Empathy(同情心)lets us feel another person’s pain and drivers us to help. Do any other animals feel empathy Scientists recently found that rats do, too.

Most people don’t like rats. In many people’s eyes, rats are only bad. But Jean Decety and his partners at the University of Chicago did an experiment. It showed that rats are kind, warm-hearted animals. They can feel each other’s pain.

Scientists placed pairs of rats in plastic cages for two weeks. During this time they got to know each other. Then they put one of the rats from each pair into a small container(容器)in the cages. The small container had a door. It was rigged to fall to the side when the free rat touched it. Many of the trapped rats squeaked(吱吱叫)to express their discomfort. The other rats of the pairs could see their suffering friends clearly.

In most pairs, the free rats would become very worried about their friends. They kept trying to save their friends again and again throughout the month. Scientists put the rats ’ favorite chocolate in the cages, but the rats didn ’t eat it until they had saved their friends successfully. Scientists also found that female rats tended to act more empathetic than male rats.

“The results are the first to show that rats take action in response to another ’s trouble,” Decety said. “Monkeys and chimpanzees (黑猩猩)have similar behavior. But unlike those animals, rats can be ready used in laboratory studies. They will help us to learn which parts of the brain lead to empathy and helping behavior and whether empathy is natural.”

1. A person with empathy is often _________. A. kind-hearted B. clever C. active D. strong

2. Why didn ’t the free rats eat the chocolate at first A. Because they were not hungry at that time. B. Because chocolate was not their favorite food. C. Because they wanted to save the trapped rats first. D. Because they were afraid that the chocolate was bad.

3. Which of the following animals were NOT mentioned in the article A. Monkeys. B. Chimpanzees. C. Rats. D. Cats.

4. What does the word “discomfort ” in Paragraph 3 mean A. happiness B. illness C. uneasiness D. anger

I bought a jasmine plant for my office. When I bought it, I was told it would bloom (开花) and the sweet smell would fill my office. I had the plant for two months, and ev ery day I looked at it, but there weren’t any flowers or pleasant smell. I was not happy, so I gave the plant to my friend Linda.

One day, another friend Mary called and invited me to her office. When I walked in, her jasmine flowers surprised

me. I reached out to touch the flowers. Mary cut some and gave them to me. I couldn’t

help smelling them. Surrounded by the sweet smell of only a handful of these flowers, I suddenly understood something.

Mary bought her plant the same time I did. It took a year for her

jasmine to bloom. I was so impatient for mine to bloom; regretfully, I gave it away.

In a way my life is like the jasmine plant. I need to be patient and let things happen.

Last Sunday Linda told me that she was going abroad the next week. Before she left, she returned the plant to me. This time I am going to wait. I have learned that when we want something in our life, we have to be patient. I am slowly learning to have that patience to wait for my jasmine to bloom.

6. Before she gave the jasmine away, the writer had it for ____________. A. one day B. one year C. two weeks D. two months

7. When the writer saw Mary’s jasmine, she felt____________ . A. unhappy B. peaceful C. hopeful D. surprised

8. What has the writer learned from her experience

A. Patience is needed in life.

B. Flowers can make life better.

C. Friendship is necessary for us.

D. Jasmine can be a wonderful plant.

C.

It was another rainy day, it had stopped raining but the ground was still wet, with this remarkable smell of freshness, I was in the car with my friend, and ahead of us was a pitiful-looking old man, with a walking stick in his hand as it seemed he was having a hard time standing up or barely doing any effort. I have always had a weakness for old people; they break my heart, especially the ones begging on the streets, or selling flowers, I feel sad for them, having to be on the streets instead of being taken care of by their families or the government. There was a car in front of us before we reach next to him. I had prepared money in my hand to give it to him, and I was looking at the car in front of us when the driver took a bill of money and threw it off the

window —he threw it in the face of the old man and it fell on the ground, in a wet spot. The old man looked at the bill with a sad look, knowing it would take him an enormous effort to pick it up and he was hardly standing up, so I opened the car door, ran to him as he was bending to pick it up, took it, wiped it with my jeans since it was almost wet, gave it to him and gave him the money I had prepared for him. The look on his face when he saw me doing that was the most

rewarding look anyone has ever given me. He was shocked, and started thanking me for what I did and asking God to bless me, but I couldn’t hear a word of what he was saying, I couldn’t look him in the eye, how can someone so sweet like him with a kind and gentle look be left on the streets Helping him out surely made his day, but what he didn’t know is that he

affected me in a way he could never imagine —I still think about him very often, and I just hope everyone will look at old people the way I do.

9. In the author’s opinion, who s hould be responsible for caring for old people A. Old people themselves. B. Some kind-hearted people. C. Their families or the government. D. Some non-governmental organizations.
