II. Reading Comprehension (2’×15=30’)

Read the passage and complete each of the statements that follow. Write your answers on the Answer Sheet.

Passage One

Sylvester and I are watching television advertisements because we need information for a class research project. We have to discuss what is true and what is not true in television advertising, and so we are looking for examples of untruthful television commercials. The question we are asking is, "Is the commercial true to life, or does it offer an unreal picture of the product?"

Sylvester is keeping track of the falsehoods, and he already has quite a long list. He says that all housewives seem to live in lovely homes, dress beautifully, and love their household chores, they smile and boast about floor cleaners and proudly display their dirty laundry, dusty tabletops, and unclean ovens. In addition, he has never seen men doing housework. Sylvester thinks that this view of family life is filled with distortions.

I am keeping track of the people who appear in the advertisements. I have found handsome men chasing after the All-American Girl, and they are always recommending brand X toothpaste

or brand Y cologne (古龙水). I see teenagers and children surrounded by their friends, having a wonderful time at parties and at school, and they are usually enjoying large, friendly family gatherings. I think that these advertisements are also filled with fantasy.

Sylvester and I have concluded that much of American life is pictured unrealistically in commercials. Teenagers do not always have fun at parties, and very few people love doing chores. People do have problems but few of these are ever shown in commercials. Instead, we watch Cinderella discover a miracle floor wax, finish the kitchen chores, and go dancing. Our heads are filled with these fantasies, and they also suggest that, for any problem, brand Z will provide the instant cure. Sylvester and I will have very few facts and a lot of fantasy to write about in our research reports.

11. Judging from the context, the relationship between the author and Sylvester is most probably

that of _____.

A. research workers

B. a professor and a student

C. a father and a son

D. classmates

12. According to Sylvester, what can be inferred about housewives in advertisements?

A. They are sad and tired.

B. They enjoy doing their housework.

C. They always have their husbands help them.

D. They never touch dirty things

13. The author thinks that life of teenagers shown in commercials is _____.

A. incomplete

B. unrealistic

C. true to life

D. boring

14. Sylvester and the author have come to the conclusion that commercials _____.

A. are just like American life

B. are not interesting or entertaining

C. are not much like American life

D. are fun for children

15. The most suitable title for the passage is _____.

A. A Class Research Project on TV

B. American Life to Be Shown

C. Children Like to See Advertisements

D. Distortions in TV Advertising

Passage Two

Christmas was coming. I wanted a pony. To make sure that my parents understood, I declared that I wanted nothing else, though I did want a pair of high boots.

On Christmas Eve I hung up my stocking along with those of my sisters.

The next morning my sisters and I woke up at six. Then we raced downstairs to the fireplace. And there they were: the gifts, all sorts of wonderful things. Only my stocking was empty. My sisters were crying with delight till they found me standing there looking so miserable. My sisters and I all cried till I became indignant. That helped some. I drove my sisters away; I went out alone into the stable and wept. My mother tried to comfort me. But I wanted no comfort at that moment

I felt I was hurt. And my father must have been hurt, too. I saw him watching me or something through the window for an hour or two, with a look of anxiety on his face.

After an hour or two, I caught sight of a man riding a pony down the street. But the man came along, reading the numbers on the houses. He looked at our door and passed by. I fell upon the steps and burst into tears. Soon the man on the pony came back again. After making sure that I was the very boy named Lennie Steffens,he gave it to me, saying something about “ought to have got here at seven o’clock, but—”

I hardly heard, and I could scarcely wait. I was so happy, so thrilled. I rode off up the street.

But that Christmas, which my father had planned so carefully, was it the best or the worst I ever knew? He often asked me that; I never could answer as a boy. I think now that it was both. It covered the whole distance from broken-hearted misery to bursting happiness—too fast. A grown-up could hardly have stood it.

16. Which of the following statements about the man riding on the pony is NOT true?

A) It was not easy for him to find Lennie Steffens’ home.

B) He had never met Lennie Steffens before.

C) He dressed himself as Father Christmas.

D) He should have arrived earlier.

17. Having found that I hadn’t gotten my gift, all of my family members came to comfort me except______.

A) one of my sisters B) all of my sisters

C) my mother D) my father

18. What is the possible meaning of the underlined word “indignant” in Paragraph 3?

A) Angry. B) Depressed.

C) Impatient. D) Joyous.

19. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A) On Christmas Eve Lennie Steffens did not hang up his stocking along with his sisters’.

B) Lennie Steffens was the only boy in the family.

C) The delivery of the Christmas gift for the boy was delayed as planned.

D) Lennie Steffens didn’t want boots at all.

20. What is the best title for the passage?

C) A Miserable, Merry Christmas D) A Pony

Passage Thre e

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labor through your work, you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people, the peak comes during the forenoon. For others, it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues (自言自语) as: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.

You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam (振作, 奋发) and work better at your low point.

Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.

21. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably ________.

A) he is a lazy person

B) he refuses to follow his own energy cycle

C) he is not sure when his energy is low

D) he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening

22. Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the passage?

A) Unawareness of energy cycles.

B) Familiar monologues.

C) A change in a family member’s energy cycle.

D) Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family members.

23. If one wants to work more efficiently at his low point in the morning, he should ________.

A) change his energy cycle B) overcome his laziness

C) get up earlier than usual D) go to bed earlier

24. You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will ________.

A) help to keep your energy for the day’s work

B) help you to control your temper early in the day

C) enable you to concentrate on your routine work

D) keep your energy cycle under control all day

25. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?

A) Getting off to work with a minimum effort helps save one’s energy.

B) Dr. Kleitman explains why people reach their peaks at different hours of day.

C) Habits help a person adapt to his own energy cycle.

D) Children have energy cycles, too.
