A serous problem for today’s society is who should be responsible for our elderly and

how to improve their lives. It is not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want for our society. I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem.

First, employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees. To make this possible, a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose. But when a company must take life-long responsibility for its employees, it may suffer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs.

Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual. This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. This does not seem a very fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor.

In addition, the government could take responsibility for the care of the elderly. This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions. Furthermore, some institution should be created for senior citizens, which can help provide a comfortable life for them. Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly viable answer. The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young.

One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent.

To sum up, all these options have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that some combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations.

According to the dictionary definition of “create”, ordinary people are creative every day. To create means “to bring into being, to cause to exist “---something each of us does daily.

We are creative whenever we look at or think about something in a new way. First this involves an awareness of our surroundings. It means using all of our sense to become aware of our world. This may be as simple as being aware of color and texture, as well as taste, when we plan a meal. Above all, it is the ability to notice things that others might miss.

A second part of creativity is an ability to see relationships among things. If we believe the expression, “There is nothing new under the sun,” the creativity is remaking or recombining the old in new ways. For example, we might do this by finding a more effective way to study or a better way to arrange our furniture, or we might make a new combination of camera lenses and filters to create an unusual photograph.

A third part of creativity is the courage and drive to make use of our new ideas, to apply them to achieve some new results. To think up a new concept is one thing; to put the idea to work is another.

These three parts of creativity are involved in all the great works of genius (天才), but they are also involved in many of our day-to-day activities.

61. Which of the following activities in NOT a creative one according to the passage?

A. a new thing is only a tale

B. we can seldom create new things

C. we can scarcely(几乎不)see really new things in the world

D. a new thing can only be created at the basis of original things

64. What does the author think about the relationship between a new thought and its being put into practice?

A. To find anew thought will definitely lead to the production of new thing.

B. A man with an excellent ability of practice can easily become an inventor.

C. One may come up with a new thought, but may not put it into practice.

D. It’s more difficult to create a new thought than to apply it in practice.

People do not analyze every problem they meet. Sometimes they try to remember a

solution from the last time they had a similar problem. They often accept the opinions or ideas of other people. Other times they begin to act without thinking. They try to find a solution by trial and error. However, when all these methods fail, the person with a problem has to start analyzing. There are six stages in analyzing a problem.

First the person must recognize that there is a problem. For example, Sam’s bicycle is broken, and he cannot read it to class as he usually does. Sam must see that there is a problem with his bicycle.

Next the thinker must define the problem. Before Sam can repair his bicycle, he must find out the reason why it does not work. For instance, he must determine if the problem is with the gears, the brakes, or the frame. He must make his problem more specific.

Now the person must look for information that will make the problem clearer and lead to possible solutions. For instance, suppose Sam decided that his bike does not work because there is something wrong with the gear wheels. At this time, he can look in his bicycle repair book and read about gears. He can talk to his friends at the bike shop. He can look at his gears carefully.

After studying the problem, the person should have several suggestions for a possible solution. Take Sam as an illustration. His suggestions might be: put oil on the gear wheels; buy new gear wheels and replace the old ones; tighten or loosen the gear wheels.

Eventually one suggestion seems to be the solution to the problem. Sometimes the final idea comes very suddenly because the thinker suddenly sees something new or sees something in a new way. Sam, for example, suddenly sees that there is a piece of chewing gum between the gear wheels. He immediately realizes the solution to his problem: he must clean the gear wheels.

Finally the solution is tested. Sam cleans the gear wheels and finds that afterwards his bicycle works perfectly. In short , he has solved the problem.

Christmas in Australia is often very hot. Whereas the northern hemisphere is in the middle of winter, Australians are baking in summer heat. It is not unusual to have Christmas Day well into the mid 30 degrees Celsius, or near 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

A traditional meal includes a turkey dinner, with ham, and pork. A flaming Christmas plum pudding is added for dessert. 英语试题2010.11

第Ⅱ卷(非选择题共 45 分)

第一节:阅读表达(15分)

Learning to save money when you're young is an important lesson. All good lessons and habits begin early, and saving is a skill that everyone needs. Many people—adults included—do not have a good sense of saving for the long run.

I have been lucky to learn this lesson early because I have had a grass-cutting business since I was 10 years old. Of the money I make I spend about 10 percent and save the other 90.

Make sure you save and don't spend too much, which is a good way to build up wealth.

I have put my earnings in a bank. Many teens I know spend all the money they earn so it never has a chance to grow. Young people should realize that their teenage years are a great time to begin saving.

At high school many parents pay for almost everything, so your expenses can be small. If you have a lot, you should have fun with some of the money. But you should also save some so that it will grow. Then you can begin planning for your future. When you spend money, you not only lose that money, but also lose the interest you could have earned by saving it.

After high school, college is expensive and then "real" life begins, with expenses such as food and rent. If you can hold on to a good percentage of the money you earn as a teen, going to college and buying a house will be much easier. ________________, the more time the money has to grow. If you are in your thirties without any savings, you will always have to struggle. The earlier you begin saving, the easier it is to create a nest egg.

Later in life it can be hard to start saving because general costs of living are more expensive and you may only have enough to pay your bills. If you want to buy a house and have a family, you need money to start with, which comes from saving.

Many say money cannot make you happy, and this is true. But money can help you to lead a secure life.

Saving early will mean you will have to work for fewer years when you are older. It will also allow you to spend time doing the things that you want to do.

In addition to this, it will mean you can live the way you want to without worrying.

根据要求回答下列问题:

76. What’s the best title of the passage?

77. Which sentence in the passage is the closest in meaning to the following one?

As long as you save early, you’ll do less work to live well at your old age.

78. Please fill in the blank in the passage with proper words or phrases to complete the sentence.(within 10 words)

期中英语考试卷及答案

英语期中考试试卷 Part I Reading Comprehension (10×4 = 40) Passage One Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and her the politicians before tan election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen. 1. In the past, many young people ______. A) knew the effects of war B) went in for politics C) liked to save the wounded in wars D) were willing to be soldiers 2. Now with TV people can ________. A) discuss politics at an information center B) show more interest in politics C) make their own decisions on political affairs D) express their opinions freely 3. The author thinks that TV advertisements ______. A) are not reliable on the whole B) are useless to people C) are a good guide to adults D) are very harmful to the young 4. Which is NOT true according to the passage? A) People have become used to crimes now. B) With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly. C) People now like to read books with pictures. D) The adults are less violent than the young. 5. From the passage, we can conclude that _______. A) children should keep away from TV B) TV programs should be improved C) children's books should have pictures D) TV has a deep influence on the young Passage Two Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people but I also explain that there's a big difference between "being a writer" and " writing". In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hour alone at a typewriter. "You've got to want to write," I say to them, "not want to be a writer". The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer killed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in
