A: hey (your friend's name), the winter holiday is coming, what are you going to do?

B: I'm going to spend it with my family, it's going to be so much fun, I haven't see my cousins for like ever! How are you going to spend you holidays?

A: I'm going to LA to see my family there and then go to Disneyland and Hollywood Universal Studio, I can't wait!

B: oh my god! you're so lucky! I haven't been to LA for a long time!

A: I know! I haven't been there in a long time either, all my family members are going there together, it's going to be fun!

Unit2 Travel

A: I'm glad I brought my jacket on this trip.

B: Yes, I didn't know Washington, DC got so cold in winter.

A: What would you like to do today?

B: I really think we should take a tour of the White House.

A: I thought we could go to some of the museums. Don't you want to see the museums?

B: Of course. But today I feel like seeing the White House. We should see it first, because it's the most famous historical building here.

A: I don't agree. I think the Capitol building is the most famous. But okay. If you want to see the White House, we'll go see it. I'm just afraid it will be boring.

B: Boring? How can it be boring? It sounds very interesting to me.

A: But it's the White House. The president and his family live there. They won't let us see most of it. Probably we can only see a couple of rooms.

B: No, that's not true. The White House is very big. And there are a lot of historical exhibits there. A: But how long does the White House tour last?

B: I'm not sure. I think it lasts about one hour.

A: Alright. We should take a taxi over there right after breakfast.

Unit3 Education

Interviewer: Now we have Mr. Sharp with us here. He is president of the students' union . Mr. Sharp, what do you think of school exams?

Mr. Sharp: Well, I oppose the whole system of exams for the following reasons. First, They test only a little of what kids learn at school. What's more, they test the ability to remember information and repeat it, but not necessarily their ability to think intelligently about what they've been taught. Besides, many examiners mark papers in such a hurry they can't possibly compare them in order to give fair marks.

Interviewer: Yes, I see. There are surely some problems with the present system of exam. But so far they are still recognized as the best way of assessing a student's performance. Can students be assessed in other ways? Probably Mr. Kennedy, headmaster of Logan Experimental School, can give us a promising choice. Mr. Kennedy, can you tell us why you have no examinations at your school?

Mr. Kennedy: Yes, certainly. We don't have exams at our school. We base our yearly reports on a system of continuous assessment. Any students who consistently perform badly are asked to leave at the end of the year. In this way we can maintain a high academic standard without examinations, which, in my opinion, depend too much on memory and don't allow the children to develop their own personalities.

Interviewer: Thank you, Mr. Kennedy. Well, that wraps up our discussion on the pros and cons of school examination.

Unit 4 Transport

A：do you think we should travel by bus or by train?

B：it’s a difficult choice. The train is a litter faster, but much more expensive.

A：we could face delays if we travel by bus, thanks to traffic jams.

B：buses are more cramped and you can’t walk around.

A：that’s true, but I feel that I see more when I travel by bus.

B：really? I think you see more traveling by train.

A：so, which form of transport do you prefer to use?

B：I prefer going by train, ever though it costs more.

A：ok them. We’ll go by train. I’m sure we’ll have a good journey. Shall we go to the station and buy the tickets?

B：the train aren’t usually full. We can get them on the day we travel. We should buy return ticket because they are much cheaper than getting two singles.

A：we should take a packed lunch on the journey. The food they sell on the trains is always expensive.

B：ok，now let’ go.

Unit6 Environment

A; is the environment a big issues in your country? It is in mine.

B: it is in mine too. The biggest issue is water. The climate is dry and so water conservation is very important.

A: what methods do you use to conserve water?

B: water is rationed. We can only use a certain amount each month. It means that we cannot use some modern household items, like washing machines. They use too much water.

A: I see. I think the biggest environment problem in my country is air pollution.

B: yes, I agree. The air here is much more polluted than in my country. Of course, my country is more agricultural and has much less industry.

A: we have reduced emission of air pollutants in recent years, but cars are still a major source of them. Factories have become cleaner as stricter environment pollution law have been introduced.

B: the problem is now on a truly global scale. I don’t believe that any single country can do anything about it.

A: I think you’re right. There needs to be an international response to this problem.

Unit7 Sports

Steve: Hey, man. You'll never guess in a million years what I got.

Cao Wei: What have you got?

Steve: My cousin John has the flu, so he gave me his tickets to the last games in the subway series! Cao Wei: The subway series?

Steve: Have you been on Mars, man? It's the first World Series in 44 years played between two New York teams - the Mets and the Yankees. They're tied three games each, so tonight's game decides the winner.

Cao Wei: Oh, I did hear about that. You really got the tickets? Who's going with you?

B) In Britain, hospitality is not measured by how many dishes are provided as in China. It is shown by giving you freedom to choose whatever you really want. We never press you. We never put food on your plate but just ask you to help yourself. If you are shy or modest, waiting for the food

to be put on your plate, you will remain half-starved. What about in China？

A) In China, we usually say "no" when the host offers something, because sometimes an offer is not a real offer but a polite remark. After we say "no", we usually wait for the second or third offer before we accept it, but that never happens in a foreigner's home. And it's the host's responsibility to put food on your plate and to refill your cup.

Unit 12 Love

A: how's our handsome Jacky doing recently?

B: you know still bury himself into piles of papers. He is kind of working machine. But, he always fined time to go shopping with me. I love him.

A: oh! Baby. I know he is a good man. But, don't you think he is too old for you. I mean you have to stay with this guy for the rest of your life. You have to be careful. Marriage is not a game.

B: I don't care about the age. Like his inside quality. You know he is so kind and virtuous. But, thank you anyway.

A: but ......

B: .A let's stop arguing on this OK? I have made up my mind.

Unit 13 Entertainment

Amy: So, what are we going to do tonight?

Mike: Let's watch TV. There's a baseball game on.

Amy: No way! We are on vacation. I refuse to sit in a hotel room and watch baseball on TV. I want to go see a play!

Mike: Come on. I'm sure it's too late to get tickets now.

Amy: Nice try, but you don't know for sure without trying.
