For many years Henry had been a journalist. He had worked on many international newspapers and magazines and traveled all over the world.

Henry had witnessed wars and natural disasters such as floods. Earthquakes and erupting volcanoes(火山爆发).

He had seen every kind of terrible crime and strange event there was.

In the 1920s, scientists found a collection of bones near Beijing, China. They believed that the bones were human and that they were about 500,000 years old. They also believed the bones were important because they were from a little-known stage in the evolution(演变) of human beings.

The bones were kept in Beijing until 1941. Then because the Japanese army was advancing towards the city, the scientists decided to send the bones to the US for safety.

Dr Harry L. Shapiro, former Professor of Anthropology(人类学) at Columbia University, has been searching for them ever since. He believes they were stolen by the American army officer whose job was to take them to the US. He could be right.

After the war, a Chicago businessman offered $5,000 to anybody with information about the bones. A woman phoned him and told him she knew where the bones were. He arranged to meet her on the 102nd floor of the Empire State Building in New York. They met and she told him that her husband had come home from China with fossils (化石) of a prehistoric (= of the time before recorded history) man. She showed him photograph of them. Then she walked away and was never heard from again.

All around the world, people drink tea. Tea, however, does not mean the same thing to everyone. In different countries people have very different ideas about drinking tea.

In China, for example, tea is often served when people get together. The Chinese drink it at any time of the day at homes or in teahouses. They prefer their tea plain, with nothing else in it.

Tea is also important in Japan. The Japanese have a special way of serving tea called a tea ceremony(礼节). It is very old and full of meaning. Everything must be done in a special way in the ceremony. There is even a special room for it in Japanese homes.

In the United States, people drink tea mostly for breakfast after meals. Americans usually use tea bags to make their tea. Tea bags are faster and easier than making tea in teapots. In the summer, many Americans drink cold tea sometimes called “iced tea”. Sometimes they drink iced tea from ca ns, like soda.

In order to know a foreign language thoroughly, four things are necessary. Firstly, we must be able to understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves, correctly, with confidence and without hesitation. Thirdly, we must be able to read the language and fourthly, we must be able to write it. There is no easy way to succeed in language learning. A good memory is of great help, but it is not enough simply to memorize rules from a grammar book. It is not much use learning by heart long lists of words and their meaning. We learn words not by ourselves, but in sentences. We must learn by using the language. “Learn through use” is a good piece of advice for those who are studying a new language. Practice is very important.
