More than 600,000 tourists from the Chinese mainland visited Taiwan last year, fulfilling expectations despite the impact of H1N1 flu and the global economic downturn.

A total of 606,100 mainland tourists visited Taiwan in the past year, with each spending nearly $1,800 on the island, including accommodation and shopping, Shao Qiwei, chairman of the

Beijing-based Association for Tourism Exchange Across the Taiwan Straits, said on Friday."We see good cooperation between tourism industries across the Straits taking shape," Shao said.Since July 2008, when Taiwan first opened to mainland tourists, about 660,000

mainland tourists have visited the island and spent $ 1.13 billion there, benefiting local transportation as well as the retail, entertainment and health industries.

In four months starting August last year, mainland tourists spent S65.72 million through UnionPay payment cards, figures from mainland bankcard association China UnionPay showed.

"Years of isolation between the two sides has made Taiwan an attractive place for mainland tourists," said Zheng Lijuan, deputy (副的) general manager of CITS International MICE Co. Ltd.

But under the impact of H1N1 flu since May, the number of mainland tourists to Taiwan had also dropped sharply, leading to industry insiders(内部的人)casting doubt as to whether the goal of attracting 600,000 mainland tourists to Taiwan in 2009 could be achieved.Despite the unfavorable conditions, a string of relaxed rules last year have spurred (刺激)the interest of mainland tourists in visiting Taiwan.

In the past year, Taiwan has opened to mainland residents in 25 provinces, up from the initial 13 provinces.Relaxed rules have also allowed five tourists to form a group to visit Taiwan, instead of the initial requirement of at least 10 tourists.Mainland tourists can also stay in Taiwan for a maximum of 15 days, instead of the initial 10 days.

Combined with mainland business groups, more than 900,000 mainland travelers visited Taiwan in 2009, Christine Lai, director of the Taiwan Strait Tourism Association, told China Daily.

Without releasing the goal for this year, Lai expressed hopes that mainland tourists would head to Taiwan on second or even third visits.

Part IV Writing (45 marks)

Section A (10 marks)

Directions:Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

Many factors contribute to a deaf or hard-of-hearing person’s ability to communicate:degree of hearing loss, type of hearing loss, age, individual, environmental factors.

Every deaf and hard-of-hearing person is unique. Eye contact and facial expressions are very important in Deaf Culture. If you look at the deaf or hard-of-hearing person while talking, he will feel you’re interested in what he is saying. Also, he needs to be watching your face or body language in order to fully understand what you’re saying.

Don’t panic if at first you cannot communicate. Be a patient, positive, and relaxed person. Most deaf and hard-of-hearing people can easily understand if you write. Try to have patience, as it will in almost all cases take longer to have a conversation.

Make sure you have the deaf or hard-of-hearing person’s attention before communicating. Use facial expressions and gestures.

Speak normally. Slow down a little bit and separate your words. Exaggerated(夸张的)mouth movements will not impr ove the person’s ability to understand you.

Keep your mouth free from barriers, such as long beards, pens, pencils, cigarettes, hands, etc. Look directly at the deaf or hard-of-hearing person when communicating with him. Don’t turn away from him while you are in mid-sentence.

For most deaf and hard-of-hearing persons, it is much easier to communicate on a one-to-one level rather than in a group situation. Be aware of background noises, lighting, and visual obstacles that are barriers to understanding.

Do not shout. In most cases, shouting simply doesn’t work and makes you look foolish.

Establish eye contact and watch the person’s expressions. If the deaf or hard-of-hearing person shows signs of being confused, ask if he can understand.

Section B(10 marks)

Directions:Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.

As a young man, Al was a skilled artist, a potter. He had a wife and two fine sons.

One night, his elder son developed a severe stomachache. Thinking it was only some common intestinal(肠的)disorder, neither Al nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But the disease was actually acute appendicitis(急性阑尾炎), and the boy died suddenly that night. Knowing the death could have been prevented if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, Al’s emotional health declined under the enormous burden of his guilt. To make matters worse his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son.

The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than Al could handle, and he became an alcoholic. As the alcoholism progressed, Al began to lose everything he possessed—his home, his land, his art objects, everything. Eventually Al died alone in a San Francisco hotel room.

When I heard of Al’s death, I thought, “What a complete failure!”“What a totally waste d life. ”As time went by, I began to re-evaluate my earlier harsh judgment. You see, I knew Al’s now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, most loving men I have ever known. I watched Ernie with his children and saw the free flow of love between them. I knew that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere. I hadn’t heard Ernie talk much about his father.

One day I worked up my courage to ask him. “I’m really puzzled by something, ”I said. “I know your father was basically the only on e to raise you. What on earth did he do so that you became such a special person?” Ernie sat quietly and reflected for a few moments. Then he said, “From my earliest memories as a child until I left home at 18, Al came into my room every night, gave me a k iss and said, ‘I love you, son. ’”

Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge Al as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind, but he had been a kind loving father, and he left behind one of the finest, most giving man I have ever known.

81. Why was Al in guilt?(No more than 12 words)(2 marks)

82. Where did Al die?(No more than 5 words)(2 marks)

83. What made Al addicted to alcohol?(No more than 10 words)(3 marks)

84. What did Al’s son Ernie learn from his father?(No more than 11 words)(3 marks)
