A group of frogs was traveling through the woods and two of them fell into a deep pit (hole). Immediately, all the other frogs in the group gathered around the pit. The frogs on top could see how deep the pit was. And it looked as if there was no way out. They watched as the two imprisoned(被囚禁的) frogs tried to jump out of the pit, so they started shouting at the two frogs in the pit to give up. “The pit is too deep. Y ou’re as good as dead,” they said. But the two frogs didn’t cared abut their words and tried to jump out. When the imprisoned frogs kept trying, the crowd shouted louder, “Give up. You’re as good as dead.”After a while, one of the tired frogs heard what the others were saying, and fell down and died.
But amazingly, the second frog kept jumping as hard as she could no matter how the other frogs kept shouting at her to accept the fact. Finally, with a hard jump. she made it out of the pit!
This amazing result happened because the second frog was deaf and unable to hear others’ words. She thought they had been cheering her when they were shouting! The mistake encouraged her to try harder and succeed at last. And that made all the difference!
Words have the power of life and death. An encouraging word spoken to someone who is down can lift them up and help them make it through their difficulties. A destructive (破坏性的) word to someone who is down can be fatal (致命的). So always be careful of what you say.
With a positive attitude, and being deaf to others’opinions, the second frog made use of such negativity(消极面) to overcome difficulties and reach her goals by using it as encouragement, instead of being influenced by others like the first frog, who failed to develop herself. So, if we are not deaf like this frog, who could not be influenced by others because of its physical condition, we need the wisdom (智慧) to guide us to the suitable way, but so as not to be blindly guided by worldly( 世俗的)opinion.
