A

Sleeping in Class

I can still remember it as if it happened yesterday. I was a college freshman and had stayed up most of the night before laughing and talking with friends. Now just before my first class of the day my eyelids were feeling heavier and heavier and my head was drifting down to my desk to make my textbook a pillow. A few minutes nap time before class couldn’t hurt, I thought.

BOOM! My head jerked up and my eyes opened wider than saucers. I looked around with my heart beating quickly trying to find the cause of the noise. My young professor was looking back at me with a mischievous, boyish grin on his face. He had intentionally dropped the pile of textbook he was carrying onto his desk. “Good morning!”,he said, still smiling. “I am glad to see everyone is awake. Now let’s get started.”

For the next hour I wasn’t sleep at all. It wasn’t from the shock of my professor’s textbook alarm clock either. It was instead from the fascinating discussion he led. With knowledge and good humor he made the material come alive. His insights were full of both wisdom and loving-kindness. And the enthusiasm and joy that he tanght with were contagious(有感染力的).I left the classroom not only wide awake, but a little smarter and a little better as well.

I learned something far more important than not sleeping in class that day too. I learned that if you are

going to do something in this life, do it well, do it with joy, and make it an expression of your love. What a glorious place this world be if all of us did our work joyously and well. What a beautiful world we could create if every doctor, teacher, musician, preacher, cook, mechanic, waitress, businessman, fisherman, poet, miner, farmer, and laborer made their work an expression of their love. Don’t sleepwalk your way through life then. Wake up ! Let your love fill your work and love fill your soul. Life is too short not to live it well. 56.What happened to the student just before his first class of the day?

C.The professor often kept his students sharp by using a textbook alarm.

D.The student left the two-hour period not only wide awake, but a little smarter.

59.What else did the student learn that day ?

A.People from all walks of life should do their jobs with wisdom and love.

B.Everyone should love his job and sleepwalk his way through life.

C.Students should not sleep in class and they should respect their teachers.

D.Life is too limited to make your work an expression of your love.

Why should ear, nose, tongue and eyes be called special senses? The basic reason is that these are the channels through which we maintain contact with the surroundings. Though apparently it may feel like these are individual sensory organs, they do show some connections. Interestingly, our hearing is less sharp after we eat a heavy food. Isn’t it good for a sound nap after a stomach-full meal? That does not mean we go deaf after a heavy meal, but the hearing pitch(强度)does change after that.

We usually owe it to our tongue that we have taste, but do you know that unless saliva(唾液)dissolves something, our tongue cannot recognize the taste of the food eaten. Taste is nothing but the food chemicals dissolved in the saliva being sensed by the taste buds present on the tongue. Try to dry off your tongue and

mouth with a tissue paper and then taste something.

Woman are much better smellers than man. They are born with this characteristic ability and can correctly make out the exact fragrance of the sample. We all can store almost 50,000 different scents, which are strongly tied to the memories.

Pupils(瞳孔)do not respond to light alone, but to the slightest bit of noise around too. Thus surgeons, watchmakers and those professionals who have to perform a very delicate job do prefer to have a sound-free environment. Even a small noise can enlarge their pupils, change the focus and make them see less clearly.

Each and every one of us has an individualistic or characteristic smell, which is unique to us, except for the identical twins. This smell isn’t very noticeable yet can be sensed even by a newborn. It may be due to this scent that the newborn recognizes the presence of his parents around. Many of us can point out the smell of our significant friends and colleagues. This is guided, to a great degree, by genetics but it is also influenced by the environment, diet and so on. This all together creates the unique chemistry that is individualistic for each person.

60.What may happen after you have had a rich lunch?

A.Your eyes become weak and can’t see well.

B.You may feel fresher and more energetic.

C.Your hearing pitch may be decreased.

D.Your tongue may lose the function of taste.

61.We can infer from the underlined sentence that __________.

A.your tongue must be dried so as to taste something.

B.if your tongue is dried without any saliva on it, it will not work.

C.your tongue alone can recognize the taste of food eaten.

D.if your tongue is dried with a tissue paper, it may work as well as before.

62.What makes each person different from anyone else except for twins according to the passage?

A.The particular smell of a person.

B.The characteristics of a person.

C.The style of one’s behavior.

D.The ability to distinguish various scents.

63.Which of the following may be the best title of this passage?

A.The Sensitivity of Sensory Organs

B.The Functions and Connections of Sensory Organs

C.A Newborn’s Sensory Organs

D.Different Senses Between Men and Woman

C

Mom was right! If you say thank you, for even the smallest gift or slightest show of kindness, you’ll fell happy.

Gratitude(感谢), says Robert A. Emmons, a professor of psychology at the University of California, is an extremely important element of happiness, In his most recent book, Thanks! (Houghton Mifflin, $30.95), Emmons uses the first major study on gratitude to prove mom’s point. In acknowledging and promoting this much-ignored expression of thankfulness, he explains how people have benefited —even improved their health.

As one of the leading scholars of the positive psychology movement, he admits gratitude may be difficult to express. He recommends you begin by acknowledging that life is good and full of events and elements that make daily existence a wonder.

Second, recognize that the source of life’s goodness is more than just you. That source may be your mom, a friend, partner, child, colleague at work or play, a caregiver or God —or any combination of these.

Expressing gratitude should not be a reaction. Instead, it should be a state of mind, To feel grateful when life is a breeze and you have more than what you need is easy, To be grateful in times of crisis —anger, hatred and bitterness—is easier. Also, too many people are aware of life’s blessings only after these are lost.

It’s crisis and chaos—danger, disease, disability and death — that bring many individuals to realize just how dependent they are o n others. Yet it’s the way each of us begins life and ends it. It’s too hard that so many people waste those decades in between laboring under the illusion(幻觉)that they are self-sufficient, says Emmons.

I’m not a reader or advocate of self-help books, but I am thankful for the reference I found in a newspaper article to the research Emmons was conducting on gratitude involving organ donors and recipients(接受者). The chance discovery led me to this book.

Mom implied that kindness seems to find its way back to the giver because life really is all about giving, receiving and repaying. So I’ll follow her advice and say: Thank you, Professor Emmons. 64.What is mainly discussed in the text?

A.Being thankful will keep you fit.

B.Mom is great for her being thankful.

C.There are many ways of being thankful.

D.Gratitude is of vital importance to happiness.

65.It will be easier for you to feel grateful when

A.you live a comfortable life

B.you receive gifts on your birthday

C.you get help during your hard times

D.you are congratulated on your success

66.Mom may most probably agree with the following point that .

A.it is easy to express your gratitude

B.kindness may somehow be repaid

C.people should always think of giving rather than receiving

D.only deeds like organ donation are worth your gratitude

How do people analyze and solve worry problem? The answer is that we must equip ourselves to deal with different kinds of worries by learning the three basic steps of problem analysis. The three steps are: Get the facts

Why is it so important to get the facts? Unless you have the facts, you can’t possibly attempt to solve your problem intelligently. Without the facts, all you can do is wandering around in confusi on. It’s not an easy job to get facts. When you are worried, your emotions are riding high.

71 .

When trying to get the facts, you can pretend that you are collecting this information not for yourself but for some other person. 72 You can also pretend that you are a lawyer preparing to agree. Try to get all the facts both on your side and the other side of the case. You will generally find the truth lies somewhere in between.

73

Whenever you are worried, write down the questions that make you worry. And write out all the various steps you could take and then the probable consequences of each step. For example, what am I worrying about? What can I do about it? Here is what I am going to do about it. After carefully weighing all the facts, you can calmly come to a decision.

Act on that decision

74 How can you break the worry habit before it breaks you? Crowd worry out of your mind by keeping busy. Plenty of action is one of the best ways to cure worry. 75

If you know a situation is beyond your power, say to yourself:“It is so; it cannot be otherwise.”

Don’t permit little things to ruin your happiness. Try to cultivate a mental attitude that will bring you peace

and happiness.

A.Accept what cannot be avoided.

B.There comes a time when you must decide and never look back!

C.But here are two ideas that can help you see the facts in a clear and objective way.

D.Unless you take your action, all your fact-finding and analysis is a sheer waste of energy.

E.Decide how much anxiety a thing may be worth.

F.This will help you to take a cold and fair view of the evidence.

G.Analyze the facts.

Moreover, in the other class, another student used a brush to paint so beautiful the landscape that I had a true scene in my mind. As it is often the case, we did things as told before. We may make fewer mistakes and achieve success by following which we have known or learnt. But take it serious that we need to make a change and try something new, and we will never make a breakthrough. In my opinion, we should get out our thinking limits and have new ways to do things in order to have greater success.

Where does the passage most probably come from? A. A travel guidebook B. An entertainment magazine C. A science fiction D. A history textbook B On the morning of May 20, 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh Jr. took off from a muddy airfield in New York and headed for Paris. During the first fourteen hours of flying, he had had some anxious moments. Sleet had gathered on the wings of the plane and the fog was so thick that he could hardly see the tips of the wings. However, he had come across equally dangerous flying conditions before. Of course, now that he was over the ocean, his parachute(降落伞)was useless. He had only one choice: he had to go on. Although he had waited a long time to make this trip, he did not feel strange or nervous. He was accustomed to flying alone, and he had flown this route in his imagination many times. The idea of flying across the Atlantic had occurred to him one night when he had been carrying the mail between St. Louis and Chicago. That night, he told himself that a solo non-stop flight between New York and Paris was possible. He knew that airplanes capable of making the long flight over the ocean could be built. A man of skill and endurance could make his dream come true. As he was recalling that night, he reduced the altitude of the plane. Close to the surface of the ocean, he found that the ice on the wings began to melt and the fog disappeared. For the time being, at least, he was safe. The steady sound of the motor seemed like music in his ears. He had perfect confidence in his plane because he knew that there was not a more dependable plane than his. The Ryan Aircraft Company had constructed the plane to meet his special needs. He had worked with the chief engineer of the company, Donald Hall, to produce the airplane as rapidly as possible. Although Hall had worked with the basic design of the Ryan airplane, he had had to make many modifications. As a result, it was a very special airplane. He had named it “The Spirit of St. Louis,” in honour of the St. Louis businessmen whose
