第一节(共20小题;每小题1.5分,共30分)

A

What makes us happy?

For 15-year-old Ellie Wilson from London, going through the turbulent (不安的) period between childho od and adulthood is “a pain”. However, she also enjoys happy times with friends, even though they have a lot of arguments.

“The thing about me and my friends is that one minute we’re up and then the next we’re down; one minute I want to shout the house down, the next I feel so happy that I just want to hug everyone in the room at once,” she said to British paper The Independent.

Wilson’s generation have all the latest fashions and electronic equipment. But owning them does not necessarily make them happier. New research shows that it is the simple things in life that please us most.

Close friends, playing sport and a stable (稳定的) home life are more important to a teenager’s happiness than the wealth of their parents, according to a study published this month by the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex in Britain.

Researcher Gundi Knies found families’ incomes didn’t necessarily play a part in happiness. But happy children tend to have their own bedroom, a bike or other leisure equipment.

Children who have friends over for tea once a fortnight (两周) and those who go swimming once a month were also happier with their lives than those who do not.ks5u

A sense of belonging clearly had an influence on how satisfied people were. Children with lots of friends reported higher levels of happiness than those without.

Children who live with both their parents were happier than those living in single families and step family relationships.

Diet plays an important role too. Children who have fewer than five portions (份) of fruit and vegetables a day or who eat fast food most days tend to be less happy.

The study also finds that girls make up both the happiest and least happy groups of children. “Older girls are unhappier because they are goin g through puberty (青春期) and their parents become more protective. Girls also become very conscious (在意的) of the way they look and the way they are treated,” Knies told UK newspaper The Observer. “In general boys don’t face the same pressures.”

41. What can we conclude from Paragraphs 1-2?

A. Most teenagers are unhappy.

C. When teenagers argue with friends they feel upset.

D. Most teenagers are confused by their emotions.

42. What are the most important factors in determining teenage happiness?

a. Having rich parents

b. Having a stable family

c. Owning fashionable gadgets

d. Belonging to a group of friends

A. a, b

B. a, c

C. b, c

D. b, d

43. Why are girls unhappier than boys during puberty?

A. Because they are more likely to be under pressure.

B. Because they receive more attention from their parents.

C. Because they have less sense of belonging at that time.

D. Because they experience bigger physical changes than boys.

44. What is the article mainly about?

A. New research on teenage health.

B. Tips for teenagers on how to get through puberty.

C. What influences teenage happiness.

D. Some common teenage problems.

Can dogs help with OCD?

You might watch and laugh when your dog chases its tail because it looks cute. But did you know that, even though it might appear like a fun game, it could mean your pet is sick?

Researchers have found that if a dog runs after its tail, chases cars and barks at flies that are not there, it may have obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD, 强迫症).

In fact, OCD is even more common among humans. The symptoms (症状) are varied: some people check and recheck the locks before they go out; others are extremely afraid of germs (细菌) and have to wash their hands many times a day.

English soccer star David Beckham, for example, cannot stand odd numbers (单数) of items in his fridge. So if he has three cans of drink he will throw one out, according to his wife Victoria. Hoping to better understand OCD in humans, a team of scientists from the University of Helsinki, Finland, studied 368 dogs, including those that chase their tail for several hours daily or a few times a month, according to https://www.360docs.net/doc/4e6905885.html,. They also examined dogs that had never chased their tails. Scientists took the dogs’ blood sample (血样) and asked their owners some questions about their pets’ daily life.

Findings showed that among all kinds of dogs, bull terriers (斗牛犬) and German shepherds (德国牧羊犬) were likely to chase their tails, which led scientists to believe that genes (基因) can cause OCD.

Diet also plays a part. It was found that dogs that eat food with certain vitamins and minerals chased their tails less. “Interest ingly, there are indications (迹象) that vitamins and minerals are helpful in human OCD treatment,” said researcher Katriina Tiira.

Moreover, tail-chasing is often found among dogs that were separated from their mothers too early or ones that didn’t receive enough care. They are also more likely to turn out to be shyer and more afraid of loud noises at a young age.

The study can help us understand the causes of OCD in humans. “Dogs share the same

environment with humans, and large animals are physiologically (生理上的) close to humans,” said Hannes Lohi, leader of the study.

45. The English soccer star David Beckham is mentioned in the article to ______.

No quick change

I would be the first to say that I am not materialistic. My friends regard me as a goody-goody (乖乖女). My parents say I am conservative (保守的) and modest when it comes to clothes. I don’t wear bikinis, and none of my skirts or shorts end above my knees. That is my choice.

So why, why did I decide to buy that skirt? My family and I were in Target, and there it was, waiting – a skirt specifically designed not to cover anything. It was light brown and looked like something one of those anime (日本动画) schoolgirls would wear.

I checked my purse. The skirt cost $10. I had the money. I could buy it. I imagined walking into school and my pals’ jaws (下巴) dropping. Guys would ask me out, and I would be happy. I could buy it – no, I should buy it.

I showed my mother. She was surprised but said it was my decision. My sister looked on jealously.

I went into the dressing room to try it on. I was so sure that this skirt would change me, somehow make me not what I am but what I wished to be. I slid my jeans off and put it on.

Now for the decisive moment. I looked in the mirror. There I was – a girl in a Superman T-shirt and sneakers who didn’t know how to make friends with others.

Of course, the skirt had not changed me. It fit me well; that wasn’t the p roblem. It might make me look good in the eyes of today’s world.

But it simply was not me. I am not a girl who wears cool clothes to fit in. My glasses fogged up as I started to cry.

I took the thing off and went back into the comfort and safety of modesty.

My mom knocked on the door. “Emily, are you okay?”

I wiped away my tears. “I’m fine.” I looked in the mirror again and saw a blond skinny girl with thick glasses and a ponytail (马尾辫). I saw myself.

Food for thought in the US

Before I left for America, everyone warned me to watch my weight because it’s easy to put on weight there. That’s true. One thing I still cannot adjust to is the food and drink.

Almost every American person loves sodas, especially those full of ice cubes. I remember the first day I came to my host family. When I asked them for a glass of hot water, they all looked at me and thought I was crazy!

At my school there’s no water dispenser (饮水机) but there’s one in each classroom in China. All the American students drink water from taps outside the restrooms that are specially designed for drinking. The water is cold and the school doesn’t have hot water.

The most popular food here is hamburgers and French chips, which are junk food in China. Most students who eat at school prefer those to salads. They also eat lots of pizzas and hot dogs. As a result, you can always see some really fat people in school.

Luckily, my host mom is really a great cook. She always makes food from different countries and eats a balanced meal every day. So I have a lot of fruit and vegetables. At my host family’s home, they usually eat biscuits.

These old-fashioned biscuits are low in fat and flavored (味道) with buttermilk, butter, and a bit of honey. Oh here comes the most interesting thing: the word “biscuit” in China actually means “cracker (薄脆饼干)” here. Real biscuits are a kind of soft cake.

I was also amazed by the rich kinds of food in American supermarkets and their reasonable prices. For example, one brand of yogurt has 20 kinds of flavors! You’re sure to find one that you like. And most of the food provides you “light”, “original” or “no sugar” options to choose from.

53.The underlined phrase “adjust to” is closest in m eaning to ______.

A. deal with

B. get used to

C. get rid of

D. choose from

54. What surprised the author about drinking water in the US?

A. People do not drink hot water.

B. People prefer to drink sodas.

C. People drink from any tap they find.

D. People drink from water dispensers.

55. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?

A. It’s easier to put on weight in the US than in other countries.

B. The author thinks many Americans do not eat healthily.

C. Salads and hot dogs are the most popular food in America.

D. Biscuits are exactly the same thing in the US and China.

56. What is the main idea of the article?

A. To show how badly Americans need to change their diet.

B. To tell about the American foods that she likes and dislikes.

C. To show how much fun she has with her host family.

D. To introduce food differences between America and China.

Four Chinese national treasures including

bronze heads of a swine(pig), a monkey,

an ox and a tiger will be on display in

Beijing this month.

Stolen from the Yuanmingyuan by British

and French soldiers in 1860, the heads have travelled the world for more than 100 years. But in September, the swine head was the last of the four treasures to return home, and they will go on show together for the first time. The four bronze heads were part of a set of 12 that represented each animal in the Chinese calendar. Based on European designs, they were made for the Qing emperor in 1760 and placed by a fountain(喷泉) at the palace, with a water clock in the center. Water would pour out of each head in turn every two hours.

The swine head was bought from a New York collector by Macao businessman Stanley Ho for US$900,000. He gave it to the state-owned Poly Art Museum so it could be displayed with its “brothers” the ox, monkey and tiger heads. These three were bought by the China Poly Group in 2000 for US$4.2 million.

Jiang Yingchun, director of the museum, said the price paid for the four heads matches their value. However, some experts say China should stop buying stolen cultural relics and simply ask for them to be returned.

Apart from the four heads that have returned home, the mouse and rabbit heads are in French Museum, while the horse head is in Taiwan. But the whereabouts(下落) of the remaining five heads is still unknown.

57.Among the four bronze heads to be on show, the bronze swine________.

A.cost more than the other three B.is the biggest

C.is to be on show at last D.was given by a Macao businessman 58.The 12 bronze heads of animals________.

59.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.We have known where all the 12 bronze heads are.

B.The 12 bronze heads were first made for people to store water.

C.Some experts don't think we should pay to get back the cultural relics.

D.The Chinese government bought back the bronze ox, monkey and tiger heads from a New Yorker.

60. This passage was probably first seen in ________

A. a story book

B. a travel journal

C. newspaper

D. advertisement

第二节信息匹配(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Greeting someone, saying goodbye – these situations fill me with unease. You have a second to make a dangerous decision. One peck (轻吻)? Two pecks? Three? No kisses at all? Why, I think, as I knock into the other person’s face, why can it not be as simple as a handshake?

A survey by the soap company Radox in May showed one in five Brits now feels a handshake is “too formal”, according to the Daily Mail. __61__ For one third of people the choice was a hug, for 16 percent a kiss on the cheek.

British people are known to be reserved (保守的) unfriendly, some would say. __62__ But the super-British handshake is no longer fashionable. We want to be more like our easygoing Mediterranean (地中海的) neighbors who greet each other with kisses and hugs.

The trouble is, we still find it a bit awkward. What does a married man do when greeting a married female friend, for example? __63__

Guys don’t tend to kiss one another; my male friends in Britain go for the “manly hug”, taking each other stiffly (不自然地) in one arm and giving a few thumps (用力拍) on the back with words like “Take it easy, yeah?”.

__64__ Unlike the French, who comfortably deliver three, our cheek-pecks usually end in embarrassed smile: “Oh, gosh, sorry, I didn’t mean to kiss you on the lips, I never know where to aim for first!”

__65__ Even the ha ndshake had its problems: don’t shake too hard, but don’t hold the other person’s hand too weak either, and definitely don’t go in with sweaty hands.

Maybe it’s better to leave it at a smile and a nod.

A. How should someone younger greet someone older?

B. Is it polite to kiss a foreigner when you meet for the first time?

C. Some 42 percent said they never shook hands when greeting friends.

D. Handshakes used to work for us because we didn’t have to get too close.

E. But then it’s never been easy for us poor, uncomfortable Brits.

F. Handshakes are still considered the most popular way of greeting in Britain.

G. The biggest questions, if you do decide to kiss, are how many times and which cheek first.

Dear Jane,

Thank you for your letter and the photo of your family. Now I am writing to tell you why I am the only child in my family.

As you know, the population of China is growing very fast. In order to control the rapid increase of population, in the 1980s the government of China began to put into practice the family programme---- one child for each couple. As a result, most families have only one child. The child in the family can get more love from the family and chances to get better education. On the other hand, the only child is selfish, and not so independent. Sometimes they feel lonely. I think, every the only child like me should learn to make more friends.

Hope that we write more often.

Best wishes!

They want to know about ocean water and the plant and animal life deep in the ocean. In 1934 the scientist William Beebe dived 3000 feet below the surface in a hollow steel ball. In 1935 August Piccard dived 10330 feet In I960 his son Jean dived to a depth of 35800 feet. All these early dives were deep. But the divers could not stay down for very long. They had to come back up to the surface after a few seconds. Scientists needed to stay down longer to study life below surface. Gradually they succeeded. Cousteau, a Frenchman, was able to keep men down to a depth of 36 feet for one month and to a depth of 90 feet for a week. Now scientists are developing even better equipment. With this new equipment, men can stay below the surface for days or even weeks. In 1962 Cousteau set up a research station 35 feet below the surface. Then, in 1964, he set up another station on the ocean floor of the Red Sea. This was the first undersea station to operate without help from the surface. Many countries are now studying undersea living. The former Soviet Union has an undersea laboratory in the Crimean Sea. The United States has a

But I also want you to understand that realizing your dreams comes from hard work, some good luck and good timing. Here are some words of wisdom for you as you make your way in the world, from an entrepreneur (企业家) and from your mama. 1. Be open-minded to changing your path along the way In high school, I wanted to be a politician. I left my hometown and went off to college in Washington,DC. There, I discovered that I loved to support women. It taught me that I’m creative, a strong leader and great at marketing. As a result, I moved on to be the head of a national health-care nonprofit. Becoming a mother while in that job opened my mind to launching a breast pump bag (储奶袋) business. Now I run a highly successful company that I started up on my own. I'm not a politician! 2. Failure is critical to your success Failure can be heartbreaking. But I will tell you that every failure I’ve had along the way has absolutely made me better. Failing the big math exam in high school and going to summer school was embarrassing. I eventually passed, and I’ve never failed an exam again. I learned from that experience to ask for help. Now, I ask for help in business all the time. I’m proud to be a role model to you as a mom and an entrepreneur. I hope I inspire you to believe that you can be anything you want. It will be my pleasure to watch your lives unfold before my eyes. Love, Your mom 21. In the writer’s opinion, what does it take to realize one’s dream? A. Failure, hard work and good timing. B. 河北省石家庄实验中学2019-2020学年高一3月月考英语试题 Word版缺答案

石家庄实验中学高一英语月考试卷 命题人:高一英语组 阅读理解(每小题2.5分,共25分) A I had a great time this past summer visiting Stone Mountain Park with my twin grandsons. I had the opportunity to spend the day with them seeing the various sights and attractions. One thing that my grandsons had really wanted to do that particular day was to climb to the top of the mountain. Stone Mountain isn't a particularly tall mountain and fortunately has walking trails to the top, but for two 5-year-olds, along with Grandpa, it's a formidable task. Since my grandsons' enthusiasm was much greater than mine, I decided to start the slow walk up the mountain. The beginning part of the trail was slow and gradual. It seemed like we were taking forever to climb just a short distance, but I had to remind myself that it took 3 of their steps to equal1 of mine, so I found myself walking ahead of them, then having to stop and let them catch up, over and over again. I was tired and sweaty, just wanting to get to the top of the mountain so I could rest well before starting my way back. I learned early during our walk that this wasn't going to be the case. We had to stop and look at every large rock with someone’s name carved in it. We looked at unusual plant formations. We examined large trees and we explored small rock overhangs that reminded the kids of caves. My grandsons viewed the walk as an exciting adventure. Climbing the mountain was a trial to me but my grandsons were not focused at all on the trial of climbing the mountain; they were simply enjoying the journey of the walk. I know when I face a trial in life, I tend to always think of the problem. I want the trial to be over quickly and let life get back to normal. What can I learn during the course of trial? At some point, the trial will be over and we'll be joyous for sure. However, the real joy should not be that the trial’s over, but I am celebrating what I learned during the journey. 1. What does the underlined word "formidable" in Paragraph 1mean? A. Relaxing. B. Meaningful. C. Strange. D. Difficult. 2. What can we know from Paragraph 2? A. The writer kept challenging his grandsons to catch up with him.
