倒数第二周星期五

A

A woman renewing her driver’s license at the County Clerk’s office was asked to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.

“What I mean is,” explained the recorder, “do you have a job, or are you just a …”

“Of course I have a job,” said Emily. “I’m a mother.”

“We don’t list ‘mother’as an occupation…‘housewife’cover s it,”said the recorder.

One day I found myself in the same situation. The clerk was obviously a career woman, confident and possessed of a high sounding title. “What is your occupation?”she asked.

The words simply popped out. “I’m a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations.”

The clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in midair.

I repeated the title slowly, then I stared with wonder as my statement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.

“Might I ask,” said the clerk with new interest, “Just what you do in this field?”

Coolly, with out any trace of panic in my voice, I heard myself reply, “I have a continuing program of research (what mother doesn’t), in the lab and in the field (normally I would have said indoors and out). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities (any mother care to disagree?), and I often work 14 hours a day (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most careers and rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money.”

There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk’s voice as she completed the form, stood up, and showed me out.

As I drove into our driveway, buoyedup (依托) by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants---ages 13, 7, and 3.

Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model (a 6 month old baby), in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal pattern.

I felt proud! I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable (不可缺少的) to mankind than “just another mother.”

Motherhood…What a glorious career! Especially when there’s a title on the door.

I try to be a good father. But compared with Dick Hoyt, I suck.

Ei ghty-five times he’s pushed his disabled son, Rick, 26.2 miles(1 mile = 1.6km) in marathons. Ei ght times he’s not only pushed him 26.2 miles in a wheelchair but also pulled him 2.4 miles in a dinghy(小游艇) while swimming and pedaled(蹬车) him 112miles---all in t he same day. And what has Rick done for his father? Not much---except save his life.

This love story began in Winchester, Mass., 43 years ago, when Rick was strangled (使窒息) by the umbilical cord(脐带) during birth, leaving him brain–damaged and unable to control his limbs.

When Rick was 11, the Hoyts took him to hospital and asked if there was anything that could be done to help the boy communicate. “No way,”Dick was told. “There’s nothing going in his brain.”

“Tell him a joke,”Dick suggested. They did. Rick laughed. It turned out that a lot was going on in his brain. Equipped with a computer that allowed him to control the cursor(光标) by touching a switch with the side of his head, Rick was finally able to communicate.

And after a high school classmate was paralyzed in an accident and school organized a charity run for him, Rick pecked out(啄出), “Dad, I want to do that.”

How was Dick, who had never run more than a mile at a time, going to push his son 5 miles? Still, he tried. That day changed Rick’s life. “Dad,”he typed, “When we were running, it felt like I wasn’t disabled any more!”

And that sentence changed Dick’s life. He became obsessed with giving Rick that feeling as often as he could. He got into such hard-belly shape that he and Rick were ready to try the 1979 Boston Marathon. In 1983 they ran another marathon so fast they made the qualifying tim e for Boston the following year.

Then somebody said: “ Hey, Dick, why not a triathlon(三项全能)?”

Now they’ve done 212 triathlons.

This year, at ages 65 and 43, Dick and Rick finished their 23th Boston Marathon,

in 5,083rd place out of more than 20,000 starters. Their best time? Two hours, 40 minutes in 1992-only 35 minutes off the world record.

And Dick got something else out of all this too. Two years ago he had a heart attack during the race. Doctors found that one of his arteries was 95 percent blocked. “If you hadn’t been in such great shape,” one doctor told him, “you probably would have died 15 years ago.”So, in a way, Dick and Rick saved each other’s lives.

People who play computer games to train their brains might as well be playing Super Mario, new research suggests.

In a six-week study, experts found people who played online games designed to improve their cognitive skills didn’t get any smarter.

Researchers recruited(招募) participants from views of the BBC’s science show Ban g Goes the Theory. More than 8,600 people aged 18 to 60 were asked to play online brain games designed by the researchers to improve their memory, reasoning and other skills, for at least 10 minutes a day, three times a week.

They were compared to more than 2,700 people who didn’t play any brain games, but spent a similar amount of time surfing the Internet. All participants were given an “IQ test” before and after the experiment.

Researchers said the people who did the brain training didn’t do any better on the test after six weeks than people who had simply been on the Internet.

“If you’re (playing these games) because they’re fun, that’s absolutely fine,”said Adrian Owen, assistant director at Britain’s Medical Research Council, the study’s lead author. “But if you’re expecting these games to improve your IQ, our data suggests this isn’t the case.”

Computer games that are supposed to improve memory, reasoning and other cognitive skills are played by millions of people worldwide, though few studies have

examined if the games work.

“There is precious little evidence to suggest the skills used in these games transfer to the real world,” said Art Kramer, a professor of psychology at the University of Illinois, US.

Instead of playing brain games, Kramer said people would be better off getting some exercise. He said physical activity can help produce new brain cells.

Other experts said brain games might be useful, but only if they weren’t fun.

“If you set the level for these games to a very high level where you don’t get the answers very often and it really annoys you, then it may be useful,” said Philip Adey, a professor of psychology at King’s College in London.

If people are enjoying the brain games, Adey said they probably aren’t being challenged and might as well be playing a regular video game.

He said people should consider learning a new language or sport if they really want to improve their brain power. “To stimulate the intellect, you need a real challenge,”Adey said, adding computer games were not an easy shortcut. “Getting smart is hard work.”

53. According to the article, which of the following is NO T useful to develop brain power?

A. learning a language

B. getting some physical exercise

C. playing challengable games

D. playing fun games

54. What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?

A. playing brain games is as ef fective a means of improving the brain as Super Mario.

B. playing Super Mario is a better means of improving the brain

C. playing brain games can’t improve cognitive skills

D. playing computer games can train the brain

55. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Many studies show that brain games are an effective means of improving cognitive skills.

B. The skills used in brain games can be transferred to real life.

C. Participants took IQ test twice during the research because scientists wished to assess if brain games were effective in improving cognitive skills.

D. Surfing the Internet is a more effective means of improving cognitive skills than video games.

56. Which is another way of summing up Adey’s argument in the last paragraph?

A. Practice makes perfect

B. Where there is a will, there is a way.

C. No pains, no gains.

D. A bad beginning makes a bad ending.

Some chimpanzees seem to react like humans in the face of a fellow chimp’s death, two new studies have found. Chimps appear to comfort the dying, experience sadness at death and have trouble letting go.

In one study, researchers at the University of Stirling and at Blair Drummond

Safari Park in Britain watched how three chimpanzees reacted as a fourth chimp, an elderly female named Pansy, sickened and died.

Park officials had separated Pansy from the other chimpanzees for treatment when she be came ill in November 2008. But when her breathing became irregular a few weeks later, the other three chimps were allowed to join her.

In the 10 minutes before she died, the three animals –an elderly female named Blossom, Blossom’s adult son Chippy and Pansy’s adult daughter Rosie –frequently groomed (梳理毛发) and touched Pansy. They stood in close, and Chippy shook her arm, apparently testing for signs of life. When they got no reaction, “they appeared to arrive at a decision that something had changed, and she was no longer the same as she was beforehand,” said lead researcher James Anderson, from the University of Stirling. “It seems they are clearly able to distinguish the difference between being alive and unresponsive .”

Soon, both Blossom and Chippy left Pansy’s side. Even though it was not her usual sleeping area, Rosie stayed and slept by her mother’s body almost the entire night.

Sixteen hours after Pansy’s death, zookeepers removed the body, with the three chimps watching quietly. For several days afterward, the group refused to make a nest at the area where Pansy had died.

In the second study, chimpanzee mothers were observed in the forests of Bossou, Guinea, after a disease had swept through a group of 19 chimpanzees, killing five, including two infants . The mothers of those infants continued to carry the corpses (尸体) around, even as the bodies dried out. One mother carried her baby for 19 days; the other mother carried hers for 68 days.

“We have two explanations here – one is that there is a very strong bond between chimpanzee mothers and chim panzee infants,” said lead researcher Dora Biro, a biologist at the University of Oxford.

“Another possibility is that they were aware of the death and this was just their way of dealing with it,” Biro added, pointing to human inability to let go of objects that remind us of people we have lost.

Craig Stanford, a US expert, called the studies’ findings interesting, but said that although humans and chimpanzees shared similar emotions to some degree, it would be dangerous to extrapolate (推断) too much about c himps’ understanding of death.

57. The studies have found that some chimpanzees ______.

A. feel deep affection for their mothers

B. are as clever as humans

C. are afraid of death like humans

D. seem to have emot ions similar to those of humans

58. According to the first study, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Pansy was separated from other chimpanzees until her death when she became seriously ill.

B. Chimpanzees seem to know the difference between life and death.

C. Blossom was the saddest if the three chimpanzees.

D. After Pansy died, the other three chimpanzees refused to sleep in their nest.

59. Al l of the following might explain why chimpanzee mothers carried the corpses of their babies around for a long time OTHER than ______.

A. the very strong relationship between chimpanzee mothers and their infants.

B. that the chimpanzees might know what death was.

C. that the bodies of the infants might bring back memory of their babies.

D. that they wanted to find a good place to bury them

60. From what Craig Stanford said we can infer that ______.

A. it’s doubtful whether chimpanzees really have a full understanding of death

B. humans and chimpanzees have the same emotions

C. it would be dangerous for chimpanzees to understand death

D. humans and chimpanzees belong to the same family

They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger. For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hor- mones (荷尔蒙).They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etC.In general the person feels excited and ready to act. Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.” Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. 高考英语阅读理解D专练5篇

阅读理解D专练5篇 Passage 1(2017江苏,D) Old Problem, New Approaches While clean energy is increasingly used in our daily life, global warming will continue for some decades after CO2 emissions(排放) peak. So even if emissions were to begin to decrease today, we would still face the challenge of adapting to climate change. Here I will stress some smarter and more creative examples of climate adaptation. When it comes to adaptation, it is important to understand that climate change is a process. We are therefore not talking about adapting to a new standard, but to a constantly shifting set of conditions. This is why, in part at least, the US National Climate Assessment says that:“There is no ‘one-size fits all’ adaptation.”Nevertheless, there are some actions that offer much and carry little risk or cost. Around the world, people are adapting in surprising ways, especially in some poor countries. Floods have become more damaging in Bangladesh in recent decades. Mohammed Rezwan saw opportunity where others saw only disaster. His not-for-profit organization runs 100 river boats that serve as floating libraries, schools, and health clinics, and are equipped with solar panels and other communicating facilities. Rezwan is creating floating connectivity(连接) to replace flooded roads and highways. But he is also working at a far more fundamental level:his staff show people how to make floating gardens and fish ponds to prevent starvation during the wet season. Elsewhere in Asia even more astonishing actions are being taken. Chewang Norphel lives in a mountainous region in India, where he is known as the Ice Man. The loss of glaciers(冰川) there due to global warming represents an enormous threat to agriculture. Without the glaciers, water will arrive in the rivers at times when it can damage crops. Norphel’s inspiration came from seeing the waste of water over winter, when it was not needed. He directed the wasted water into shallow basins where it froze, and was stored until the spring. His fields of ice supply perfectly timed irrigation(灌溉) water. Having created nine such ice reserves, Norphel calculates that he has stored about 200,000m3of water. Climate change is a continuing process, so Norphel’s ice reserves will not last forever. Warming will overtake them. But he is providing a few years during which the farmers will, perhaps, be able to find other means of adapting.

高考英语阅读理解专项训练及答案及解析

高考英语阅读理解专项训练及答案及解析 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is gaining global popularity. According to a government white paper, TCM has been introduced in 183 countries and regions around the world. Westerners' understanding of TCM, however, may be limited to acupuncture, cupping and massage(针灸,拔罐和按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on U. S. swimmer Michael Phelps, back from cupping for the purpose of relaxing his muscles and reducing pain became the center of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016. As a matter of fact, Chinese herbs play a more important role in getting rid of diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. It is therefore disheartening to know that while 103 World Health Organization member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine. TCM falls far behind Western medicine owing partly to the slow development of Chinese herbs. Herbs are made into pills, powder and soup, and the kind of herbs used, their quality and quantity, and the processing of the ingredients (原材料) jointly determine the effectiveness of the prescription. Compared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardization, with the chemical composition and functions of its medicines being unclear and their effects being unstable. Fortunately, standardization has improved in recent decades, with an increasing number of factories producing patented TCM drugs. Another factor that has prevented the development of TCM prescription drugs is the lack of creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicines according to prescriptions handed down from the past. Chinese chemist Tu Youyou's winning the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria (疟疾) treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China's TCM industry. However, the current state of affairs cannot be changed within a short time. (1)Why does the author mention the example of Michael Phelps? A. Because he was injured in his swimming. B. Because cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment. C. Because westerners know a little about TCM. D. Because westerners attach great importance to TCM. (2)Why don't some member countries of WHO recognize Chinese herbal medicine? A. Because Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases. B. Because they only approve the practice of acupuncture. C. Because Western medicine is more effective. D. Because medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly. (3)Compared with Western medicine, what is the weak point of TCM in Paragraph 4? A. The methods of planting herbs. B. The effectiveness of prescription. C. Lacking in standardization. D. Its stable functions.

高三英语阅读理解专练(七)

高三英语阅读理解专练(七) 制卷人:施浩杰2008/11/17 A His own way to express love Yesterday was our three-year anniversary. We didn’t do anything romantic: we just walked hand in hand and talked about our past and future. This was pretty much what I had expected. Andy is unromantic guy: no sweet words or roses. Smart as he is, he is a little bit shy expressing his love. In contrast, I am an outspoken girl who likes to show her feelings directly. So needless to say, I often feel that is insensitive. I envy other girls who are surrounded by sweet words. I was in this sullen mood until I heard a beautiful sentence one day: “If someone does not love you in the way you like, it does not mean that he does not love you.”this simple but sensible sentence made me think about our happy days and recall his deep concern for me. One cold winter night, I got a high fever. He hurried to my dorm and took me to the hospital. He was in such a hurry that he even forgot to wear socks. Upon arrival, he ran through the hospital handling all the formalities(手续). When I was put on a drip(输液), he told me interesting stories to make me happy. Being held in his warm arms and listening to his tender voice, I had never felt so safe and comfortable. Gradually, I felt asleep. When I woke up 15 minutes later, he was still whispering to me. He explained that if he had stopped talking I would have waken up. At that moment, I found love in his sparkling eyes. Another time, I had a bad quarrel with my best friend. Although I knew it was my fault, I refused to admit it. I was angry when he insisted I apologize to her. He said that it was difficult to admit a mistake, but this was what everyone should do. The next morning, I apologized to my friend and asked for her forgiveness. 高三英语阅读理解专项训练及答案含解析

高三英语阅读理解专项训练及答案含解析 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Average humans can consume 15 or more drinks in plastic bottles a month. If you were born after 1978, and live until 80 years old, you will leave behind a minimum of 14,400 plastic bottles on this planet. These bottles take hundreds of years to break down into tiny pieces of plastic, never to completely disappear. Most of the waste is consumed by fish and birds, which has shortened their lifetime greatly. The Plastic Bottle Village is just a great idea that might finally save us from being buried in plastic. It's a community in Panama that is going to be made of used bottles. The design process begins with building steel frames, which are then filled with these bottles. Once this step is complete, and electrical and plumbing (管道装置) lines are put inside, the plastic walls are covered by concrete—both inside and outside. So no one will actually be able to tell that the walls are made of plastic. Besides, the material will keep the house 17°C cooler than the outside, which is the biggest benefit to people living inside. The village is the brainchild (主意) of Robert Bezeau with the intention of setting up several environmental projects. Having started a recycling program four years ago, during which a number of plastic bottles were collected, he started to think of how they could be put to use. Soon enough, he decided to use them to build houses, and came up with a basic idea for the construction process. The project hopes to make people conscious of the waste that these bottles create so that they can do more to protect the environment. The village will also create an education center that will teach individuals from the world how to reuse plastic bottles as construction materials for shelter. Recycled bottles could neutralize the negative effect of your passage on this planet, and move closer to leaving only your “footprints”. (1)What does Paragraph 1 intend to tell us? A.
