A Survey of the Olympic Games

The Olympic Games are an international multi-sport event2 subdivided into summer and winter games. They are each held every four years. Until 1992,they were both held in the same year. Since then, they have been separated two years apart3.

There are more than 20 Summer Olympics sports, including swimming, basketball, soccer, gymnastics, boxing, weight-lifting, yachting, cycling and equestrian events. Skiing, ice-skating and ice hockey are among the 7 Winter Game sports. A competitor must be the citizen of the country he or she represents. No more than three entries from any country are permitted in each event (4 in the winter games). Only one team per country is allowed in a team sport4.

There are many myths surrounding the origin of the ancient Olympic Games. The most popular legend describes that Heracles5 was the creator of the Olympic Games and built the Olympic stadium and surrounding buildings as an honor to his father, Zeus after completing his 12 labors6. According to that legend, he walked in a straight line for 400 strides and called this distance a “ stadium" that later also became a distance calculation unit. This is also why a modern stadium is 400 meters in circumference length (1 stadium = 400 meters).

From then on,the Olympic Games were quickly becoming more and more important throughout ancient Greece, reaching their zenith in the 6th and 5th centuries BC. The Olympics were of fundamental religious importance, contests alternating with sacrifices and ceremonies honoring both Zeus (whose colossal statue stood at Olympia),and Pelops, divine hero and mythical king of Olympia famous for his legendary chariot7 race,in whose honor the games were held. The number of events increased to 20,and the celebration was spread over several days. Winners of the events were greatly admired and were immortalized in poems and statues8. The Games were held every four years, and the period between two celebrations became known as an “Olympiad"9. The Greeks used Olympiads as one of the ir methods to count years. The most famous Olympic athlete lived in these times: the 6th century BC wrestler, Milo Croton, is the only athlete in history to win a victory in six Olympics.

The Games gradually declined in importance after the Romans gained power in Greece. After Emperor Theodosius I10 made Christianity the religion of the Empire11 and banned pagan rites, the

Olympic Games were outlawed as a pagan festival in 393 AD.

In 1894,a French noble man,Pierrde, called a meeting in Paris that led to the first modern Olympic Games, held in Athens in 1896. Thirteen nations sent a total of 285 men, and the Games were revived. Since then the Olympics have been held in different cities of the world once every four years, with the exception of war years 1916, 1940 and 1944. Women first competed in 1912. In 1924 the Winter Olympics were instituted at Chamonix, France.

The Olympic Games should be a good occasion to promote world sports, understanding and friendship among different nations, but unfortunately the Games were frequently affected by politics resulting in the boycotts of the Games. The 1956 Melbourne Olympics were the first Olympics that were boycotted by the Netherlands, Spain, and Switzerland.

In 1980 and 1984, the Cold War opponents12 boycotted each other's games. Sixty-five nations refused to compete at the Moscow Olympics13 in 1980 because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The boycott reduced the number of nations participating to only 81,the lowest number of nations to compete since 1956. The Soviet Union and 14 of its Eastern Bloc14 partners (except Romania) countered by skipping the Los Angeles Olympics15 in 1984.

国民党的军事封锁:the KMT army's military blockades。

陕匕苏区:the northern part of Shaanxi Province, the Chinese Soviet areaQ “陕匕”胃t旨陕西省北部,“苏区”是指中国第二次国内革命战争时期由中国苏维埃(中国共产党)控

新闻王国的普洛米修斯:Prometheus of the press。

笔者:the present writer

addiction to travel indeed contributed to his rise as one of the most prestigious journalists in the 20th century。

He might have been influenced by Mark Twain's works。对过去情况的推测应用“might/could/may + have +过去分词”结构。

雷德诺号,”可译为boarded Thunder,a ship bound for the Far East, 用同位语a ship bound for the Far East具体说明“雷德诺号”。

Become a Journey0

Snow and His Travel

Speaking of Snow, anyone who has some knowledge of modern Chinese history ought to know about him. Wasn't he the American journalist, who crossed the KMT army's military blockades and ventured into the northern part of Shaanxi Province to interview Mao Zedong and cover the news about the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army just after completing the Long March? Yes, exactly. But how could the man, who is known as Prometheus of the press, have anything

to do with travel? It may sound incredible, but according to the study of huge amounts of materials

*

available by the present writer, secretary-general of Shaanxi Snow Research Centre, it can be concluded that his addiction to travel indeed contributed to his rise as one of the most prestigious journalists in the 20th century.

As a young boy, Snow, who might have been influenced by Mark Twain's works, was very interested in travel and adventure. After reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and Life on the Mississippi, 17-year-old Snow then drove a T-type tourist car with several of his young buddies, heading for California, 3,000 kilometers away from his home state, Missouri. Three months later, when he had spent all his five dollars, he felt obliged to climb onto slow-going freight trains, despite the police's pursuits or arrests. With the rumbling of the train, he traveled across the world's famous Royal Gorge and saw more than half of America's spectacular

landscapes. On February 15,1928, Snow, at the age of 23 then, resolutely boarded Thunder, a ship bound for the Far East, without informing his family, setting out to realize his dream of touring the world. The motivation of his French leave could be found in his letter to his parents two days after he left America:

Dear Dad and Mom,

Please don,t regard my departure as careless and hasty. In fact, I have cherished the aspiration to tour the world for a long time ...As far as I am concerned, what can keep my life happy and meaningful are travel, adventure, and the direct involvement !

Love Edgar

In 1958 or 30 years later,Snow explained his motive more explicitly in his book Become a Journey:

“ I was 22 that year and made some money in the Wall Street speculation, which was enough for me to be on a one-year adventurous tour of the world if I was to be thrifty. ”

Obviously this young man's Far East travel, which was at most an adventure by a romantic young man,was without any great objective at first. It was only his legendary travel experiences, especially the experiences of his visit to the northern part of Shaanxi Province 60 years ago that determined his lifetime cause, thus closely connecting his life with the Chinese revolution.

We crossed the Yangtze and arrived at the station, where I bought a ticket while he saw to my luggage... At the sight of his back tears started to my eyes, but I wiped them hastily so that neither he nor anyone else might see them.

As the weather was getting better, we decided to go for an outing the next day.

Three months later, when he had spent all his five dollars, he felt obliged to climb onto slow- going freight trains, despite the police's pursuits or arrests.

It was only his legendary travel experiences, especially the experiences of his visit to the northern part of Shaanxi Province 60 years ago that determined his lifetime cause, thus closely connecting his life with the Chinese revolution.

Cultural exchanges among historical and culturally-significant cities, whose respective features and individuality are their unique and invaluable symbols, will greatly contribute to the sustainable development and prosperity of their cultures.

No previous games had seen such a spectacular organization, nor such a lavish display of entertainment. Goering,Ribbentrop and Goebbels gave dazzling parties for the foreign visitors —the Propaganda Minister's Italian Night near Wannsee gathered more than a thousand guests at dinner in a scene that resembled the Arabian Nights. 选修6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.

Part 1 It was the first day of term at Abbey Park School. Class 4 sat in the neat rows. They sat up straight. Nobody talked or picked their nose. The Head, Miss Lupin, had told them to wait quietly for their new teacher. Suddenly the door flew open. The new teacher strode in .He had a black patch over one eye and a sword at his belt. His beard hung in thick dark curls. ‘Ahoy, mates! The name’s Blackbones , Captain Blackbones!’ he bellowed. Blackbones sat down on top of his desk. He kicked off his black boots, showing a hole in one sock. Class 4 gasped as he pulled out his sword—and used it to sharpen a pencil. He pointed at Yasmin. ‘You, matey, what lesson is it?’ ‘Please Captain, geography.’ Blackbones stroked his beard. ‘ Ge-og-ruffy. Never heard of it. We’ll start with Art.’ Lessons began. They painted a skull and crossbones on the classroom door. With their rulers, they practiced sword fighting. Blackbones winked. ‘Now you looks like proper pirates. Let’s sail for the sea.’ ‘The sea’s miles away,’ said Adrian.

Unit 3 A healthy life Part I Advice from Grandad Dear James, 1.It is a beautiful day here and I am sitting under the big tree at the end of the garden. I have just returned from a long bike ride to an old castle. It seems amazing that at my age I am still fit enough to cycle 20 km in an afternoon. It’s my birthday in two weeks’ time and I’ll be 82 years old! I think my long and active life must be due to the healthy life I live. 2.This brings me to the real reason for my letter, my dear grandson. Your mother tells me that you started smoking some time ago and now you are finding it difficult to give it up. Believe me, I know how easy it is to begin smoking and how tough it is to stop. You see, during adolescence I also smoked and became addicted to cigarettes. 3.By the way, did you know that this is because you become addicted in three different ways? First, you can become physically addicted to nicotine, which is one of the hundreds of chemicals in cigarettes. This means that after a while your body becomes accustomed to having nicotine in it. So when the drug leaves your body, you get withdrawal symptoms. I remember feeling bad-tempered and sometimes even in pain. Secondly, you become addicted through habit. As you know, if you do the same thing over and over again, you begin to do it automatically. Lastly, you can become mentally addicted. I believed I was happier and more relaxed after having a cigarette, so I began to think that I could only feel good when I smoked. I was addicted in all three ways, so it was very difficult to quit. But I did finally manage.

Walrus Joins In 1What will Walrus do? Everyone at the North Pole was very excited. There was going to be a show and ANYONE could be in it. ?I will do skating,‘ said Arctic Fox. ?I‘m good at that!‘ ?I‘ll do tumbling,‘ said Polar Bear. ?No one tumbles quite like me!‘ ?I‘ll do singing,‘ said Seal. ?Everyone says I have a very fine voice!‘ ?Then I‘ll do diving,‘ said Whale. ?I won a prize for diving at school, you know!‘ They all looked at Walrus. ?What will YOU do?‘ they asked. But Walrus was not good at anything. He wasn‘t good at skating, and he wasn‘t good at tumbling. He was terrible at singing, and when he tried to dive, he always got water up his nose. He sat and chewed his whiskers sadly. ?Never mind,‘ said Arctic Fox. ?You can watch us.‘ Arctic Fox and Polar Bear and Seal and Whale practised hard for the big show. Walrus hid behind a snowdrift and watched, and chewed his whiskers. He wished he was good at something. 2The big night At last, the big night arrived. Everyone sat down and waited for the show to begin. Walrus sat in the front row. He was very excited. Fox came onto the ice and bowed. Everyone cheered. Then Fox began to skate. Fox skated forwards and backwards and sideways. She skated in perfect circles and figures of eight. She was elegant and amazing! Walrus watched and he loved what he saw. Fox made it all look so easy. Walrus was sure that if he really tried he could skate just like Fox. He couldn‘t stop himself. He just had to lea p onto the ice and join in with Fox. ―I can skate,‖ he cried. ―Look at me!‖ But Walrus couldn‘t skate at all. He could only trip up and fall over. He bumped into Fox, and Fox went flat on her face. FLOMP! Fox was very upset. ―Walrus has RUINED my act,‖ she wailed. Next, it was Polar Bear‘s turn. He rolled out across the ice like a big, white snowball. Everyone clapped wildly. Then Polar Bear began to tumble. He did jumps and spins and somersaults, and stood on his head. Walrus watched and he loved what he saw. Polar Bear made it all look
