Alice was a B-plus student through her first three years at college. During the winter holidays in her senior year, while she was driving during a storm, her car ran off the road and hit a tree. Alice banged her head on the steering stake but never lost consciousness. She was treated for bruises arel discharged from them hospital within a day.
But, back at her studies, she began to have difficulties. Suddenly her As and Bs were gone. She had trouble remembering what she'd read and was irritable and easily distracted.
Alice was referred to a neuropsychologist for further examination. Although her IQ hadn't changed and standard neurological tests were normal, detailed neuropsychological tests showed she was having memory problems. She could still process new information, but it took longer than before and she became "overloaded" if she tries to do too much at once.
Head injuries are often fatal, or of sufficient severity to require the hospitalization of victims. But there is a large group of people who sustain head injuries which can go undetected through ordinary medical examination. There are the people who seemingly recover from their injuries but still suffer subtle intellectual and behavioral effect that may seriously impair their ability to work and interact normally with other people. They are the victims of what experts call a "silent epidemic". Some never lost consciousness and others never even suffered a direct blow to the head, yet brain damage occurred.

But the worst of it isn't society’s work -ethic morality; it’s your own, which you never knew you had. You find out how much self -satisfaction was gained from even the simplest work--related task; a well worded letter, a well-handled phone call --even a clean fire. Being useful to yourself isn't enough.
But then almost everyone has heard about the need to be a useful member of society .What you didn't know about was the loneliness. You've spent your life almost constantly surrounded by people, in classes, in dorms and at work. To suddenly find yourself with only your cat to talk to a day distorts your sense of reality. You begin to worry that flights of fancy might become one way.
But you always were, and still are, stronger than that. You maintain balance and perspective, mainly through resorting frequently to sarcasm and irreverence. Although something going wrong in any aspect of your life now seems to push you into temporary despair much more easily than before, you have done vey important things to hang on to --people who care, your sense of humor your talents, your cat and your hopes.

One wet night I was coming home through Hyde Park from working late on a job in Paddington. Pain and wind and swept boughs and sickly gaslights on the wet asphalt; and poles and scaffolding about in preparation for the Jubilee celebration. I had sent a couple of attempts on the subject to the Bulletin, and had got encouragement in Answer to Correspondents. And now the idea of "Sons of the South" or "Song of the Republic" came. I wrote it and screwed up courage to go down to the Bulletin after hours, intending to chop the thing into the letter box, but just as I was about to do so, or rather making up my mind as to whether I'd shove it in, or take it home and have another look at the spelling and the dictionary, the door opened suddenly and a haggard woman stood there. And I shoved the thing into her hand and got away round the corner, feeling something like a person who had been nearly caught on the premises under suspicious circumstances and was not safe yet by any means.
I hadn't the courage to go near the Bulletin often again, but used to lie awake at night and get up very early and slip down to the nearest news-agent's on Thursday mornings, to have a pep at the Bulletin, in fear and trembling and half furtively, as if the news-agent-another hard -life woman, by the way, named Mrs. Furlong-would guess my secret. At last, sick with disappointment, I went to the office and saw Mr. Archibird, who seemed surprised, encouraged me a lot and told me that they were holding the "Song of a Republic" over for a special occasion-Eight Hours Day.

Protected by sweaters and a leather jacket against the biting blasts of wind, I walk along the hillside this afternoon. Snow lies drifted among the wild cherries. Where the wind has swept bare the ground, the soil is frozen and rocklike. On this day of bleak cold, the earth seems dead. Yet every field and hillside, like a child, has the seeds and powers of growth hidden within it. From cocoon to bur, on a winter's day, there is everywhere life, dormant but waiting.
Within the earth there are roots and seeds; on the bare twigs, there are winter buds; buried in soil and mud beneath ice-locked water are the turtles and frogs and dragonfly nymphs; hidden in decaying logs and under snow-covered debris are the fertilized queens of the wasps and bumblebees. Everywhere, on all sides of us, as far as winter reigns, life is suspended temporarily. But it has not succumbed. It is merely dormant for the time being, merely waiting for the magic touch of the spring. All the blooms of another summer, all the unfolding myriad leaves, all the lush green carpet of the grass, all the perfumes of the midsummer dusk, all the rush and glitter of the dragonfly's wings under the August sun--all these are inherent, locked up in the winter earth.
Nor is this time of suspended activity wholly wasted. Scientists have discovered that, for many kinds of seeds, a period of cold is essential to their proper spouting. They require the months of cold just as they do the days of spring.
Seeds that lie on the frozen ground, that are coated with sleet and buried by snow, are thus the most favored of all. Bring those same seeds indoors, cuddle them, keep them warm, protect them from wind and cold and snow, and they sprout readily in the spring. The seeming punishment of winter is providing, in reality, invaluable aid. Similarly, the eggs of some insects, such as the Rocky Mountain locust, need cold for proper hatching.
Winter cold, the enemy of the easy life, thus is not the enemy of all life. It aids in the proper development of seed and egg. The death like inactivity of the winter earth is only an illusion. Life is every where in every foot of frozen soil, in every rocklike yard of solid ground-life is the endless variety of its normal forms.

Before Keynes, economists were gloomy naysayers. “Nothing can be done”, “Don’t interfere,” “It will never work,” they intoned with Eyeore-like pessimism. But Keynes was an unswerving optimist. Of course we can lick unemployment! There is no reason to put up with recessions and depressions! The “economic problem is not-if we look into the future-the permanent problem of the human race,” he wrote.
Keynes was born in Cambridge, England, in 1883.His father John Neville Keynes was a noted Cambridge economist. His mother Florence Ada Keynes became mayor of Cambridge. Young John was a brilliant student but didn't immediately aspire to either academia or public life. He wanted to run a railroad. "It is so easy...and fascinating to master the principles of these things," he told a friend, with his usual modesty. But no railroad came along, and Keynes ended up taking the civil service exam. His lowest mark was in economics. "I evidently knew more about Economics than my examiners,” he later explained.
Keynes was posted to the India Office, but the Civil Service proved deadly dull, and he soon left. He lectured at Cambridge, edited an influential journal and socialized with his Bloomsbury friends, surrounded himself with artists and writers and led an altogether dilettantish life until Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated in Sarajevo, and Europe was plunged into World War one. Keynes was called to Britain's Treasury to work on overse

as finances, where he quickly shone. Even his artistic tastes came in handy. He figured a way to balance the French accounts by having Britain's National Gallery buy paintings by Manet, Corot and Delacroix at bargain prices.

The staff got right to business and conferred all day. Victor Henry worked with the planners , on the level below the chiefs of and their deputies where Burne-Wilke operated, and of course far below the summit of the President , the Prime Minister , and their advisers .Familiar problems came up at once: excessive and contradictory requests from the British services , unreal plans, unfilled contracts , jumbled priorities , fouled communications . One cardinal point the planners hammered our fast. Building new ships to replace U-boat sinkings came first. No war material could be used against Hitler until it had crossed the ocean. This plain truth, so simple once agreed on ,ran a red line across every request ,every program , every projection .Steel aluminum, rubber, valves , motors , machine tools ,copper wire , all the thousand things of war ,would go first to ships. This simple yardstick rapidly disclosed the poverty of the “arsenal of democracy”, and dictated – as a matter of frightening urgency- a gigantic job of building new steel mills, and plants to turn the steel into combat machines and tools.

A Chinese to

English

ENGLISH TO CHINESE
My guess is that English will retain its currency in the world for the next 50 or so, but it is difficult to see it retaining it beyond them. If the Chinese could establish some reasonable way of writing their language by forming some sort of alphabeticisation, then give the exponential population growth among Chinese communities, their language would rapidly gain in importance. And let’s not forget Spanish; some predict that there will be a Spanish majority in the United States within twenty years. So it is not impossible to conceive that another language might come to dominate besides English one day.
An equally important trend will be the fragmentation of English. Many countries are now using English so much that they are starting to each their own particular brand of the language with different forms of sentence construction, for example. They no longer want native speakers to teach English, but locals whose version of English contains the same forms as the local use of the language. This is not just true in colonial countries, it’s happening as far apart as Germany and the Pacific Rim. It’s a strongly democratic move and I think we will see a lot more local publishing as a result.
Yet while forms of English become increasingly localized, the information explosion is also making our use of language more global, it’s not a letter, not a postcard. And it has own casual style, often without complete sentences. English is especially well adapted to this style, as it can easily be shortened. So I suspect English will continue to be advanced than other languages on the worldwide web-it will remain the language of science and technology.

The greatest legacy of the baby boom generation’s early adulthood has been that it asked all the right question but resolved nothing .Raised by parents whose sacrifices during the Great Depression and World War II purchased for us the luxury of being able to question , we all understood the standards from which some of were choosing deviate .
But riven by disagreement, we have encouraged our children to believe that there are no touchstones, no true answers, no commitments worthy of sacrifice .There are no firm principles. That for every cause there is a counter cause. That for every reason to fight there is a reason to run. That for every yin the there is a yang.
How will our children react to this philosophical quagmire? My bet is that will surprise us with their stability, that they will perhaps be slower to make commitments, bur more serious when they do.
Someone who has bounced between two parents will not marry with the thought that “we can always get a divorce if it doesn’t work.” Someone who has viewed the nightmarish results of political policies and recreational activities that were rather innocently begun will be more careful to consider the implications of new seductions at the outset. In the end, just as my tiny daughter eased my personal turmoil years ago, she and her contemporaries may become the arbiters of the generation that spawned them.
Thinking of these things as I sat in the quiet of her bedroom, listening to the yellow music box that still reminds me of the adoration in Amy’s eyes, I understood another truth: we, the members of a creative, sometimes absurd, always narcissistic postwar generation, will soon receive a judgment. Whatever it is, our children have earned the right to make it.

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of the field, as a final resting place for those who gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate—we can not consecrate—we can not hallow —this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have that for so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us— that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to the cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation , under God, shall a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, for the people, by the people shall not perish from the earth.

In the spirit of frankness which I hope will characterize our talk this week, let us recognize at the outset these points: We have at tim

es in the past been enemies. We have great differences today, what brings us together is that we have common interests which transcend those differences. As we discuss differences, either of us will compromise our principles. But while we can not close the gulf between us, we can try to bridge it so that we may be able to talk across it.
So, let us, in these next five days, start a long march together, not in lockstep, but on different roads leading to the same goal. The goal of building a world structure of peace and justice in which all may stand together with equal dignity and in which each nation, large or small, has a right to determine its own form of government, free of outside interference or domination. The world watches. The world listens. The world waits to see what we will do .What is the world? Ina personal sense, I think of my eldest daughter whose birthday is today. As I think of her, I think of all the children in the world, in Asia, in Africa, in Europe, in the Americans, most of whom were born since the date of the foundation of the People’s Republics of China.
What legacy shall we leave our children? Are they destined to die for the hatreds which have plagued the old world, or are they destined to live because we had the vision to build a new world?
