I teach economics in a university three times a week. Last Monday, at the beginning of class, I asked my students how their weekend had been. One young man said that his weekend had not been so good. He had his wisdom teeth (智齿) removed. Then he went on to ask me why I always seemed to be so cheerful (愉快的).

His question reminded me of something I’d read somewhere before: Every morning when you get up, you have a choice about how you want to live that day. I said, “I choose to be cheerful.”

“Let me give you an example,” I continued. “Besides teaching here, I also teach at a college in Henderson, 17 miles down the freeway (高速公路) from where I live. One day a few weeks ago, I drove off the freeway and turned onto College Drive. I only had to drive another half a mile down the road to the college. But just then my car broke down. I tried to start it again, but the engine wouldn’t work. So I put my flashes on, took my books, and walked down the road to the college. When I got there, I made a call and asked for a tow truck to meet me at my car after class. My workmate there asked me what had happened. ‘This is my lucky day.’ I replied, smiling.”

“Your car breaks down and today is your lucky day? What do you mean?” My workmate was surprised and asked.

“My car could have broken down anywhere along the freeway. It didn’t,” I replied. “Instead, it broke down at the perfect place: off the freeway, not far from here. I’m still able to teach my class, and I’ve been able to ask for the tow truck to meet me after class! If my car was meant to break down today, it couldn’t have been arranged in a more convenient way.”

I ended my story. In spite of the early hour, no one in my class seemed to be asleep. Somehow, my story had touched them.

Recently, an unstaffed (没有配备员工的) retail (零售) shop named Taocafe was opened. If you want to shop in it, you should know some steps about how to buy and pay for the goods.

Firstly, customers need to open their Taobao app on mobile phones, and then scan the QR code (二维码) to enter the shop. After that, they don’t need to use the phones while shopping. Then, after ordering products, customers need to walk through a payment door and they can finish paying for goods in a few seconds. As they leave the shop, an in-store camera checks whether they are only taking out the goods they paid for.

Many people think that Taocafe will be opened all over the world one day, but the Alibaba chief executive Zhang Yong denied it. He said the purpose of opening this unstaffed retail shop is to serve (为……服务) those hoping to run a cafe by helping them build a smart cafe more easily, rather than Alibaba running such shops itself. Besides, Alibaba will offer different kinds of services to the shops, such as technological platforms, payment, accounts, etc.

Actually, Taocafe is not the first unstaffed retail shop. In 2016, Amazon’s first unstaffed store was opened in Seattle. But it is only a private store for Amazon’s employees. In 2017, a Chinese company opened several unstaffed convenience stores. This is the first typical Bingbox store without staffs in it in Shanghai. In addition, a company named Wheelys has also designed a self-driving supermarket that navigates (导航) to different places throughout the day.

These unstaffed retail shops all have their unique features, which proves that a new economy age is coming. However, some people worry that many people will lose their jobs if the retail shops do not need employees any more.

a. Order products.

b. Pay for the goods.

B. d-c-a-e-b

C. c-a-d-b-e

D. c-d-a-b-e

35. According to Zhang Yong, why does Alibaba open this unstaffed retail shop?

A. It wishes to open Taocafe all over the world.

B. It tries to lead a new economy age.

C. It hopes to make more money.

D. It serves to help people run a smart cafe more easily.

36. How many kinds of unstaffed retail shops are mentioned in the passage?

A. One.

B. Two.

C. Three.

D. Four.

37. What is the best title for the passage?

Why play games? Because they are fun, and a lot more besides. Following the rules, planning your next move, acting as a team member, these are all “game” ideas that you will have throughout your life.

Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Some games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, games teach children some of the basic rules. They will need to follow these rules in the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and teamwork.

Many children’s games have a practical side. Children around the world play games and games prepare them for the work they will do when they grow up. For example, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones. It can be very helpful to exercise their hands and eyes, which is needed in hunting.

Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring sportsmen from around the world together to take part in the friendly competition. The audience wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for a whole country, not just the sportsman who got it. For countries experiencing natural disasters or war, an Olympic win can mean so much.

Sports are also an event that brings people together. Football is one of the most exciting sports in the world. People on all continents (大陆) play it, some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Californian football player, has found a way to spread hope through football. He sets up an organization and provides poor children with not only footballs but also a hopeful future.

Next time, when you play your favourite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it, what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in your life.

38. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the reason why people play games?

A. Games teach children some basic rules in life.

B. Games are entertaining and fun.

C. Many children’s games have a practical side.

D. Games only encourage the sportsmen.

39. According to the passage, why is winning Olympic medals so encouraging?

A. It means a win for the whole country.

B. It shows how excellent the winners are.

C. It helps the country out of natural disasters.

D. It brings a lot of money.

40. The writer supports his viewpoints in Paragraph 5 by _________.

A. making a comparison

B. listing numbers

In order to increase students' interest in learning English, our school held a “Happy English Week” last week. There were three different activities for the students.

One of them was the English singing competition. Many students were so interested in it that they took an active part in the competition. They were really good at singing. How beautiful the songs sounded!

There was also an English speaking competition. Some students gave speeches in English for five minutes. They talked about different topics. It was a great chance for them to improve their spoken English.

My favourite activity was the English story-telling competition. Students shared many wonderful stories. They tried their best to tell their stories in a lively way.

I love reading English books very much and I hope there will be an English book fair next year.

Besides, watching English movies will also be a good idea.

I can't wait for the next “Happy English Week”.
