What a Scientist Is Like

If you were asked to imagine a scientist, what image (形象)would come to your mind? The common idea that most kids from kindergarten through college have of a scientist is a man wearing a white lab coat with messy hair, big glasses, and several glass cups of mysterious color1 ful liquids giving off clouds of smoke. As for adults, the majority view scientists as strange people who spend 100 hours a week slaving away in a lonely laboratory. However, the reality is quite different.

Recently I’ve had a chance to take part in a scientific experience far from my laboratory and into Costa Rica. It supports a huge amount of wildlife due to its geographical placement between North and South America. It is home to more than 500,000 species (物种),which represents nearly 4% of the total species worldwide!

First we worked alongside conservationists to preserve wildlife at a leatherback turtle (棱皮龟)rescue center. We helped the volunteers preserve turtle populations by removing rubbish from the shoreline to create a safe environment for turtle eggs to come out. After that we stayed at Mount Arenal where we studied seismic activity relating to earthquakes. During our stay at Arenal, we rode over the mountainous areas and took a long walk through the rain forest. After reaching the top, we went down and through waterfalls to the beautiful valley below! On the last day we got a hands-on introduction to rocket science where we learned about new rocket technology that will be used on the international space station.

During my Costa Rica experience, I know that being a scientist doesn’t mean working in a lab all day and night. A scientist is one who loves learning and getting a better understanding of the world from helping preserve wild-life, learning about earthquakes or inventing rockets. I think that schools should really stress that science is so much more than wearing a lab coat and mixing chemicals. Kids need to be aware of the excitement and adventures science can bring!

A. to work as slaves

B. to behave in a strange way

22. The author helped to preserve the turtle population by .

A. creating a safe nest for turtles

B. picking up rubbish on the shoreline

C. collecting the turtle eggs on the beach

A. Science is full of boring experiments.

B. Science is more than working in a lab.

C. Science is related to mysterious liquids.

D. Science is about wildlife and earthquakes.

24. Why does the author write this passage?

A. To encourage kids to study science.

B. To tell the story of traveling in Costa Rica.

C. To expect more people to travel in Costa Rica.

D. To share the secrets behind science phenomena.

Turning the lights out or wearing a blindfold while eating could be a quick way to lose weight, according to scientists. The simple trick works because it stops diners eating for pleasure rather than for calories. It also triggers (引发) a part of the brain that is worried that unseen food may go bad.

An experiment by the University of Konstanz,in Germany, found that people who were blindfolded consumed nine percent fewer calories before they felt full, compared to those who could see. They also vastly overestimated how much they had eaten because they could not see how much was left on the plate.Blindfolded volunteers estimated they had eaten 88percent more than they actually had.Scientists believe that not seeing food on the table also allows the body to know when it is full in real time rather than remembering p ast experiences where it might have taken a full plate to feel full.

In the experiment,50 people were blindfolded and 40were allowed to see their food. All were told not to eat within two hours of the experiment. They were then given three 95g bowls of chocolate ice cream and invited to eat for 15minutes.Their bowls were taken away and the remaining ice﹣cream weighed, while the participants were quizzed on how much they thought they had eaten. On average the group who could see ate 116g while the blindfolded groups ate 105g.However,the blindfolded group believed they had eaten 197g while compared with 159g for the non﹣blind volunteers. They were also asked how pleasant the ice﹣cream tasted and the blindfolded group rated lower than those who could see.

"The experienced pleasure of eating was significantly lower in the blindfolded group. Not seeing the food might have decreased the appetite.Sight plays an important role in the eating ex perience and in the overall dining experience."

Edwarda O’Bara was a 17-year-old high school student in 1970 when she became sick from her diabetes(糖尿病)medication and slipped into a diabetic coma. Just before she lost consciousness, Edwarda asked her mother, Kaye O’Bara, to never leave her side, and her family never d id. Edwarda’s father, Joe O’Bara, and Kaye took care of their daughter—reading to her, playing her music, making sure she was turned every two hours, bathed, given insulin(胰岛素)and given nourishment through a feeding tube—until their deaths in 1976 and 2008, respectively. After that, Edwarda’s sister Colleen O’Bara took over. Her family’s unending care for her became a story told across the world. And visitors from across the world traveled to the Miami Gardens home every year, sometimes appearing at the doorstep on random days, other times for Edwarda’s yearly birthday party, a cheerful affair with decorations, balloons and cake. Through it all, Edwarda remained in a coma. But to her family and followers she remained alive. Colleen O’Bara described her as “the best sister in the whole wide world.” “She taught me so much, especially after she was in the coma, ” Colleen O’Bara said, “She taught me so much about unconditional love that I couldn’t say I had it before. She taught me about patience that I didn’t have before. I learned so much from taking care of my sister. It’s like I grew up overnight. ” In an announcement of Edwarda’s death posted Thursday on a website, Colleen O’Bara wrote: “Yesterday while taking care of Edwarda I noticed her looking directly a t me and gave me the biggest smile I had ever seen.
