Animals seem to have the sense to eat when they are hungry and they do not eat more than their bodies need. It has been demonstrated (证明) that rats will, when given a choice over a period of time, prefer water with vitamins to water without vitamins, even though there is no difference in taste or smell between the two water bottles. When a fragrant flavor (味道;佐料) was added to the vitamin-enriched fluid (流体), the rats did seem to develop a taste for it and kept drinking it, even after the vitamins were changed to the clear water. In time, however, they broke the habit and

went back to where the necessary vitamins were.

In a classic experiment, babies of 6 to 12 months old were placed in a cafeteria (自助餐厅) feeding arrangement, with a wide choice of baby food before them. They were given whatever food they pointed to or appeared interested in. We are told that at first they showed some unusual eating patterns, but that over a period of time they managed to choose a well-balanced diet.

So in choosing food, rats and babies do seem to know and act on what’s best for them. Obviously, there is a kind of “body wisdom”, which humans soon lose. Most of us do not eat as wisely as we could. Many of our food preferences are culturally determined and influenced by long established (建立的) habits. Some people eat foxes, dogs and blackbirds, while we eat cows and pigs. So what people eat and how much they eat seems to be greatly influenced by what is going on around them.

56. In the experiment on rats, a fragrant flavor was added to the rat’s drinking water to _____.

A. encourage rats to drink vitamin-enriched water

B. find out rats’ preference in flavor

C. test whether rats know which drink is good for them

D. demonstrate that vitamins are tasteless

57. The expression the habit refers to drinking water which _____.

A. has no smell

B. is tasteless

C. has vitamins

D. is flavored

58. As far as their eating habits are concerned, babies and rats are similar in that _____.

A. both have the wisdom to choose a balanced diet

B. both prefer flavored food and drink

C. both have the same eating patterns

D. both develop a taste for the same kinds of flavors

59. In the classic experiment mentioned in the second paragraph, babies were ____.

A. given many choices of drinks

B. provided with various kinds of baby food

C. placed and fed in a cafeteria

D. trained to select a balanced diet

60. According to the passage, adults’ eatin g habits differ from those of babies

because _____.

A. adults know better than babies what kinds of food are good for their health

B. adults usually cannot resist the temptation of various delicious foods

C. adults’ eating habits are closely related to the social and cultural customs

D. adults have more choices of food than babies in eating patterns

B

Honesty may well be the best policy, but it often deserts us when no one is watching, psychologists report today. Experiments with an honesty box to collect payments for hot drinks show that people are better at paying up when under the gaze of a pair of eyes. The surprise was that the eyes were not real, but photographed.

Researchers at Newcastle University set up the experiment in secret. They attached a poster to a cupboard of mugs above an honesy box alongside a kettle, with tea, coffee and milk. Over 10 weeks, they alternated each week between images of eyes and pictures of flowers.

Dr Bateson, a behavioral biologist and leader of the study, said that even though

the eyes were not real they still seemed to make people behave more honestly. The effect may arise from behavioral characteristics that developed as early humans formed social groups that increased their chances of survival. Individuals had to co-operate for the good of the group, rather than act selfishly.

“If nobody is watching us it is in our interests to behave selfishly. But when we think we are being watched we should behave better, so people see us as co-operative and behave the same way towards us,” Dr Bateson said.

“We thought we’d get a slight effect with eyes, but it was quite striking how much difference they made. Even at a subconscious level, it seems people respond to eyes, and that might be because eyes send a strong biological signal we have evolved to respond to.”

The finding, which researchers believe sheds light on our evolutionary past, could be turned to practical use. The psychologists say images of eyes could promote ticket sales on public transport and improve monitor systems to prevent antisocial behavior.

A. the policy of honesty

B. an honesty box to collect money

C. evolution on honesty

D. an experiment on honesty

62. The reason for doing the experiment secretly is that the researchers ________.

In 1841, a book was published which astonished the world. It was called “Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan.”The author John Stephens had just returned from a long, difficult and dangerous journey through the thick rain forests of southern Mexico and Guatemala. He had gone there with Frederick and Catherwood, an architect and artist, to search for the remains of a lost civilazation known as Mayas. Very little was known about the Mayas at that time but Catherwood’s drawing in the book revealed incredible cities with temples , pyramids and other buildings as impressive as those of their northern neiboughs, the Aztecs. These cities, hoeever, were deserted. The inhabitants had vanished almost a thousand years ago.

Since that time, far more has been learnt about this remarkable civilization. The Mayas had a highly developed system of government and of agriculture, as well as an incredibly accurate system of measuring time. They were also wonderful engineers. Capable of moving huge blocks of stone long distances and cutting them into precise shapes and sizes.

And yet although the Mayas knew the wheel, they never used it. Neither did they use metals other than copper. What is ever more interesting is that they suddenly abandoned many of their cities and built new ones in the jungle. Some time around AD900, Mayan civilization collapsed. By the year 1200, their last great capital, Chichen, Itza, was deserted.

Who were these strange people and the even stranger gods they worshipped? What brought about their sudden and mysterious collapse? Some writers have tried to prove that the Mayas had contact with visitors from space and even that they themselves came from another planet. Some people believe that their civilization came to an end because the Mayas never developed a proper resistance to local germs and diseases. All we really know is that when the first European appeared of their coast in 1517, this great and mysterious culture was only a memory.

66. Stephen’s book astonished the world because ______________________.

B. the Mayas were excellent builders and farmers.

C. he had experienced so may difficulties to find this lost civilization.

D. it described that the Mayas used to be an advanced civilization.

C. rain forests in Southern America

D. Chichen Itza

68. One of the most surprising findings about Mayas was that they _____________.

A. developed precise system measuring time.

B. knew how to build pyramids with stones.

C. deserted their cities and moved tonew places.

D. built cities which they never lived in.

69. The last Mayas vanished from the world most probably in _________.

A. a thousand years before 1814

B. around AD900

C. any year between 1200 and 1517

D. 1200

70. What brought about Mayan sudden collapse?

B. European conquest

C. Mysterious force from outer space

D. No one knows for sure

Life insurance isn’t fun to buy. It forces you to think about your death, a subject many prefer not to face. Indeed, many people choose not to think about the topic. But for these people there’s a single, overriding reason to buy life insurance: to provide an ine for your family should you die.

Don’t depend only on an agent to figure out your life-insurance needs. Rule of thumb estimates are about five or eight times your ine, but these are just guesses; they may produce too little or too much insurance. Carry too little insurance you may not provide a reasonable standard of living for your family after your death; carry too much and you may not enjoy a reasonable standard of living while you’re alive.

Most people who have life insurance don’t have enough. The median amount of coverage for all adults with life insurance was only $ 25,000 in xx. That’s obviously not enough to support a family with young children for very long. Nationwide Insurance found that the married men in its xx survey carried an average of about $ 131,880 in life insurance; they needed about $ 110,706 more. Married women carried about $ 53,516 worth insurance but needed some $ 108,507 more.

How do you determine the amount of insurance you would need to maintain your family’s current life style if the breadwinner died? First, figure out your family’s expenses would be if you died tomorrow. Then, analyze your possessions and the sources of ine that you can use to cover the expenses. Finally, subtract the possessions from the needs. The result is the amount of additional insurance that you’ll need to buy.

71. Why life insurance not fun to buy?

A. because it costs a lot of money.

B. because it reminds you that you may die one day

C. because there is a single, overriding reason

D. because it forces you to think

72. If you carry too much or too little insurance,__________________.

A. either you or your family might suffer

B. you may not provide a reasonable standard of living while you’re alive

C. you mat not enjoy a reasonable standard of living while you’re alive.

D. you will know in the end that they are just wild guesses

73. The underlined phrase “rule of thumb ”in para.2 refers to ____________. A. a precise and useful rule or method based on accurate measures B. a rough and useful rule or method based on experience C. an authoritative rule or method D. a thoey-based rule or method 74. According to the xx survey by Nationwide Insurance, the reasonable average of insurance that married women should carry was______. A. $ 110,706 B. $ 108,507 C. $ 53,516 D. $ 162,023 75. How do you determine the amount of life insurance you would need? A. By analyzing your possessions and the sources of ine B. By estimating your family ’s expenses C. By taking away the possessions from the expenses D. By adding the possessions and the expenses xx ――xx 学年度高三12月月考试题 英语试题 第Ⅱ卷 第四部分:书面表达(共两节,满分45分) 第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分) 阅读下面的短文,请根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求) If the sun has enough power to warm and light the whole earth, it must have enough power to do other things, too. Can we use the sun ’s abundant energy to supply electricity, or at least to perform the functions which electricity or other types of power usually perform? The answer is yes. For example, people have for many years been using the reflected heat of the sun to cook. Solar cookers have been built with several curved (弯曲)mirrors reflecting the sun and focusing its heat on the cooking ponent. This equipment can be used just like a gas or electric stove; it is more expensive to make but it does not need any fuel, and so costs nothing to use. Another possibility of using solar energy is in househeating. The form of energy we use most is electricity, and every day more is needed. But electricity has to be made, too, and to make it ____________ are required —oil, gas and nowadays even uranium (铀). The question which worries everyone today is: how long will these fuels last? Nobody knows it for sure, but most experts think it will soon be difficult to obtain

sufficient electricity from these sources. It is possible that the sun can make

a

contribution here, too.

Solar power has already been used to produce terrific heat. In Southern France a solor furnace (huge stove) has been built, where temperatures reach more than 3,000℃. This furnace is only used for experiments at present, but could be used to produce strem for a power station.

Recently, Liyang, the founder of “Crazy English” has promoted his English learning method all over the country. Many experts have different opinions about it. Personally, It’s an effective way to improve our English.

Firstly, since Chinese people are good at “silent”English but poor at speaking it, “Crazy English” makes up for the shorting with its unique methods---think out loud and speak out loud. People learning “Crazy English” are at least able to open their mouths and stay confident.

Secondly, “Crazy English”call on us to recite many English words , phrases, sentences and even passages. It is really tough, but it does help us build up our understanding of the language. As time goes on, we’ll make progress in our spoken English and gain confidence using it.

Thirdly, being crazy about English helps us create a good environment to learn English ,as it engages people in the language.

In short, “Crazy English” does really work.

A It was Thanksgiving morning. I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step. “Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them. I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing th in little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow. “Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa.” They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking. The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?” “Am I rich? Pity, no!” I looked at my worn-out slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟)carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful. Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched. I tasted the potatoes and stirred(搅动)the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too. I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy marks of little sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am. 36.Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A.Lady, are you rich? B.A story of Thanksgiving Day C.Don't forget how rich you are D.Does cups and saucers match well? 37.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A.The girl thought the writer was rich just because she wanted to make the writer happy. B.The writer had thought she wasn't rich because her supplies were not expensive. C.If cups and saucers match well, they are a best pair even though cheap.

Maybe next time you feel sad, you should try going outside if it is sunny. Doctors know that how much sunlight we get can change how we feel. Scientists learned this by interviewing people who live in different parts of the world. In the far north, in Alaska or Finland, for example, the days are very short in the winter. People living in these places say that they often feel unhappy in the winter. In the south, where there are more daylight hours, fewer people say they are unhappy in the winter. The reason is the amount (数量) of sunlight these people get each day. Sunlight changes the chemicals (化学物) in our bodies, and these chemicals can change the way we feel. A couple of hours of strong sunlight or light from a special lamp can help your body make the chemicals that make us feel happy. Another way to feel happier is to get some exercise. Just like sunlight, regular exercise helps our bodies make certain chemicals, which make us feel happier. In addition, exercise helps people sleep better and lack of sleep often makes people feel unhappy. Exercise also helps you get rid of stress. When you are angry or upset about something, exercise is a good way to get those bad feelings out of you. 16. Why do people in the far north feel unhappy more often than people in the south? A. Because they can’t go outside. B. Because they get less sunlight. C. Because the weather is too cold. D. Because the summer is too short. 17. How can sunlight change the way you feel? A. On a sunny day, you can play outside. B. Sunlight makes you less tired.
