A

What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways ---or tools --- of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is no. It is not the tools that the scientist uses but how he use these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power saw is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further: He must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his question and that his answer can be confirmed(证实) by other persons. He also works to fit the answers he gets to many questions into a large set of ideas about how the world works.

The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration(说明)must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations(调查) are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy(精确) of his mathematics was later tested through investigation. Einstein’s ideas were shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurement. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.

56. According to the passage, ______ makes him a scientist.

A. the tools a scientist uses

B. a scientist’s way of thinking

C. the way a scientist uses his tools

D. the various tools a scientist uses

57. Knowing how to investigate and how to discover information shows ________.

A. can be proved through experiments

B. leaves no room for improvement

C. cannot be changed under any conditions

D. not only works under one set of conditions at one time but also works under the same

conditions at other times

59. The passage mainly tells us __________.

A. the importance of scientific research

B. scientists are hard working

C. what is a scientist and what is an ordinary person

D. that exactness and way of using tools are the key to making of a scientist

In July 1944 Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, was struck by 21 pieces of

a comet(彗星). When the fragment landed in the southern part of the giant planet, the

explosions were watched by scientists here on earth. But if our own planet was hit by a comet?

The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet is heading towards the earth.

Most of it will miss our planet, but two fragments will probably hit the southern part of the Earth. The news has caused a panic.

On 17 July, a fragment four kilometers wide enters the Earth’s atmosphere with a huge explosion. About half the fragment is destroyed. But the major part survives and hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and an enormous wave is created and spreads. The wall of water rushed towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned. The wave moves into the Indian Ocean and heads towards Asia.

Millions of people are already dead in the southern part of the Earth, but the north won’t escape for long. Tons of broken pieces are thrown into the atmosphere by the explosions. As the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperature around the world falls to almost zero. Crops are ruined. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later civilization has collapsed. No more than 10 million people have survived.

Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs were on the earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a space fragment. The dinosaurs couldn’t survive in the cold climate that followed and they became extinct. Will we meet the same end?

72. Which of the following is NOT TRUE according the author’s description of the

disaster in 2094?

A. The whole world becomes extremely cold

B. All the coastal cities in Africa are destroyed

C. The whole mankind becomes extinct

D. The visit of the comet results in wars

73. Why does the author mention dinosaurs at the end of the passage?

A. Because they could only live in the warm climate

B. Because they once dominated(控制) the earth

C. Because their extinction indicates future disasters

D. Because dinosaurs and humans never live in the same age

74. In writing the passage, the author intends to ________.

A. give an accurate description of the possible disaster in the future

B. prove that humans will sooner or later be destroyed

C. tell the historical development of the earth

D. warn of a possible disaster in the future

75. It can be concluded that the passage is most probably part of a(n) _________.

A. Horror story

B. news report

C. research paper

D. article of popular science

11.Which would you rather be, a mathematician or an author? Perhaps you will never be faced with this kind of choice. Lewis Carroll was both a mathematician and an author. He was a lecturer in mathematics at Oxford University. But he is better known as the author of the most famous children’s books that have ever been written: Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-glass. The author’s real name was Charles Lutwidge Dogson, but he preferred to use the penname “Lewis Carroll” when he wrote Alice and this is the name we remember him by, Alive in Wonderland was published in 1865, when its author was 33 years old. It was followed by Through the Looking-glass in 1871. Both books were written for a real girl called Alice and they have been read by millions of children since they were first published. These stories are about a dream world in which Alice meets strange creatures and has interesting adventures. I am sure you know this already, but if you don’t, you had better read the stories yourselves.
