Doctors are known to be terrible pilots. They don’t listen because they already know it all. I was lucky: I became a pilot in 1970, almost ten years before I graduated from medical school. I didn’t realize then, but becoming a pilot makes me a better surgeon. I loved flying. As I flew bigger, faster planes, and in worse weather, I learned about crew resource management(机组资源管理), or CRM, a new idea to make flying safer. It means that crew members should listen and speak up for a good result, regardless of positions.

I first read about CRM in 1980. Not long after that, an attending doctor and I were flying in bad weather. The controller had us turn too late to get our landing ready. The attending doctor was flying; I was safety pilot. He was so busy because of the bad turn, he had forgotten to put the landing gear(起落架)down. He was a better pilot-and my boss-so it felt unusual to speak up. But I had to: Our lives were in danger. I put aside m y uneasiness and said, “We need to put the landing gear down now!” That was my first real lesson in the power of CRM, and I’ve used it in the operating room ever since.

CRM requires that the pilot/surgeon encourage others to speak up. It further requires that when opinions are from the opposite, the doctor doesn't overreact, which might prevent fellow doctors from voicing opinions again. So when I'm in the operating room, I ask for ideas and help from others. Sometimes they’re not willing to speak up. But I hope that if I continue to encourage them, someday someone will keep me from “landing gear up”.

4.What does the author say about doctors in general?

A.They like flying by themselves. B.They are unwilling to take advice.

C.They pretend to be good pilots. D.They are quick learners of CRM. 5.The author deepened his understanding of the power of CRM when .

A.he saved the plane by speaking up B.he was in charge of a flying task

C.his boss landed the plane too late D.his boss operated on a patient

6.In the last paragraph “landin g gear up” probably means .

A.following flying requirements B.overreacting to different opinions

C.listening to what fellow doctors say D.making a mistake that may cost lives 7.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.CRM:A New Way to Make Flying Safe B.Flying Makes Me a Better Doctor

C.The Making of a Good Pilot D.A Pilot-Turned Doctor

The rebuilt Notre Dame (巴黎圣母院) could feature futuristic glass design, solar power, and an urban farm that supports vulnerable and homeless Pari sians, if one architecture firm’s vision is realized. In April, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced an international competition for architects to redesign the cathedral’s 19th century spire (尖顶), which fell down after a fire destroyed the 850-year-old Gothic landmark. Paris firm Vincent Callebaut Architectures (VCA) responded to the call with an eco-friendly design that supports the local population and produces more energy than it uses.

The Vincent Ca llebaut (VC) project is titled “Palingenesis”, a Greek concept of rebirth or recreation. The firm proposes a new roof made of glass, oak and carbon fiber, which connects “in one single curved stroke of pencil”to the sloping spire. The rooster which topped the original spire, regained from the remains after the fire, will resume its watch from the new glass design, while the cathedral’s choir will be “bathed in natural light”.

Beneath the spire, the roof will host a fruit and vegetable farm run by charities and volunteers, in order to produce free food for vulnerable local people. “Up to 21 tons of fruits and vegetables could be harvested and directly re distributed for free each year,” the firm said in a press release. “To that end, a farmers’ market would be held every week on the forecourt of Notr e Dame.” The roof and spire will also produce electricity, heat and ventilation (air circulation) for the cathedral: an “organic active layer”within the glass will prov ide solar power, while the roof’s diamond-shaped “scales”will open to offer natural ventilation—a design inspired by termite mounds (白蚁丘). The spire will act as space in which hot air accumulates in winter.

“How can we write the contemporary history of our country, but also that of science, art and spirituality together?” the f irm said in the press release. “We seek to present a supreme project, a symbol of a lively and ecological future.” If the Vincent Callebaut design is selected, the firm said, the reborn Notre Dame will define “the new face of the Church in the 21st century”, presenting “a fairer symbiotic relationship between h umans and nature”.

8.What can be leaned about the design of Notre Dame by VCA?

A.It is focused on the theme of “green”.

B.It can recover Notre Dame’s original appearance.

C.It gets the most local support than the others.

D.It is from the most famous architect around the world.

9.What does the underlined part “resume its watch” in paragraph 2 mean?

A.Be made of high-tech materials.

B.Show people the right time again.

C.Be removed and placed somewhere else.

D.Overlook Notre Dame again at its original place.

10.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

A.The inspiration of the design.

B.The function of the roof and the spire.

C.A detailed introduction of the VCA project.

D.The symbol of Notre Dame for the local people.

11.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.The future of the new Notre Dame looks black

B.The VCA is confident about winning the competition.

C.The proposal for the Notre Dame has been approved.

D.The new design of Notre Dame will be a mix of history, science and art.

MIT researchers have developed a way to incorporate( 融入) electronic sensors into fabrics, allowing them to create shirts or other garments that could be used to monitor vital signs such as temperature and heart rate. The sensor-embedded garments can be customized to fit close to the body of the person wearing them.

“We can have electronic parts or lab-made electronics embedded within the textiles that we wear every day, creating comfortable garments,” says Dagdeviren, a professor at MIT. His group set out to create garments more similar to the clothes we normally wear, using a fabric that has removable electronic sensors in it.

“In our case, the textile is not electrically functional. It’s just a passive element of our garment so that you can wear the devices comfo rtably during your daily activities,” Dagdeviren says. “Our main goal was to measure the physical activity of the body all from the same body part, without requiring any fixture or any tape.”

The electronic sensors consist of long flexible strips(细条). These channels have small openings that allow the sensors to be exposed to the skin. For this study, the researchers designed a shirt with 30 temperature sensors and an accelerometer that can measure the wearer’s movement, heart rate, and breathing rate. The garment can then transmit(传输) this data wirelessly to a smartphone.

This kind of sensing could be useful for personalized telemedicine, allowing doctors to remotely monitor patients. “You don’t need to go to the doctor or do a video call,” Dagdeviren says. “Through this kind of da ta collection, I think doctors can make better assessments and help their patients in a better way.”

Last summer, several of the researchers spent time at a factory in Shenzhen, China, to experiment with mass-producing the material used for the garments. “From the outside it looks like a normal T-shirt, but from the inside, you can see the electronic parts which are touching your skin,” Dagdeviren says.

12.Why do MIT researchers make sensor-embedded garments?

A.To create garments with medical functions.

B.To satisfy customers’ personal need for fashion.

C.To complete their academic tasks.

D.To transform patents for benefits.

13.What is the main function of the electronic sensors?

A.Monitoring wearers’ behavior.

B.Making the skin fully exposed.

C.Adjusting wearers’ body temperature.

D.Collecting and transmitting health information.

14.What do the researchers expect of the garments in the future?

A.They will bring convenience to patients.

B. They could be in mass-production soon.

C.They might lead the new fashion.

D.They may take the place of doctors.

15.What can we infer about wearing a sensor-embedded garment according to Dagdeviren?

A.It’s fashionable. B. It’s skin-friendly. C.It’s eco-friendly. D.It’s awkward.

Stretch first! Warm up for at least ten minutes before each long-distance cycling session. 17. This way, you can reduce the risk of injury. Pace yourself. 18. Try to keep up this pace as best you can. Use a lower gear so that you don’t wear yourself out. Try to keep up a rate of roughly 90 rpm(revolutions[旋转] per minute)on a low gear to go easy on your muscles and lungs. Shift gears. When you come to a hill, change into a lower gear so that you can more easily reach the top. 19. Throughout the ride, stay aware of how hard you are working. If you are struggling to push the pedals, you should switch into a lower gear to conserve your energy.

A light rain was falling as my sister Jill and I ran out of the shop, eager to get home and play with the presents that our parents had prepared for us and our baby sister, Sharon. Across the street from the shop was a gas station where the Greyhound bus stopped, which was closed for New Year, but I saw a family standing outside the locked door, gathering closely together under the narrow overhang in an attempt to keep dry. I wondered briefly why they were there but then forgot about them as I raced to keep up with Jill.

Once we got home, there was barely time to enjoy our presents. We had to go off to our grandparents’ house for our annual family dinner. As we drove down the highway through town, I noticed that the family was still there, standing outside the closed gas station.

My father was driving very slowly down the highway. The closer we got to the turnoff(岔道) for my grandparents’ house, the slower the car went. Su ddenly, my father made a U-turn in the middle of the road and said that he couldn’t stand it. “What?” asked my mother. “It’s those people back there at the station, standing in the rain. They’ve got children. It’s New Year. I can’t stand it.”

When my father pulled into the service station, I saw that there were five of them: the parents and three children—two girls and a small boy, who were getting wet standing there. My father rolled down his window. “Happy New Year,” he said.

“Thanks. You, too,” the man replied. He was very tall and had to bend slightly to look into the car. Jill, Sharon, and I looked at the children, and they looked back at us.

“You waiting on the bus?” my father asked. The man said that they were. They were going to Birmingham, where he had a brother and chances of a job. Knowing the bus wouldn’t come along for several hours, my father invited them to our home to shelter from the rain.

Hello everyone!

I’m glad to share with you some ideas about garbage classification.

To my understanding, the earth is h ome to every individual, and it’s our duty to protect it voluntarily. By sorting out the waste, we can not only reduce pollution but also conserve energy, which will recycle valuable resources.

For the sake of our environment and life, we should learn to sort out the rubbish and make it a habit. Everyone can make a difference and let's bring a brighter future for the planet!

Thank you!

The man thought about it for a moment, but then refused. He said he didn’t want to put us to any bother. My father explained that the rain would last long and our house was near the station. After my parents’ strong persuasion, he finally agreed and thanked us all the time. They climbed into the car. They had no luggage, only the clothes they were wearing. Once they settled in, my father looked back over his shoulder handing them some tissues to wipe the rainwater from their faces.

When we got out of the car at our house, the three children ran through the front door happily. My mother noticed all their clothes were wet, so she found some of ours for them to change. Jill and I decided to share our New Year presents with the children. One of the girls chose Jill’s doll and immediately hugged it to her breast. When the rain stopped, my father drove them to the station. As they drove away, I watched out the window as long as I could, looking back at their happy faces. That was the day when Jill and I learned the joy of making others happy.

My father explained that the rain would last long and our house was near the station. As they drove away,1 watched out the window as long as I could, looking back at their happy faces.
