star Pele stood only 5 feet 9 and weighed only 160 pounds.

For all this, football players, 11 to a side, give an exhibition of(5)

and strength hard to match. With all parts of their body except

their hands they (6)the ball with a kind of dancing-master's ability. They run back and forth at (7) speed for two halves of 45 minutes. There are no time-outs (暂停) except for serious (8) .

For their performances, star players receive (9)of millions of dollars a season. But they are (10) . When a club pays millions for a great player, it may get back about ten times that in ticket sales and advertising.

Questions 11 to 20 are based on the following passage or dialog.

Today, the fight against doping (用兴奋剂) is a continuous battle that is possible to win with international efforts.

Doping is defined as the (11) , whether substance or method, potentially dangerous to athletes' (12)and capable of enhancing their performance, or the presence in the athlete's body of a substance, or the use of a (13)on the list attached to the Olympic Movement Anti-Doping Code (法规).

Doping is completely against the spirit of the Olympic Games: the (14)game. Many of the banned substances and methods are dangerous to athletes' health and can cause short- and (15) damage.

Athletes must be very careful about any medicines they are taking, because many common (16) , such as pain-killers, can contain banned substances. If a competitor wants to use a banned substance for treatment, he or she must get the (17) approval of the Medical Advisory (咨询) Committee of the IOC Medical Commission (委员会).

If an athlete tests (18)in the Olympic Games, he/she will be

Perhaps second only to the question "Are we there yet?" parents on vacation with their children hate hearing "I think I'm gonna be sick!" as they (21)along the highway.

Car sickness can make family vacations unfortunate for both(22)and the rest of the family. Motion sickness, which includes car sickness, sea sickness and air sickness, affects most people to (23) degrees. Symptoms range from a (24) feeling of discomfort to nausea (恶心) and vomiting (呕吐).

Doctors at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas say the discomfort results from (25)messages being sent to the brain. The brain relies on messages from the inner ear, the muscles and the eyes to tell it where the body is in space. When any of these body parts send different messages, the brain gets

(26) , and you get queasy For example, if you're

reading in the car, your inner ear knows you're moving, but your muscles think you're sitting still and your eyes don't see anything moving because they're looking at the page. On an airplane, your inner ear senses the motion, but your eyes only see the inside of the airplane, which looks (27) .

Treatments for motion sickness range from (28) remedies (疗法) like ginger (生姜) capsules (胶囊) to medicine. If you suffer from motion sickness, try sitting in the front seat of the car, (29) reading while in the car, and look out the front window rather than the side windows. On a plane, pick a seat over a (30) . On

world. They (31) , educate, and examine the events of the day.

Unit1 Americans believe no one stands still. If you are not moving ahead, you are falling behind. This attitude results in a nation of people committed to researching, experimenting and exploring. Time is one of the two elements that Americans save carefully, the other being labor. "We are slaves to nothing but the clock,” it has been said. Time is treated as if it were something almost real. We budget it, save it, waste it, steal it, kill it, cut it, account for it; we also charge for it. It is a precious resource. Many people have a rather acute sense of the shortness of each lifetime. Once the sands have run out of a person’s hourglass, they cannot be replaced. We want every minute to count. A foreigner’s first impression of the U.S. is li kely to be that everyone is in a rush -- often under pressure. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going, restlessly seeking attention in a store, or elbowing others as they try to complete their shopping. Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace

Bank Close Unit 3 At first, my dad was not in favor of me marrying Will because Will is black. I gues s my dad was a bit of a racist. Unfortunately, no arguments could counter dad's beliefs . Despite his protests , though, Will and I decided to go through with our wedding. On a marvelous June day we were married in the park. The wedding went off without any host ile words or embarrassing exchanges. It was actually quite beautiful. There was just on e problem. Many of our friends and relatives didn't attend our wedding. I had to conclu de that my dad was not the only prejudiced person we knew. Other than my father, no one had come out to speak against my relationship with Will. It did not seem appropriate f or them to show their resistance to our marriage in this way. My dad had strong reserva tions about my marriage to Will, but at least he was there. Will and I decided to overc ome this burden by showing everyone how wrong they were. We wanted not only to love one another, but also to defy racial hatred by loving one another. We probably weren't bei ng all that realistic, but we did succeed with one person. My dad and Will have develop ed an amazing friendship. My dad says he has forgotten why he ever had any doubts about our marriag Unit 4 What do we know about love? Is it, as some people would suggest, a mysterious force? Or can it be explained and possibly even created? Well, even in this scientific and reason-driven age, love seems still to defy total understanding. We can, however, know something about love and make stronger connections between individuals. One thing that seems to affect love is distance. The common idea is that the love between people grows as they are separated. Sometimes it is true that longing for someone who has gone overseas becomes more intense. Something that nourishes love is danger. Send both lovers to dangerous places and they will end up loving each other more. This could be caused by the worry it develops. It could also be that feelings of uncertainty or need transform into love with time. Love gives us warmth, courage, and a feeling of being safe, but it also demands selfless devotion and sacrifice. If you are truly committed to finding true love, you should make yourself more interesting. Do things that you enjoy and try to meet people who share identical interests. Unit 5 My son has started to hang out with the wrong type of boys. He is fifteen years old and until recently I had always been grateful for how easy he has been to raise. Lately, though, he has ceased to listen to what I say. He used to be such a sweet boy, but being in high school seems to have hardened him against authority figures. The change in his attitude has been very noticeable even to his teachers. The other day I asked him to come straight home after school, but instead he rebelled and stayed out until ten o'clock. Later I found out that he had skipped school completely that day. I found out that he was with a(n) bunch of boys who often cause trouble. I decided to forbid him to do anything with those boys, but he didn't listen to me. In spite of my objections to him being with those boys, he was with them the very next day.A friend of mine has a son who is having identical problems. She decided

III. 1. rewarding 2. communicate 3. access 4. embarrassing 5. positive 6. commitment 7. virtual 8. benefits 9. minimum 10. opportunities IV. 1. up 2. into 3. from 4. with 5. to 6. up 7. of 8. in 9. for 10.with V. 1.G 2.B 3.E 4.I 5.H 6.K 7.M 8.O 9.F 10.C Sentence Structure VI. 1.
