A

According to a new survey, more than half of the parents in the United States are helping, or have helped or supported their adult children who have been hit by high unemployment and poor wages. It showed that present economic conditions are discouraging young adults from leaving home and forcing those who have already gone, so called boomerang kids, to return.

“Parents are continuing their financial involvement longer than we expected,”said Ted Beck, president of National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE).

About 60 percent of parents questioned in the survey said they are helping their adult children who are no longer in school financially. Half are providing housing and nearly half are helping with living expenses.

For an increasing number of adult children, the situation is bad. Two-thirds of adult children, aged 18 to 39, who are not in school said they faced tougher financial pressure than previous generations, according to the survey. And nearly one-third of the parents agreed that it was easier for them to find their financial feet than for their children.

Parents are helping their children out of genuine(真诚的) concern because they don't want to see them struggle. But Beck said that parents who make sacrifices to help their adult children should be careful about their own finances.

“If you are taking on extra debt or delaying retirement to help your adult children, you could be making a mistake and putting your own financial future in danger,” Beck warned.

Boomerang children can also cause other problems for their parents. Thirty percent of parents said they have given up privacy since their adult children moved back home, while more than a quarter have taken on added debt, and seven percent have delayed retirement. But the survey also showed that 42 percent of adult children living at home are helping with the cooking and cleaning.

()56. According to the passage, boomerang kids here refer to ________.

A. married adult children

B. grown-ups living with parents

C. adult children independent and successful in life

D. adult children depending on parents for financial support

()57. Which of the following matches the result of the survey?

A. About 30% of parents offer their adult children housing.

B. One-third of adult children earn money more easily than their parents.

C. Two-thirds of adult children are faced with financial problems in school.

D. About 50% of parents give money to their adult children to cover the daily cost.

()58. What is Ted Beck's suggestion to the parents?

A. Asking their children to help with the housework.

B. Being cautious in helping their children.

C. Leaving their children to struggle to live.

D. Putting off their time of retirement.

()59. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Adult children are less independent

B. Parents help support adult children

C. Bad conditions affect children a lot

D. Spoiled generation in the United States

B

It is almost like a reflex(条件反射) whenever we have a runny nose or a cough we reach for the antibiotics(抗生素). But maybe you should think twice before you start taking those pills next time you have a bit of a cold. Many doctors warn that we are overusing and sometimes misusing antibiotics to treat common diseases. This could have bad results.

Across the world, the problem of antibiotic resistance is growing, and the situation is especially bad in China. The average amount of antibiotics each Chinese person takes every year is almost three times the international level and ten times the level in the United States, Xiao Yonghong, a professor in Peking University, told the Guangming Daily on October 19.

It is a common wrong idea that antibiotics work for all diseases right down to everyday coughs and colds. In fact, antibiotics only work against bacteria, and not viruses. Most forms of the common cold and flu are caused by viruses, so antibiotics are useless against them.

The process of curing a disease is like a war. Antibiotics kill many kinds of bacteria which make you sick, but sometimes they also get “confused” and kill antibodies(抗体) in your body that should be helping to kill viruses.

Sometimes the enemy bacteria may change themselves in order to fight back. When antibiotics are used wrongly or too often, the bacteria can develop faster. This worsens the infection and makes it harder to treat. Because of resistance to antibiotics, once treatable diseases are becoming fatal(致命的) again.

In recent years, different kinds of “superbugs” have been showing themselves in many parts of the world. They can avoid any antibiotics we have and have caused many deaths.

Since penicillin(青霉素) was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1929, it has saved many lives worldwide. Before this discovery was made, even infections in small cuts could kill. However, overuse or misuse of this “life-saving” medicine could mean antibiotics turn against us in the war against disease.

()60. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?

A. To inform readers that antibiotics are useful in treating diseases.

B. To warn readers of the dangers of antibiotics used improperly.

C. To explain the serious situation of antibiotics misuse in China.

D. To report on the invention of new antibiotics in the world.

()61. In the war of curing a disease ________.

A. antibiotics defeat antibodies

B. antibiotics kill bacteria

C. antibodies help viruses

D. bacteria change themselves

()62. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. Antibiotics work against all kinds of everyday coughs and colds.

B. Large amounts of antibiotics are needed to kill “superbugs”.

C. Penicillin is considered to be the best ever antibiotic in history.

D. Bacteria may become resistant to antibiotics and develop faster.

()63. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Antibiotics are the best to kill colds.

B. Antibiotics never fight against antibodies.

C. Misuse of antibiotics could lead to death.

D. The use of antibiotics should be forbidden.

C

D

The geologic(地质的) time scale is the time scale used by scientists to describe the time and relationship between events that happened during the history of Earth. Because earth is over 4,570 million years old, the time scale that humans use to mark their own time—days, years, and centuries—is in too small of increments to be of use when measuring Earth time.

The geologic time scale is broken down into units according to particular events that occurred in various periods. Generally, the periods of time on the geologic time scale are described by major geological events, such as the disappearance of the dinosaurs or the rise of man.

The time scale is also divided into three main time components: eons, eras, and periods. An eon is the largest unit of time. Eons are then divided in eras, which in turn are divided into different periods which are generally classified as upper, middle, and lower. The terms late and early may also be used for the terms upper or lower. For instance, suppose an archaeologist(考古学家) and a geologist found a dinosaur fossil(化石) in a particular kind of rock. The archaeologist would research the make-up of the dinosaur bone in the lab and then use the geologic time scale to classify the eon, era, and period from which the bone evolved. He might say to the geologist, “This dinosaur bone is a fossil from the Early Jurassic Period of the Mesozoic Era, which falls under the

Phanerozoic Eon.” The geologist might find that the rock was “Upper Jurassic Sandstone” of the same period, era, and eon as the bone.

The geologic time scale was first thought up in the late 17th century by Danish geologist Nicholas Steno, who concluded that rock layers found on Earth were laid down over certain periods of time, and by studying the formation and composition of rock, a time scale could be created of Earth. Steno also pointed out that any given layer of rock is probably older than the one above it and younger than the one below it.

Many scientists after Steno provided valuable research and input into the creation of the geologic time scale. British geologists controlled the process, and their influence can be evidenced in the naming of some of the periods. Cambrian and Siluria were British tribes, while the term Devonian originates in the English country Devonshire.

In conclusion, scientists from all over the world created the geologic time scale based upon the relationship between the different rock layers and fossils. This time scale has allowed scientists to make precise theory about the history of our Earth.

()68. The word “increments” underlined in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to “________”.

A. increase

B. tools

C. advance

D. intervals

()69. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true about Nicholas Steno?

A. He was the first to form an idea of the geologic time scale.

B. He was an important British geologist living during the Cambrian Period.

C. He fully controlled the process of the further research of the geologic time scale.

D. He found a dinosaur bone in a kind of rock and then made a research in the lab.

()70. From the passage, we can draw the following conclusions EXCEPT ________.

A. the geologic time scale allows scientists to place historic events within relevant time frames

B. British geologists had a great influence, so many time periods are named after British tribes and counties

C. Nicholas Steno's key understanding was that layers of rock form over long periods and that each layer is probably older than the one below it

D. according to Nicholas Steno's conclusion, other scientists well developed the geologic time scale, which is beneficial for our accurate imagination of the earth's history

Weibo, or micro-blogs, the Chinese version of Twitter, has become a way of life in China, especially for the young.

Our train bumped into something. Our carriage has fallen onto its side. Children are screaming. Come to help us please! Come fast!

This is the first message sent from a high-speed train that crashed on July 23rd, 2018 in China's Zhejiang province.

Not only was it a cry for help, which saved tens oflives, but it also contributed to a wave of unprecedented(史无前例的) “citizen journalism” on China's micro-blogs. Within tenhours, the message was reposted over one-hundred-thousand times, which was something the girl, Xiao Yang, who wrote it had never imagined. She said,“I just wanted to survive at that moment, so I posted a message on Weibo. I didn't know it would help us to be rescued so quickly.”

After the crash, China's twenty million strong micro-bloggers demonstrated tremendous(巨大的) and unfamiliar power. They joined rescue efforts, helped survivors and monitored the officials investigating the accident.

As with traditional media, Weibo functions as a mirror on society, sparking debates and enlightening discussions. But what's different about the micro-blogging site is that anyone—not just journalists—can take a photo, record a video clip or write a quick note about what is happening around them.

I can fully accept this new Weibo lifestyle. Almost everyone has Weibo now. I read news

on Weibo and it helps me with my life. I also write or repost news sometimes.

Clearly, Weibo enables millions of Chinese to become“citizen journalists”,opening them up to fresh news and views on their community, country and world.

This has led to many micro-bloggers keeping a closer eye on the authorities. In response, the government is also using Weibo as a tool to respond to citizens' queries(质询).

And in Beijing, micro-bloggers have already left thousands of messages, urging the government to solve problems they consider urgent.

Wang Hui, general director of Beijing Information Office, said,“Weibo has created a platform for government officials to better understand what the citizens are thinking about and what they really need. This bottom-to-top information transmission channel is innovative and will become a new trend for government officials to provide better services for the people.”

But, however compelling(引人注目的) Weibo may be, much information it provides turns out to be rumors. Weibo, as a platform, not only helps the Chinese people express their views, but also trains the government in facing public opinion.

Meanwhile, for Xiao Yang, a simple message saved her life. And for millions of others, Weibo means much more than just a simple touch on a smart phone.

As the picture shows, the boys know their own, their friends' and even their idols' birthdays very well. Yet when asked about their parents' birthdays, neither of them can give a correct answer. Sure enough, this picture just gives us an extreme example. But what the picture tries to tell us is that we shouldn't ignore our parents' love. They sacrifice so much bringing us up! They work hard to provide us with all that we need, but seldom do we ever think of how we can repay them for their love.

What this picture reminds me of is that when we receive our parents' love, we shouldn't just take it for granted. Instead, we should try our best to think what we can do in return. We should work hard at our lessons, in the first place, to live up to their expectations, which I believe will make them happy.

A.①②③④ B.②④③① C.③④①② D.④①②③ 5.

Numerous people like Matti suffer from social phobia.

Social phobia, which refers to keeping a safe distance from total strangers or -being. Specifically, it acquaintances, has more or less affected individuals’ mental well either keeps individuals from voicing their justified requirements or exchanging interesting anecdotes with neighbors.
