Jeremy Fox, a retired businessman in a small city in England, recently bought an old farmhouse with a yard and a small field, some five miles out of the town. There he planned to lead a simple life with his wife, Amelia.

It was while clearing out the old barn on the far side of the yard that he made an interesting discovery. In a corner, under some old sacks, he found some large fragments (碎片) of an antique (古董) bowl. Out of curiosity, he took them into the kitchen and, much to the anger of his wife, washed the mud off them. That evening he spread newspapers over the kitchen table and carefully stuck the fragments together. However, two pieces were found missing.

Two days later, having pulled down the barn, Mr. Fox was digging over the ground in preparation for the installation (安装) of a greenhouse, when he discovered the two missing pieces. When he had stuck them in position, the bowl looked so fine that Amelia agreed to its being placed on a table in the living room, in front of the window.

“We might have something a bit special here,” he said to his wife. A few days later, Jeremy took several photographs of the bowl, which he sent off to So theby’s in London.

Unexpectedly, Sotheby’s was extremely interested in the bowl and sent an expert to inspect it. It turned out that it was a Chinese Ming fish bowl, dating back to around 1500, and might be expected to get a five-figure sum at an auction(拍卖).

A week later still more unexpectedly, two police officers called and told the Foxes the bowl was stolen property(财产).

So the bowl never reached the auction room, and Mr. Fox never received the five-figure sum that had been mentioned. However, he framed one of the photographs he had taken and hung it on the wall.

With people wearing face masks to protect themselves from being infected ( 感染) with the novel coronavirus (新型冠状病毒), a concern now is how they are dealing with their used masks. As used face masks may carry the coronavirus, they shouldn't be carelessly thrown away as waste. Since the virus can survive for one or two days in wet conditions, the used masks may become a new source of infection.

Given that the garbage sorting(垃圾分类) has recently been carried out in only a few cities, mixed waste commonly exists. The mixture of polluted masks and recyclable waste may cause a possible danger to rubbish collectors when they put hands in the garbage cans to collect recyclable items. What's worse, if someone just throws a used mask on the street, someone might pick it up, or try to collect it to sell second-hand.

With the spread of the novel coronavirus, there has obviously been a high demand for protective equipment such as face masks among ordinary people, with the resulting generation of a huge quantity of what may be considered medical waste. Thus, the problem is how to deal with this mass of medical waste, particularly the used face masks outside of hospitals. Communities should have special trash cans around to collect used masks. If these are not provided, people should put the waste into plastic bags before casting them aside, so they are not exposed to the air.

As the main risk of medical waste is infectivity, disinfection (消毒) , whether by steam, chemicals or microwave, is very important. According to regulations, only licensed(得到许可的) companies should collect, transport and do the final management of medical waste.

For example, medical waste must be collected in special containers, and be transported in special vehicles by qualified people.

28. What problem is described in paragraph 1?

A. Used masks may cause infection.

B. Used masks are difficult to recycle.

C. The virus spreads quickly in wet conditions.

D. The novel coronavirus infection is worsening.

29. What is paragraph 2 mainly talking about?

A. The causes of sorting garbage.

B. The ways of recycling used masks.

C. The harm of using second-hand masks.

D. The risk of handling used masks improperly.

30. What do the underlined words "casting them aside" in paragraph 3 probably mean?

A. Destroying rubbish.

B. Throwing waste.

C. Marking rubbish.

D. Reusing waste.

31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. It costs a lot to collect and transport medical waste.

B. The hospital infection is mainly from medical waste.

C. The rules of dealing with medical waste are very strict.

D. License companies should be responsible for infection.

D

Friendship is an important part of human life. Friends can share our joys and sadnesses. We aren't alone. Many different animals also make friends.

Recently, a British research team finished an eight-year study of Indo-Pacific dolphins off the coast of Western Australia. These dolphins can use different tools to search for food. The researchers found that these dolphins are more willing to hang out with partners that like the same tool. Other factors, like family closeness or sex, have no impact on this relationship. It suggests that dolphins form social bonds based on shared interests.

Apart from dolphins, elephants and horses are also known to form friendships. Are friendships only limited to the same species?

Of course not, The Atlantic reported. In 2015,Timur, a goat, was left in the enclosure (围场) of a tiger, Amur, as a meal. But instead of eating Timur, Amur liked to play with him and got angry when others were close to his friend. That's because in captivity(圈养), animals don't need to spend much time and energy marking their land or looking for

mates the way they would in the wild. They are actually more likely to feel bored.

More interestingly, animals not only make friends but also try to keep lasting friendships. Take bats for example. In 2011, scientists found bats often hang out with a

few particular friends, keeping loose ties to the rest of their group. Humans are different.

"We do not work, play and live together with the same friends all the time," Swiss zoologist

Gerald Kerth explained. "But nevertheless, we are able to maintain long-term despite our

often highly dynamic(充满活力的)social lives."

32. What do dolphins pay more attention to when making friends?

A. The same interests.

B. Family closeness.

C. Hunting behavior.

D. The special sounds.

33. How can we understand Amur's action?

A. Amur wants to show Timur his land.

B. Amur longs for animals to play with him.

C. Amur has more friends than other tigers.

D. Amur pretends to be friendly to eat Timur.

34. In terms of friendship, what is the difference between humans and bats?

A. Bats usually play with certain friends.

B. Humans keep their friendship longer.

C. Bats like to live together with friends.

D. Humans make friends in social activities.

35. How is the text mainly developed?

A. By listing data.

B. By taking examples.

C. By asking questions.

D. By giving advice.

Get some exercise. Physical activity is good for your body, and your brain needs it too! 39 If you keep yourself active through light exercise, you will be ready to learn faster.

Take a lot of notes. Only few people are able to remember information as they read it. If you're not one of those people, you completely need to start taking notes. 40 That will help you remember all the other things you've learned.

写作(满分15分)

One possible version:

Film or book, which do you prefer?

Some of us think that it is better to see the film than to read the book in the original. The reason is that it takes less time to understand the whole story. Besides, the film is usually more interesting, and it is easier to follow.

Some others have just the opposite opinion. They think that they can get more detailed information from the original. Meanwhile, the language in the book is possibly more lively and beautiful.

Personally, I agree with the second view. Actually I have more reasons for it. I think I can stay at home, reading quietly in a situation of my own, and what's more, I am able to better understand the author's ideas. In a word, to read the original work is better than to see the film based on it.
