Let’s face i t —you’re going to get a lot of well-intentioned advice from friends, parents and grandparents about your sleep. Some of this advice is going to be just wrong.

Myth 1: Sleeping late on the weekends will make up for lost sleep during the

week.

Fact: Getting less than the amount of sleep that you need night after night accumulates over time and starts to create a“sleep debt”. And like all debts, eventually you need to pay the price. The problem with waiting until the weekend to meet sleep needs is that in the meantime, you are paying the price of being less alert, feeling more moody, thinking slower and having less stimulation.

Myth 2: A boring teacher (or warm room, full stomach, etc.) can put teens to sleep.

Fact: If you are getting enough sleep on a regular basis, there is no teacher, math book or reading assignment in the world boring enough to make you fall asleep in class. There are basically two things that make people sleepy —not getting enough sleep and not getting good quality sleep. The environment kids are in, including the room temperature, light level and entertainment value, may unmask underlying sleepiness, but the environment does not cause it! So if you are dozing off in class, don’t blame it on bad teaching.

Myth 3: Teenagers can pull an all-nighter to study and still be ready for the big test in the morning.

Fact: Teenagers are much better off studying less and getting a good night’s sleep. Research clearly shows that the ability to concentrate and learn new information, as well as to work efficiently, declines sharply after being awake for 15-16 hours, and continues to bottom out the longer you stay up. Plus, if the big test is at 8:00 am, the problem gets even worse. That’s because morning time typically represents a low energy point in th e body’s normal 24-hour circadian(生理节奏的) rhythm, especially in teenagers.

60. According to the passage, a student who is in a sleep debt _______.

A. will become bad-tempered and upset

B. must make up for the lost sleep on the weekends

C. will become more interested in fancying

D. thinks slower but more carefully

A. Students who eat a lot are sleepy at class.

B. The warm room can make students fall asleep easily.

C. Students’ sleepiness has nothing to do with teaching.

D. The light level may lead students to feel sleepy.

62. If you wake up at six in the morning, when will you begin working ineffectively?

A. At about noon.

B. In the early morning.

C. At about 9 pm.

D. In the midnight.

63. According to the passage, at 8:00 am a teenager will _______.

A. feel more energetic after a night’s sleep

B. have a poor learning result

C. have the least desire to learn

D. be able to think in a quick way

Parking rage might be called a symptom of overgrowth in urban areas or places where the number of cars is over the number of parking spaces. Biggest complaints of parking rage seem to come from the UK, and also cities like San Francisco.

Parking rage is the uncontrolled anger felt by drivers who are trying to park, or who have been ticketed for parking illegally. This can lead to illegal acts, like angry behavior and gestures toward city employees like meter readers. In addition, some people speak to other drivers who have parked impolitely, leave unfriendly notes on their car windows, or even damage cars by cutting or painting them. In the worst case, parking rage can lead to violent physical fights between two drivers, or one attacking another with his or her car.

Since parking rage has been studied, a few things have become quite clear. People tend to be slower leaving a parking space when someone is waiting for the space. Even if the person hurries, they are slower than when no one is waiting. If an angry driver in a waiting car honks(鸣笛) or shouts, time to leave a parking space further increases.

Parking rage is clearly more common in areas of heavy traffic, where the number of spaces is less. It most commonly occurs during rush hour. To avoid being the victim of another’s rage, you might want to make sure you have exact time to find parking. Another way tried in some cities is to get to work without using cars. Building larger parking garages can also help. Ridesharing, to reduce the number of cars on the road and increase the ability of spaces may help too.

If you are in a situation where you happ en to anger someone, it’s a good idea to keep a cell phone handy to contact the police. Further, do your best to park legally, and with care, so as not to enrage other drivers.

68.This passage mainly tells readers _______.

A. we should have good manners when we park

B. what the parking rage is

C. how to control our bad temper

D. the harm from parking rage

69. We can infer from the passage that in San Francisco _______.

A. there are more cars there than in other places

B. the number of cars is over the number of parking spaces

C. parking spaces are enough and available

D. meter readers are stricter than in other places

70. Which of the following is the worst case when parking rage occurs?

A. Making angry gestures toward meter readers.

B. Saying impolite words to other drivers.

C. One driver attacks another with his or her car.

D. Damaging cars by cutting or painting them.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

How to Offer Support and Encouragement

Whether a friend, family member, or coworker, at some time or another, somebody will need support and encouragement. This could be the result of a disappointing change in life, a health change or other similar challenges. 71 Even if you do not think that you have the ability to offer the proper support and encouragement, your willingness to be there and to listen may be enough.

Each situation is different, and each would require different levels of both support and encouragement. 72 Helping keep up someone’s spirits when they are feeling helpless just by letting them know you are there, can make a serious difference in their lives.

73 For people in this situation, often a telephone call, or dropping in to say “hello” is more than enough. You may not feel that yo u are doing much of anything, but to the person who is feeling isolated the effort you take to stop and see them, or call them can make a big difference. For someone who has recently lost a job, you may be able to offer support by helping them network effectively. Or, you may be able to help them craft a new resume, apply for benefits, or a number of other “small” things that may seem insignificant to you, but to them can be

a very significant event.

74 However, if you let them know that you are there for them, and make it

a point to check in with them regularly, they may soon feel more comfortable and share them with you. Take for example a person who is suffering with depression.

75 They may not be willing to admit that there is something wrong. However, if you trust your instincts(直觉) and take a little extra care to support and encourage them even in little ways, you can make a huge difference in their overall outlook.

A. All too often, people feel isolated and do not know where to turn.

B. You know that there is something wrong.

C. So you may need support and encouragement to pull through.

D. In such cases, it is natural for you to reach out and offer your support and

encouragement.

E. You may not always understand all of the issues going on in so meone’s life.

F. You know better than anyone the best ways to support and encourage someone

who is going through a difficult time.

G. The support you offer could be as simple as helping with simple household tasks,

running errands(跑腿儿), or even being available for telephone calls.
