初中生英语诗歌欣赏与教学的尝试

-----以Shel Silverstein的幻想绘本三部曲为例

[摘要]本文分析了英语诗歌教学在基础教育阶段不受重视的原因,并且以Shel Silverstein的三部作品为例,阐述了英语诗歌教学的意义和其必要性。选用合适的英语诗歌进行教学可以培养学生听、说、读、写、译各方面的能力;诗歌欣赏能够培养学生英语学习兴趣,提高学生的文化素养和语言运用能力。

一、引言

诗歌是语言艺术的精华,它不仅语言凝练、韵律感强、意境优美,而且渗透了大量的英语语言文化内容和人文底蕴,是不可或缺的教学资源。英语新课程标准在课程目标总体描述和内容标准等多方面对中小学诗歌教学都做了阐述,提出了要求:如三级能辨认歌谣中的韵律,能背诵一定数量的英语小诗或歌谣;七级能够理解和欣赏一些经典的英语诗歌;八级了解诗歌的节奏和韵律等。

然而,英语诗歌作为一种很好的目标语学习资源在我国的基础英语教学中却没有得到应有的开发和利用。如在全国大部分学校使用的人教社初中英语教材Go for it(新目标)中,就几乎没有诗歌内容的出现。除了教材资源不丰富外,教师的认识也有待提高,有的老师或许会认为英语诗歌难懂,英语诗歌欣赏是大学文学课的任务,要中学生去欣赏英语诗歌未免有些勉为其难。另外评价和测试的不到位也影响了学生学习和老师教授的积极性。

笔者在教学中以美国作家Shel Silverstein的幻想三部曲,即Where the Sidewalk Ends (人行道的尽头),A Light in the Attic(阁楼上的光)和Falling Up (向上跌了一跤)为主要教学资料,尝试了英语诗歌欣赏的教学,取得了良好的效果。笔者认为在英语学习基础阶段选用合适、地道的英语诗歌进行教学,对于提高学生的听、说、读、写、译等语言技能起着积极的作用。它能激发学生对语言本身的兴趣和热爱,也能提高学生的文化素养和语言运用能力。

二、诗歌与英语教学

1. 用诗歌来进行听、说训练

语感是指透过语言形式对语义的直觉性理解,是对语言的自我感受和领悟能力,是一种理性的直觉。“熟读唐诗三百首,不会作诗也会吟”,是我国先人总结出来的一句很经典的学习经验,它揭示了诵读诗歌对语感形成的作用。诗歌是语言的精华,是语言的音乐,对任何语言教学(母语或外语)来说,都是一块不可多得的“熟读”和“背诵”的资源。

集诗人、漫画家、作曲家、歌手等于一身的Shel是享誉世界的艺术天才,他的这三本著作被公认为是美国儿童诗歌的经典之作。书中优美的语言再加上栩栩如生的漫画,不光让小孩着迷,就连大人们看过也会爱不释手。他的很多诗都配了曲,适合演唱,《人行道的尽头》同名唱片还获得过1984年格莱美奖。所以我经常挑选一些歌曲来作课前热身或课间放松,和学生们一起吟唱,创造学英语的氛围。

Shel 的作品与小孩子的生活紧密联系,容易引起他们的共鸣,如Homework Machine (作业机),Magical Eraser(魔术橡皮),Crazy Dream(怪梦)等;他也有很多作品充满了哲理,发人深思,如Little Boy and the Old Man(孩子和老人),No difference(都一样),A cat, a kid and a Mom(猫、孩子和妈妈)等。这些都是能够激发学生思维,可供学生来讨论的素材。欣赏完每首诗后,我通常都会叫学生用英语来谈谈自己对诗的理解和感想。同学们联系自己的

实际,都愿意说,有话说,锻炼了他们口语表达能力。

我也经常选用其中的一些小诗来帮助学生进行练习发音。如在学完双元音[?u]后,我选了一首诗My beard:

My beard grows to my toes,

I never wears no clothes,

I wraps my hair,

Around my bare,

And down the road I goes.

诗中押韵的是[?u]这个双元音,对于双元音,看似简单,其实大多数中国学生不容易发准确。我一边放录音,一边要求学生仔细揣摩、模仿,同时告诉他们发这个音的几个技巧,如嘴巴要张大,声音要拖长,音要发得饱满等。然后要学生一个个站起来模仿磁带进行比赛,看谁模仿得最像。这样一来,枯燥的发音练习变得活泼、生动、有意义,充满了乐趣。

2. 用诗歌来提高阅读能力

要提高学生的阅读能力首先要提高他们的阅读兴趣。Shel的书是美国小孩必读书之一,他的诗集绘本幽默温馨,简单的插图和浅显的文字勾画出一个充满想像力的童稚世界,而其中又充满淡淡的人生讽刺与生活哲学,他的作品被翻译成30多种语言,受到儿童们的喜欢。如有Carrots这样一首诗:

They say that carrots are good for your eyes,

They swear that they improve your sight,

But I’m seein’ worse than I did last night---

You think maybe I ain’t using ‘em right?

诗旁边有一副漫画,画的是一个小孩把两只胡萝卜插到了眼睛里,虽然看上去有些荒诞,但在读过诗、看过图画之后又的确让人忍俊不禁。其实学生只要用心地读其中的一首诗,都会继续读下去,慢慢喜欢上了他的书,阅读的兴趣就这样建立了起来。

阅读的基础单词,单词和词组呈现方式多种多样,记忆的方式也是因人而异。传统的死记硬背的词汇学习方式费时多,容易忘,往往是记住了也不会用;在语境中学习词汇的理念已经得到诸多语言学家的认可。诗歌里面都很多地道的词汇和表达法,通过背诵并内化,学会举一反三是较好的词汇和短语学习方法。比如有一首诗Whatif,其中有几句是这样写的:Whatif I'm dumb in school?

Whatif they've closed the swimming pool?

Whatif I get beat up?

Whatif there's poison in my cup?

Whatif I flunk that test?

Whatif green hair grows on my chest?

Whatif nobody likes me?

Whatif a bolt of lightning strikes me?

诗里面的单词dumb, 词组a bolt of lightning, 搭配beat up, flunk the test, 都是很地道的表达法,通过阅读、积累,相信不管是对于学生以后的学习,还是生活都会很有帮助。

3. 用诗歌来进行写作教学

语音语调需要模仿,写作也可从模仿开始,仿写在提高写作能力方面已被证明具有十分积极的作用。能作为仿写的篇章很多,英语诗歌无疑是一块很好的仿写资源。我们可以让学生在欣赏之余、在意犹未尽之时,充分发挥他们的想象力和创造力,从各自的角度去观察、思考、写作,当一回“诗人”,过一把“诗瘾”。如有Who 这首诗:

Who can kick a football

From here out to Afghanistan?

I can

Who fought tigers in the street

While all the policemen ran and hid?

I did

Who will fly and have X-ray eyes---

And be known as the man no bullet can kill?

I will

Who can sit and tell lies all night?

I might

学完这首诗后,我叫同学们按照这首诗的结构,充分发挥自己的想象写一写,因为这首诗是讲吹牛的,所以同学们都很感兴趣,有个同学这样写道:

Who can throw a rock

From here out to the sun?

I can

Who fought kids in the school

While all the teachers ran and hid?

I did

Who will fly and have super power

And nobody can kill?

I will

Who can sit and tell lies all night?

I might

最后我叫学生把自己写的诗念出来交流,气氛也是异常热闹,写出来的句子也是五花八门,有些句子或许不是太押韵或者符合语法规则,但学生的写作兴趣有了,并且学会了一些表达法和结构。

三、引导学生欣赏英语诗歌

1. 诗歌的韵律美

押韵是指重复元音或辅音以达到一定音韵效果的诗歌写作手法。英语诗歌和中国的诗歌一样有押韵的美,如头韵、尾韵等,这些都比较好理解。在这三本书中,Shel 把很多故事写成了诗歌的形式,读起来朗朗上口,充满了韵律美。如Unicorn(独角兽),Cloony the Clown (小丑克鲁), Pinocchio(匹诺曹)等。如Pinocchio这首诗的前几句这样写到:Pinocchio, Pinocchio,

That little wooden bloke-io,

His nose, it grew an inch or two

With every lie he spoke-io.

Pinocchio, Pinocchio,

Though life was just a joke-io,

‘Til the mornin’ that he met that cat

And the fox in a long red cloak-io

匹诺曹的故事学生们都已经很熟悉了,但诗歌的形式更简洁、语言更精炼,特别是尾韵读起来前后呼应,别有一番趣味。

2. 诗歌的节奏美

英语诗歌中单词的重读与非重读,朗诵时的快与慢给诗歌带来了音乐性和节奏美。我们大可不必跟同学讲格律、抑扬格或扬抑格等专业术语。拿到一首诗,我通常让学生根据句子的意思和自己的理解,尝试着自己去读一读,然后老师可以给与指导。最后让他们听听原版的录音,比较一下有什么不一样。如Where the sidewalk ends中的第一首诗Invitation:

If you are a dreamer, come in

If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar,

A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer…

If you’re a pretender, come sit by my fire,

For we have some flax golden tales to spin.

Come in!

Come in!

在磁带里,诗的前三句读的速度逐渐加快,表达了迫不及待的意思。第四行较轻、较慢,仿佛在邀请你:坐到我的旁边来吧,炉子里面生着火,听我给你讲故事。后面几句说得比较有诱惑力,来吧、来吧,让人无法抗拒。配以磁带里的背景钟声和音乐,让人有身临其境的感觉,这又是光看诗、读诗所不能体会到的,我们还需要听诗。

3. 诗歌的想象丰富

想象力在这几本书中是最不缺乏的部分, Shel 塑造了一些经典的形象:如懒懒地躺在地上等雨来解渴的Jane;为了得到奶昔而摇奶牛的Geraldine;被宠坏了的Brat等。任何孩子想得到,大人已经遗忘的,都可以在这本书里找到。他的诗配上插图,以极其简单的线条和文字留给人们无尽的思考。如A Light in the Attic这样写道:

There is a light in the attic,

Though the house is dark and shutter,

I can see a flickerin’ flutter,

And I know what it’s about,

There’a a light on in the attic,

I can see it from the outside,

And I know you’re on the inside…lookin’ out.

“阁楼”到底是什么,每个人可能都有不同的理解,但从配的图来看,又似乎是大脑中的某片记忆。Shel的字里行间无一不透露出单纯的孩子气,他的思想卓越又平凡,普通的孩童生活,荒诞离奇的想法,都体现了他无限的想象力,语句平凡但是却透露出深深的哲理,发人深省。

4. 诗歌的翻译美

翻译是一门艺术,是语言艺术的再创作。翻译并不比创作容易,有时甚至更难。有时候读了原诗,我会叫学生尝试着翻译成汉语,最后我找来了专家的翻译让他们比较、讨论。很显然,有的中文翻译也很出彩。如有Early Bird 这首诗和翻译:

Oh, if you’re a bird, be an early bird

And catch the worm for your breakfast plate.

If you’re a bird, be an early bird—

But if you’re a worm, sleep late.

喔,如果你是小鸟,你一定要起早,

把那虫虫捉到,好把早饭吃饱。

如果你是小鸟,你一定要起早,

可如果你是虫虫,最好睡个懒觉。

不光是英翻中,其实一些诗歌的中翻英也是很经典。如我给学生找来了许渊冲翻译的《春

晓》,读起来又何尝不是一种享受。

A spring morning

This morn of spring in bed I’m lying,

Not woke up till I hear birds crying,

After one night of wind and showers,

How many are the fallen flowers.

有时我也会给学生讲成为一名优秀的翻译所要具备的素质,如汉语功底要好、英语语言能力要强、知识面要广等,这样可以激发一部分同学学习英语的理想与热情。

四、结束语

Shel 的诗适合当作拓展教学资源,但对于我们以非英语为母语的学生来说,需要我们老师在了解原著的基础上,做适当的选择、调整,甚至是改编。当然除了Shel的诗外,还有很多诗也可以作为学生课外阅读材料,需要我们老师去发现,整理和尝试。总之,初中阶段的诗歌欣赏和教学,应该是一个入门阶段和培养兴趣的时候,我们应充分利用英语诗歌教学这个载体来教授学生语言知识,同时提高学生文化修养和语言运用能力。

浅谈一节英语公开课上的英语诗歌教学 随着新课程标准总目标的调整,英语基础教学的目的也更趋向于多元化。课堂教学由原来的一味的教和学,也就是“师者,传到授业解惑也”,到素质教育,也就是更注重能力的培养。教育部(2012:8)更明确提出“通过英语学习,使学生形成初步的综合语言运用能力,促使心智发展,提高综合人文素养。”这个要求,使英语基础教学,在原有侧重英语作为一门学科,一种语言工具的基础上,更加注重了英语作为语言学习能力的培养。 诗歌,是世界上所有语言艺术形式中,最为与众不同的,除了它韵律优美,同时还集中体现了该种语言的历史背景、人文素养等,这些因素使学生对于英语诗歌望而却步。现在初中牛津英语教课书中,增加了诗歌篇幅,就是让学生能在课堂上慢慢接触诗歌题材,让他们了解诗歌并没有想象中的那么难。 一、引导学生对诗歌的理解 (一)从牛津英语的全六册,研究诗歌体裁课文的分布及难易度 对于初中生来说,初次接触英语诗歌,要从言简意赅的诗歌开始,好比刚开始学说话的幼儿一样,先用一些朗朗上口的儿歌,在反复朗读的过程中,慢慢理解并感受儿歌所传递的内容。有了一定的基础后,慢慢增加难度。回想笔者自己英语学习过程,诗对于从来没有直接就是莎士比亚。歌是到了大学才开始接触的,

接触过诗歌的人来说,一下子接触这么高深的内容,让人感觉有点无从入手。 所以,早在7B第八单元,学生就学过两篇关于动物的诗歌,其中一首的一段是这样的: My goldfish is a wonderful pet. She doesn't need a bed. She isn't any trouble. She doesn't bark. She doesn't miaow. Just bubbles, Bubbles, Bubbles. 这是学生第一次遇到英语诗歌,文字简单直白,以描述场景为主,有的句子以一个单词单独成句成行,除了降低难度,降低学生对英语诗歌的恐惧外,大大吸引了学生的兴趣。原来英语诗歌没那么难,英语诗歌也有押韵,只不过是因为语法问题,没法做到文字的对应和工整。 因为有了那次诗歌体裁的内容,为学生打下了一定的基础,同时,学生的认知水平、对语言文字的赏析能力,随着年龄的增长,而有所长进。所以,在8A第7单元的诗歌,其中一段是这样的:,The autumn leaves turn brown Fall into piles upon the ground.

英语诗歌欣赏

英语诗歌入门

英语诗歌入门诗歌是纯文学。英美文学传统中此种文学形式十分繁荣,在这方面甚至可与被称为“诗的国度”的中国相提并论。正如学习汉语不明诗词歌赋为何物,就难入佳境一样,学习英文而不解诗味,也堪称憾事。然而,由于用词典雅、句法精炼、形式别致以及意象丰富等等缘故,英文诗号称难读。本课程精选莎士比亚以来名家名诗数十首,解其句读,析其格律,达其妙趣,并判其风格,使初学者尝其一脔,略知滋味,并望其由此获得进入英诗宝库之门径。 导引 诗歌是一种精美的艺术,趣味高一点的人一般都喜欢诗歌。受过良好教育的中国人都会背诵若干首古诗。现在人们很重视学习英文,学习英文,视野也应宽阔一些,也应当对英文诗歌多少有些领略才好。中国文学中诗歌成就极大,英语文学中,诗歌也极其丰富多彩。语言艺术的最高表现形式在诗歌。如果只是知道实用性的英文,只学习商业英文、法律英文等英文,对英语文学毫无修养,对英文诗歌一无所知,那将是一个不小的遗憾,将会影响到审美能力的发展和提高, 学英文而不懂英文诗歌,不仅从审美角度看是一个遗憾,而且从英语学习这一角度看,不学一些英文诗歌,其英语水平也达不到很高的层次。诗歌语言最精炼,语汇最丰富,表达形式最精美,语言的色调最细腻。如果对诗歌有一定修养,其语言表达能力会大大提高。试想一个学汉语的人,如果对唐诗宋词一无所知,其汉语水平不会很高。学英语者也是如此。如果他对莎士比亚、弥尔顿、华兹华斯、拜伦、雪莱、济慈等人的著名诗篇一窍不通,其英文水平也不会很高。 总之,有一定英语基础的人不能不更上一层楼,读一点英文诗。这不仅有助于提高我们的文学素养,丰富我们的审美能力,也有助于提高我们的英语水平。 英诗基础知识 读英文诗歌相当不容易。其中的主要原因是诗歌有其独特的语言特点和表达方式,与散文有明显区别。为更好地欣赏英文诗歌,很有必要了解一些相关的基本知识。这方面的知识极其细致,以下只介绍一些最基本的。 一节奏 诗歌是具有音乐性的语言。音乐作品的最大特点之一是音符的流动是有节奏的。所谓节奏就是强拍和弱拍按一定的形式配合起来,有规律地反复出现。懂点音乐的人都知道,音乐中基本的节奏有两种,即强——弱(2/4拍)和强——弱——弱(3/4拍)。举两个简单的例子: 《东方红》的节奏就是强——弱: 5 56│2 —│1 16│2 —│5 5│6i 65│1 16│2 —│ 《新年好》(HAPPY NEW YEAR)这首儿歌的节奏是强——弱——弱: 11 1 5 │33 3 1│13 5 5 │43 2 —│23 4 4 │32 3 1│13 2 5│72 1 —│ 中国古诗有节奏。其节奏主要是通过汉字特有的声调表现出来的。传统汉语中的声调有四:平、上、去、入。平声称“平声”,上、去、入三声统称仄声。平声与仄声结合起来反复出现,就是中国诗歌的节奏。如一首五言绝句,其最常见的节奏是: 仄仄平平仄,平平仄仄平。

英语诗歌的韵律(metre)英诗节奏(Rhythm) 构成英诗节奏的基础是韵律(metre)。在希腊语中,“metre”这个字是“尺度(标谁)”的意思。英诗就是根据诗行中的音节和重读节奏作为“尺度(标准)”来计算韵律的。 英诗的特点之一是与其他文体不同的排列格式。各诗行不达到每页页边,每行开始词首大写。几行成为一节(stanza),不分段落。各行都要讲究一定的音节数量,行末押韵或不押韵,交错排列。 ……音节重读(stressed),非重读(unstressed)。……这就是一种正规的重读形式,在诗歌中即体现为韵律。研究诗歌韵律规则的科学叫作韵律学(Prosody)。 1.音步(Foot): 英诗中这种重读与非重读音节的特殊性组合叫作音步。一个音步的音节数量可能为两个或三个音节,但不能少于两个或多于三个音节,而且其中只有一个必须重读。分析英诗的格律就是将它划分成音步,并区分出是何种音步以及计算音步的数量。这种音步划分叫scansion。根据一首英诗组成的音步数量,每一诗行一个音步称“单音步”(monometer);每一诗行有两个音步的,称“双音步”(dimeter);含有三个音步的,称“三音步”(trimeter);此外还有四音步(tetrameter)、五音步、(pentameter)、六音步(hexameter)、七音步(heptameter)、八音步(octometer)。 Is this | a fast, | to keep
