the scene. He could hear Bessie groaning so he went over to her. After he looked at her, he took out his gun and shot her between the eyes. If you don’t want people to know too much about you, then you had better keep your fridge contents secret according to a British market research document released last week.

Researchers peered (凝视) into the fridges of 400 people in Britain and compared the contents with the owners’ lifestyles.

They say those people can be divided into five categories: nutrition nerds (no social sense), food faddiest (whatever’s in style), martyr mums, fast food fanatics and restaurant regulars.

Nutrition nerds care much about what they put into their bodies. Their fridges are filled with fruit, vegetables and healthy meat.

People in this category tend to be highly organized and usually work in law or accountancy. The vast majority is single, but if they have a partner, that person will be similar.

A fridge full of vitamins-enriched juices implies its owner works in media or fashion.

They tend not to eat the foods they buy. Known as the food faddies, they just want to be seen as purchasing the latest important things.

A fridge full of everything from steak to frozen fish suggests the martyr mum. Her fridge

tends to be stocked with every kind of product, except what she herself would want.

This fridge suggests difficulty balancing family and work life. Fast food fanatics always buy mineral water for soda pop; the nearest they will get to fresh fruit is tomato sauce. Their fridges hint (暗示) at someone who works hard and plays hard. Also, someone who is not into long term planning.

Finally, a fridge filled with nothing more than a bottle of white wine and some sparkling

mineral water implies an owner who is single, lives in a big city and enjoys the finer things in life. The fridge is empty because this person regularly eats in restaurants.

55.We can know from the first two paragraphs that .

A.some r esearchers are fond of staring at other people’s fridges

B.people don’t want others to know about their secrets

C.the food you put in the fridge has something to do with your character

D.there are mainly five kinds of lifestyles among British people

56.According to the passage, people who belong to food faddiest .

A.don’t care much about money when buying things

B.will try their best to stay healthy

C.often stay up late to finish their job

D.prefer to ask others about what to do next

57.What will those who often eat out put in the fridge?

A.All kinds of food they like. B.Only something to drink.

C.Fruit, vegetables and meat. D.Food rich in vitamins.

58.What might be the most suitable title for the text?

A.Keep your fridge a secret B.You are what’s in your fridge

C.What to put in the fridge D.Be careful about your fridge

C

Some problems are difficult to solve. But there are a lot of number expressions that can help. For example, if we put two and two together, we might come up with the right answer. We know that two heads are better than one. It is always better to work with another person to solve a problem. Some problems have only one solution. You cannot be of two minds over this. But with any luck, we could solve the problem in two shakes of a lamb’s tail. We could have our answers quickly and easily.

Sometimes we can kill two birds with one stone. That is, we can complete two goals with only one effort or action. But we must remember that two wrongs don’t make a right. If someone does something bad to you, you should not do the same to him.

If you are going out with your girlfriend, or boyfriend, but you don’t want another friend to go along on your date. You can just say to your friend: two’s company, three’s a crowd.

When I was a young child in school, I had to learn the three R’s. These important skills are reading, writing and arithmetic. These three words do not all start with the letter “R”. But they have the sound of “R”. My teachers used to give three cheers when I did well in math. They gave praise and approval for a job well done.

Some of my friends were confused and did not understand their schoolwork. They were at sixes and sevens. In fact, they did not care if they finished high school. But they were happy when

they completed their studies and graduated from high school. They were in seventh heaven. They were on cloud nine. Nine times out of ten students who do well in school find good jobs. Some work in an office doing the same things every day at nine-to-five jobs. You do not have to dress to the nines, or wear your best clothes, for this kind of work.

59.What is the best title of the passage?

A.How to Use Numbers. B.The Importance of Numbers.

C.Number Stories. D.Talk About Number Expressions. 60.Tom won first place in the game and we can congratulate him by using “”.

A.kill two birds with one stone B.give three cheers

C.be of two minds D.put two and two together

61.If you solve a problem easily and quickly, you can do it “”.

A.in seventh heaven B.dress up to the nines

C.in two shakes of a lamb’s tail D. at sixes and sevens

62.Which of the following can replace the phrase “in all probability”?

A.Kill two birds with one stone. B.Nine times out of ten.

C.At sixes and sevens. D.Two heads are better than one.

D

I had an experience once which taught me something about the ways people make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I officiated (主持) at two funerals for two elderly women. Both died a natural death. At the first home, the son of the deceased (已故的) woman said, “If only I had sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today. It’s my fault that she died.” At the second home, the son said, “If only I hadn’t insisted on her going to Florida, she would be alive today. That long airplane ride was more than she could take. It’s my fault.”

When things don’t turn out as we would like them to, we tend to think that had we done things differently, the story would have had a happier ending. Any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty. Because the course of action they took turned out bad, they believed that the opposite course, for example, keeping Mother at home, would have turned out better. After all, how could it have turned out any worse?

There seem to be two elements involved in our readiness to feel guilty. The first lies in our belief that the world makes sense and that there is a reason for everything that happens.

The second is the thought that we are the cause of what happens, especially the bad things that happens. The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood. A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it. He wakes up in the morning and calls the rest of the world to its tasks. He cries, and someone comes to attend to him. When he

is hungry, people feed him, and when he is wet, people change him. Very often, we do not completely give up that childish thought that our wishes cause things to happen.

63. What is true about the two deceased elderly women?

A. They both died of old age.

B. They died from hard work.

C. They weren’t used to the change in life.

D. They died due to lack of care by family members.

64. People feel guilty for the deaths of their loved ones because .

A. they cannot find a better way to express their sorrow

B. they believe that they are responsible for what has happened

C. they don’t know the natural course of events

D. they don’t know things often turn out in the opposite direction

65. The underlined part “the world makes sense” in Paragraph 3 probably means that .

A. everything in the world is planned in advance

B. the world can be understood in different ways

C. there’s an explanation for everything in the world

D. we have to be wise in order to understand the world

66. People have believed since early childhood that .

A. everybody must obey their demand

B. life and death is an unsolved mystery

C. every story should have a happy ending

D. their wishes are the cause of everything that happens

The biggest danger facing airlines nowadays may not be a terrorist with a gun, but the man with portable computer in business class. In the last 16 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference (电磁干扰). The source of this interference remains not proved, but increasingly, experts are pointing the blame at portable electronic devices such as portable computers, radio and cassette players and mobile telephones.

RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation (航空) industry, has suggested that all airlines ban such devices from being used during “critical” stages of flight, particularly take-off and landing. Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights. Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some airlines prevent passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are unwilling to carry out a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during flight.

The difficulty is predicting how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft’s computers.

Experts know that portable devices send out radiation which affects those wavelengths which aircraft use for navigation and communication. But, because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not.

The fact that aircraft may be fragile to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use radio systems in order to damage navigation equipment. As worrying, though, is the passenger who can’t hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music’s too loud.

67. What is said about the over 100 aircraft incidents in the past 16 years?

A. They may have been caused by the damage to the radio systems.

B. They may have taken place during take-off and landing.

C. They were proved to have been caused by the passengers portable computers.

D. They were suspected to have resulted from electromagnetic interference.

68. Why is it difficult to predict the possible effects of electromagnetic fields on an airplane’s

computers?

A. Because it is extremely dangerous to conduct such research on an airplane.

B. Because it remains a mystery what wavelengths are liable to be interfered with.

C. Because research scientists have not been able to produce the same effects in labs.

D. Because experts lack adequate equipment to do such research.

69. Few airlines want to perform a total ban on their passengers using electronic devices

because .

A. they don’t believe there is such a danger as radio interference

B. the harmful effect of electromagnetic interference is yet to be proved

C. most passengers refused to take a plane which bans the use of radio and cassette players

D. they have other effective safety measures to fall back on

70. The passage is mainly about .

A. a new rule for all airlines

B. the disadvantages of electronic devices

C. a possible cause of aircraft incidents

D. effective safety measures for air flight
